Any Other World - Mika
Embedded in this recording Mika adds speach about the suffering of a woman. At 4:09 in this recording there is speech from the woman saying she will never forget her story. I found this new dimension of listening to a song very effective and something I wish to incorporate to some scale in my piece.

Day 10
Today I had a car journey with my Dad to get a pasty in Hayle. I recorded our conversation along the way and listened about his morning-a typical day as a farmer. His Cornish accent and style of talking is very thick having lived ‘down west’ all his life. Here are the interesting lines I captured from our conversation; I made it into a sort of story line.
We're going to get a pasty now, in Hayle.
Down that way, Penzance, Hayle? (indicator noise)...Yeah, right.
When I went to see the cows at like quarter/half past nine, cow calving, well I calved it.
It was very stressful, I had the get the cow out, calve it, and gotta get ready to go by ten o’clock, everything.
I was out every hour trying to calve a heifer.
Hillman Super Minx! Good job I had some sleep that night, I can tell you.
It’ll be alright.

Inspiration of the day
Looking up interesting places with good acoustics that people have recorded in the past. The first link looks like an empty construction sight although there is no write up explaining where this is. The second link is a performance of an Icelandic Hymn in a train station, the extended reverb allows for a luscious mushy sound.

Where? Garras Farm
Where exactly? Behind the Milking Parlour in the Grain Silo (storage container)
What did I find? Excellent acoustics inside the empty container when recording samples for the flute interlude in the piece.
When? 23/03/20
Nothing puts the finishing touch on a song quite like a bark, miaow, squeak or whinny...

Day 8
The BBC lists a number of songs that have intersting animal noices as its main feature, or simply in the background. For example through the use of rattle snake, bird song, lions roar and frog burps.
The first example in this link are ‘Unique collaborations between nightingales in an East Sussex wood, and improvisatory musicians. Saxophonist Rachel Musson matched the birds cheep for cheep, and violinist and singer Alice Zawadzki complimented their short chirps with longer, expressive notes.’

Where exactly? Garras Farm Heffer Cattle Shed
For what reason? To record the mooing of the cows and other farm animals.
What did I find? Plenty of cows, chickens and ducks with excellent singing voices.

‘Cave Cascade’ is part one of the tracks from Kelly’s albums called The Cave Sessions. The use of the acoustic is so well managed allowing each sound to be drawn out revealing all the deeper sounds within in a reverb on 33 seconds.
In this album Rob Kelly manipulates a wide variety of sounds produced on a variety of instruments from the waterphone to the drum kit in a cave from horror and drama based sounds to lighter more ethereal sounds too.

Day 7 (Part 3)
Where? Chapelporth Beach
Where exactly? In the quietest cave at Chapelporth Beach.
For what reason? To record the main body of my piece in a less interrupted but still resonant space
What did I find? I found that the cave wasn’t as resonant as all the over caves I had visited but there was no water feature in the back so the only surrounding sounds were the waves approximately 50m from this cave so this was the closest cave I could find to being perfect.

Footage taken of a cave I thought would work well for recording. I was thoroughly mistaken. Watch part 3 to hear more.

Where? Holywell Bay
Where exactly? In the caves surrounding the beach.
For what reason? To find a suitable recording location for the main body of my piece.
What did I find? Each of the caves I could access had a running water feature in the back. This echoed across the cave masking the recording samples I took so I will have to find another suitable beach which has quieter caves.

‘Arirang‘-is a traditional Korean folk song whic is often considered as the unofficial national anthem of Korea.
The composer of this beautiful piece is unknown and so is the performer in this redition which makes it all the more ethereal.

Where? Idless
Where exactly? Idless Woods
For what reason? To record the flute interlude section of the piece in a natural open setting. I chose this setting as it is where I spent lots of time in my childhood so has lots of significance to me and thought the creaking trees in the background would offer an interesting effect.
What did I find? The location was perfect as it was uninterrupted by traffic however due to it being such an open space the sound was lost very quickly so the recorder needed to be placed in the tree near I was playing.

Lights-a canadian singer songwriter specialising in electropop.
‘We Were Here’- is taken from the album Skin&Earth, Lights’s fourth album. Its significance to my project is that the entire track was recorded in a tunnel. For Lights it needed to be recorded in a tunnel due to it’s association with the her comic as her caracters pass through an earie tunnel. She used the tunnel in Vasquez Rocks National Park in California to portray this.

For what reason? After some great recording at under Calenick bridge I thought I would test the acoustics in theses tunnels...
What did I find? That the river was too loud and the acoustic too dead.
