When he returns to the table, Jesse hasn’t moved.  He glances up as Walt approaches; eyebrows raised. “She okay?” Who? Dammit. Belatedly, he realizes that he should have had the phone out again – just in the act of snapping it shut, maybe.  Tucking it back into his pocket. No matter.  He waves the question away.  The total mass of nachos on the cardboard tray has been reduced by another third, since he left.  The upper layer of shredded cheese is well on its way to becoming as hard and congealed as the Swiss (or Provolone?) on his own sandwich, but it still feels like the more appetizing option of the two so he reaches out anyway.  Works a single tortilla chip free, with the kind of painstaking concentration he used to reserve for pipetting microliters of sample for the chromatograph into a 96-well plate back in his grad school days.  He chews.  Swallows. Can’t remember the last time he felt genuinely hungry. Then – “I need to know whose side you’re on,” he says, without further preamble. Jesse stares at him.  “Seriously?” “I trust you, Jesse,” he says.  “I’ve always trusted you.  We’ve always had each other’s back, haven’t we?  So I’m asking you, now – ” “If you have to fucking ask me that, you shouldn’t have bothered to come.”

nothing gets me like the trope of insane people in insane relationships actually having existed in each other's periphery for years before they truly find each other. when you think about it the concept of walt and jesse is lobotomy-inducing like. imagine sitting in a room with the most average forgettable chemestry professor who barely if at all registers as a human being not knowing than in approximately six years he will be murderously psychosexually obsessed with you
