i think its some combination of:

the act itself being an unpleasant sensory experience

absolutely no short term reward

long term reward of "not losing your teeth" too abstract

knowing that no matter how well you do it one day you will still always have to do it again the next

we are bad at remembering to do things by ourselves

Not sure how old everyone here is but as a 24 year old ADHDer I can say the copious amounts of Cavities and dentistry bill have made a marked improvement on my ability to remember to brush. Also I always thought of it as a good sensory experience. Something about knowing how clean my mouth is and not having to worry about the cavities getting worse.
