My friend Karinya has been living with a rare form of cancer called Paraganglioma. She bought tickets to see Florence and the Machine play in Austin months ago and has been so excited to go, but was not able to since she is bedridden in a hospice care facility. So Florence and Rob came to visit and played an hour long private concert for us in Karinya’s room! We can not thank them enough for giving her this gift.

Alternate title: In which z0e rants like all the other tumblrinas.

I know why Link can't be female and why its a stupid thing to wish for. Why are you going to take a 30 year old video game with established dynamics and try and insert agenda into it for the sake of agenda? Its pandering at that point, obvious pandering. Point and laugh kind of pandering. I don't want females in my game simply because people demanded it. I want a game company to make that choice on their own and to have that choice matter.

If I want to play a game with a female in it, I want that female to have her own story and her own set dynamics. I want people to like that game because it is a GOOD GAME, not because it has a girl in it. I don't want to see in bold letters "PROUD FEMALE PROTAGONIST" when I play so that I feel some kind of weird female joy that I am supposed to experience and now I am meant to like it because PROUD FEMALE PROTAGONIST and nothing else. I want to get engrossed in a good original story with unique mechanics. I want to spend 40 hours on a game thats genuinely well made. To the point that I don't even care what gender the protag is, the game is THAT GOOD.

These are the kinds of games we need if we want more female protagonists.

What we don't want is a game studio feeling obligated or even bullied into inserting FEMALE into their existing IP to make spoiled little "Gamur grrls" feels special about themselves. Thats paper thin. Thats weak. That isn't going to change anyones minds about equality. Its going to get them to say "Oh those silly gamer girls!" again. Original IP and protagonist, please. Not girlMario and GirlLink and BoyZelda because EQUALITY! LOOK! Look guys! We're Equal now! Yuck.

If you're sitting there focusing and focusing on "notfemalenotfemalenotfemale" while playing a game, then guess what? You're not playing the game anyways. So just stop. Or go make your own game. If you're not going to play Breath of the Wild because GirlLink isn't a thing, you're in this for the wrong reasons.

Speaking of STRONG FEMALE PROTAGONIST. Horizon Zero Dawn looks to be an example of "doing it RIGHT". That live gameplay footage was amazing. That gameplay is solid, those graphics are amazing. The fact that the protag is a female is just an added bonus. I am certainly going to be enjoying it in the future.

Sony won E3

Just from the way they handled their presentation it was clear they won, if there was anything to win. When you are showcasing videogames, show the games more than the creators! They opened with an amazing live playthrough of a new God of War with a full Orchestra behind it. Meanwhile Xbox was busy cutting between important gameplay footage and wide shots of their exensive E3 stage setup. Eesh.

Tell me how anything can beat that!?

The Last Guardian gave me FEELS.

Horizon Zero dawn. FEELS.

I even had feels towards the biker-vigilante zombie game.

But there are plenty of people who do want the Skyrim remaster. The improved graphics and the ability to play it on newer consoles. Plus people who haven't played it can check em out now.

This is true. And its good for the console-only people who may have wanted to try mods at one point or another. I myself am a Skyrim console-pleb. I dont know. I just really would have hoped for a new Elder Scrolls! Realistically, I know its not possible. (They just got done with FO4.) I think a Morrrowind or Oblivion remaster to be more of a good idea than a game that came out 5 years ago. I can think of a good chunk of people who would play Morrowind with remastered graphics. Many people look at those old polygons and don’t have the patience to mod it or to just deal with it.

Maybe in the future? Thatd be nice.

Bethesda was okay, btw. OKAY. Skyrim Remaster? Not necessary. Shiny graphics won’t make me play it again. And we all know the modding argument against it. Dishonored 2 looks NICE! I wouldn’t mind playing that. Makes me want to pick up the first one.
