I’ve been telling people this for some time now. I was in art school (SCAD) for only 2 years, and then left because I saw how dire the financial situation was getting. Thanks to my scholarship and the generosity/privilege of my parents, I escaped with only $8,000 of student loan debt, plus a totally drained savings account (I had $5000 to my name going into art school; all of that was spent on materials, books, and some food; I was working a part time job, too). My parents will probably be paying back the debt that they took on my behalf for the rest of their lives.

During my time there, I took ONE class on which I have built my current career. The rest were more or less useless to me. And the class I took - mold making and casting, which cost about $6000 (including materials, pre scholarship discount)? I could have learned all of the same stuff from the internet, or from a Smooth-On seminar for a few hundred dollars.

Build your own education! Art college is not a necessity!

And adding to the resources listed in the article, if you are interested in makeup, sculpture, design, or anything relating to the SPFX industry, the Stan Winston School is the most valuable resource I could possibly share.

I am fortunate enough to have a lot of creative professional peers online, so I invite you: If you are a professional artist (meaning you earn your living off of your creative work), feel free to chime in. Did you go to an art-specific institution? What was the most useful parts? What did you not get from it that you wished you had? Was it worth the investment (of time and money)? I think other professional artists talking about this candidly can be more helpful than most guidance councilors and recruiters…

I am a professional artist, and make art full-time as a job since 2005. I did not go to art school. I didn’t go to any college. I had intended to. People were pressuring me to do so form every side. When I was a teenager, every adult I talked to about it pushed college constantly. I worked very hard in high school to make the best grades I could, and doubled up my classes one year (very stressful btw) to make room for extra classes my senior year. I was in the top 10% of my class. I was on the very privileged road to get into nearly any school I wanted to (provided I could afford it) and scored a rare perfect score on my AP art concentration, which I was told was very well looked upon by art colleges. Then life got in the way and by the time I was in a position to go to school, I was starting to realize that the idea that “only losers don’t attend college and you will end up jobless and homeless” that high schools, recruiters, and general social peer pressure push so hard …. might not be true. I saw some friends in debt with nothing really gained to show for it and I got to thinking about it more clearly. I think education is important and very useful, but I also have an open mind and realize that for some fields, there are ways other than college to educate yourself. College can teach discipline, too, and I am not talking about being scolded by professors. I am talking about personal discipline and work ethic as an artist. This too, though, can be achieved in other ways if you are genuinely dedicated. The link above goes into ways that you can better yourself and educate yourself as an artist for a fraction of the cost of an art school. If you are really broke (I hear you man) some of these ways are free.

Ironically, I think that the only reason I can afford to be a successful artist (even if my successes have been “barely squeaking by sometimes”) is because I didn’t attend an art college and get myself into crippling debt. I feel quite strongly that if I had attended art school for the type of art that I want to do (mostly painting and some illustration), that I couldn’t AFFORD to be a full time artist at my current age (30′s). Just food for thought.

I’m an 18 year old kid with a job preparing to go to a good art school and like… I’m excited to go, I took a summer “preview” program there and it was fantastic. I want to go because I felt at home there; if imma pick between that and some where my disadvantage (was “homeschooled” for many important years and didn’t learn a bunch of important stuff) puts me off really badly, I’d rather go somewhere I prefer that has a fantastic rate of students who go into art careers afterwards But on Tumblr I’ve seen nothing but discouragement towards attending art schools? And money has always been a big issue and anxiety of mine and my family’s? Family and friends say go ahead and art school, they’re behind me 100%, but I’m so anxious that I won’t have what it takes to art? I feel like going to art school would at least give me a credential that says I can art (and those tend to help with getting jobs) but I’m constantly seeing discouragement about that? I’m also not good enough at self learning to push myself and do training rather than drawing the same things the same way all the time and wouldn’t art school help with that? Idk, does anyone have anything to say, or advice? Because 100% of what I’ve been hearing online is not to do it but maybe that’s just specific to the circles I follow?

The short answer: It depends on what you want from school, your financial situation, and what SORT of art you want to do in your life. Do you want to do self employed freelance, or work for an animation studio? Those are very different answers. (note: I didn’t know the answer to this when I was 18 so if you aren’t sure, it’s okay to take some time to decide) So, now is a great time to think about this stuff. There are no right or wrong answers. What you are seeing online, and on Tumblr, are probably people frustrated (rightly so) with the astronomical costs associated with going to some schools, especially since not everyone can get scholarships and we all come from different financial backgrounds. One person’s crippling debt can be no big deal to the next person. That’s okay- but it’s important to remember we all have different situations. One of the main reasons I reblogged this was to get different opinions from working artists on what worked for them because I knew the answers would be varied, in hopes that it can help someone that is trying to decide if art college is right for them or not. I DIDN’T HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY…. when I was preparing for the college/no college decision I couldn’t talk to industry professionals, past students, or anyone other than guidance counselors or college recruiters. I didn’t have various opinions to read online.
