Does anyone remember PETA? Yes? Good because they're doing another stupid thing.
They're trying to cancel the Iditarod.
I'm going to take a wild guess and say most of you don't know what that is.
The Iditarod is a Winter sled dog race in the state of Alaska which is run every year by Mushers with a team of husky-breed dogs across the state. It's an important part of our history here because it's to celebrate the sled dogs bringing medicine to the city of Nome from Nenana after a diphtheria outbreak in 1925. The lead sled dog was Balto and there's actually a statue in Central Park in NYC dedicated to him and Disney I think made a movie about this event (although many parts of it are inaccurate).
My sources are that I am Alaskan. I have watched this race since I was really young and we were taught this in school from Elementary to High School it's a really huge really important event for us.
But if you wanna read more here's an article about the history of it and the official website:
https://www.history.com/news/the-sled-dog-relay-that-inspired-the-iditarod https://iditarod.com/
I have more information about the race itself if that would be interesting to anyone but that's not what this is about.
PETA is trying to cancel it because they claim the dogs are being abused.
Which is absolutely BS btw.
The dogs are specifically bred for the cold climates as they are husky dogs. The race goes over multiple days so of course, they get rest stops. And they wear little boots to protect their feet on the ice. Any abuse/mistreatment of the dogs would result in immediate disqualification from the race.
The race is a very important part of our history here. PETA trying to cancel it is honestly just so stupid to me.
But I feel like it's important to share this here so people know about what's happening and so I can educate a few of you :)
