Hot tip: if you’re not working your jars it ain’t magic, it’s just a cup of (probably molding) nonsense.
@ “spell jar” posts: unless you’re using it to conjure mold, it’s not gonna do anything if YOU don’t do anything.
For anyone understandably thinking “how would you know if you’ve never tried it”, well I actually gave tumblr magic a fair shot when I got here.
Tumblr magic is so completely different to anything in my path or studies that after a few double takes I thought, you know what? Let’s try it. Who the fuck am I to judge a praxis I haven’t even dabbled in?
The results? Honestly the same as if I try to manifest something into being by sheer force of will. Yes you can make this stuff work with some experience and power behind you but it’s nothing you couldn’t achieve by “wishing really hard”.
The spell jars? If you follow tumblr methodology what you’ll have there is some pot pourri with really good vibes. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’d make a lovely housewarming gift and if you’re powerful enough you could even manifest some shit…
Just know that the jar of whatever didn’t really help you do that, you did that all yourself. Imagine what you could do with some real, juicy magic.
This is why I always add a sigil and/or ask a deity to imbue my jar spell with energy. (I would give it more of my energy but I’m a spoonie, so you know, this just works better)
Sigils and imbuing energy (yours or anyone else’s) are pretty much exactly the opposite of what I’m talking about and are very much of the “passive” type spell jars I made this post about.
Bottle/jar spells should be shaken daily, or prayed/chanted over daily, or have candles burned over them at set hours or daily until they burn out, or buried somewhere significant, or thrown into running water, or a whole host of other things depending on your goals. If it’s sitting on your desk collecting dust you’re not working it, no matter how many gods you asked to whisper forbidden names into it.
Hot tip: if you dont feed your sour dough like everyday or close to everyday and if you dont ever use some to make dough and bake it you arent really making homemade sourdough bread.
Response: this is ovendooring! You are opressing me by telling me this. My molding jar of flour and dead yeast is bread even if I dont eat it, it works because I say it makes me feel ok when I see it. Step off.
This is why I write sourdough bread on the jar in pig latin, that makes it not need to be fed, kneeded, baked or anything–it makes me feel ok so it worked.
Listen you don’t gotta do anything on the full moon just because it’s a full moon like you can do that spell literally whenever the fuck you want, it’s just gonna take more energy on your part whereas during lunar phases you don’t have to work as hard.
You can charge the water yourself. You can cleanse your crystals yourself. You can do the love spell yourself. It’ll just take more. But don’t force yourself to do shit you don’t want to do just because it’s the full moon, you need to feel like it’s the right time, you can’t force it.
You don’t need the moon, stop doubting your own abilities and thinking you have to rely on outside forces.

The Most Important Magical Care Tool In A Witches Arsenal: Grounding
As a witch who’s always on the go it can sometimes be hard to focus on magical self care. I’m traveling and moving and working with lots of people and life is kind of a whirlwind and I love it but sometimes it all gets to be a little… much. In all of the hustle and bustle my ability to take care of myself and my ability to take care of my magical practice can start to go south. I forget to practice good magical hygiene (such as cleansing and banishing) and I start to feel a little disconnected from the whole thing.
When this happens I like to turn to magical self care! Now, there are two types of magical self care: there’s magic that is used as self care and there’s self care for your magic. The methods I’m about to discuss happen to be useful for both!
The Most Important Magical Self Care Tool In A Witches Arsenal: Grounding
Grounding is a vital part of learning to practice magic in a safe and healthy way. The term comes from the process of grounding an electrical circuit. Essentially if an object is negatively charged, grounding allows excess electrons to flow from the object into the earth, and if an object is positively charged, electrons flow from the earth into the object. It’s a method of balancing and equalizing the flow of energy.
Similarly, in witchcraft grounding is the practice of balancing personal energies. Many things can pull us out of balance, emotional turmoil (for empaths it doesn’t even have to be our own emotional turmoil, often we pick up other people’s emotions far too readily!), illness, performing rituals or spells, astral travel, even simple things from our day to day lives can create a state of too much personal energy or too little personal energy.
This can be an incredibly uncomfortable experience.
Symptoms of unbalanced energy:
Dizziness, feeling spaced out, light headed or a floaty feeling
Headaches
Forgetfulness
Misplacing or losing things
Feeling generally unwell or exhausted
Daydreaming and an inability to focus
Sensitivity to light and noise
Feeling over stimulated and nervy
Bumping into things or other general feelings of clumsiness
An uncomfortable sensation of buzzing under the skin
Nausea and vomiting
Pain
Irritability
Insomnia
These symptoms typically become more severe the further out of alignment you are.
It is essential that you learn to ground properly before beginning to practice magic. Often I see newer witches who have yet to learn this skill experiencing unnecessarily strong backlash from their spell work.
Magic is energy! When you move and manipulate energy in such powerful ways it can and will pull your own energy out of balance. Grounding allows you to avoid the unpleasant side effects of spell casting which means a you’ll be a happier witch and have more time and space to practice your craft!
How To Ground Yourself
There are many ways of grounding yourself, I suggest you try a variety of methods and find the one that is most effective for you.
Rooting Yourself
This method works best if you are barefoot and standing on grass or dirt. Imagine your energy extending down through your legs and sinking into the earth, becoming roots and burrowing into the soil to trade energy with the earth. Feel the earth’s energy flow up into your body, filling you all the way to your head and then back down and out through your roots. This energy will cycle through you and clear away any excess energy as well as solving any energy deficiencies you might have. Continue this until you feel calm and comfortable.
Laugh
Laughter is an amazing way to release pent up energy as well as building our personal energy from within! Give yourself time and space to have a good laugh, put on your favorite comedian and enjoy yourself.
Food
Nourishing your body can help to reconnect you to your physical self and refuel depleted energy. Sit down for a hearty meal and give it your full attention, this helps to pull you back into your body fully after astral work or other intense spiritual experiences and gives you a moment to rest and relax.
Water
Water is a wonderful conductor of energy, sitting with your feet in a stream, your hands under a running faucet, or drawing yourself a bath can equalize your energy very quickly. Playing in the rain can also equalize your energy but if it’s sunny out visualizing rain washing your energy clean will work just as well.
Go for a walk
Getting out in nature, especially if you can walk barefoot, will allow your body to trade energy with the earth and equalize your energy levels. Walking in nature also helps to build mindfulness and create a sense of ease in your life!
Wind Visualization
Sit comfortably and begin to visualize your energy body. When you have a solid image of it in your mind imagine a strong gust of wind blowing your energy around you, removing blockages, carrying away excesses and refueling any energetic deficiencies.
Exercise
Gentle exercise can help to release any excess energies. Do not ground this way if you feel lethargic, exhausted or in any kind of pain. This method is ONLY to be used when you have an energy excess!
Body Awareness
Simply giving your body attention can encourage your energy to equalize on its own. Take a few minutes to consciously take stock of every inch of your body. Begin at your head, feel your scalp, then move to focusing on each part of your face. Move downward and feel your neck, your chest, then your arms, your elbows, your wrists, your fingertips. Focus on your torso again, now placing your energy on your stomach, feel it move with your breath. Continue this all the way down to your toes. Try to remain relaxed throughout this process.
Let Yourself Cry
Crying or screaming will release excess emotional energy very quickly. If you’re the sort of person who loves a good cleansing cry then this one is for you.
Stones and Crystals
Certain stones and crystals can be grounding. Hematite is particularly good for this purpose.
Play in the dirt
Getting in contact with the earth through gardening or rolling around in the dirt like you did when you were a kid allows your body to exchange energy with the earth. So let go of your adulthood for a few minutes and get in the dirt!
When To Use Grounding
Grounding is a wonderful tool to use but it isn’t a cure all. It’s also not always desirable to be completely grounded! There are certain types of magic that can be hindered by grounding and other types of magic that are simply not energy based and won’t require grounding to be effective.
When working with spirits being too grounded can make it more difficult to connect to the entity
If you’re fueling magic with emotions or excitement grounding beforehand will not help. You want your emotions and energy high in order to perform that sort of magic.
Sigils generally do not require grounding
Any kind of astral or out of body practice will be made much more difficult if you’re grounded beforehand. Ground after this sort of practice, not before
Dream work will be hindered by grounding
Grounding is most often used for post-spell backlash but it can also be utilized in your day to day life to enhance focus and happiness, lessen anxiety and protect you from emotional runoff.
If you struggle with any of the symptoms of being ungrounded regularly you might benefit from adding a few minutes of grounding into your daily practice!

“What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell, and this year we became the story. But it’s not just a story affecting the entertainment industry. It’s one that transcends any culture, geography, race, religion, politics, or workplace. So I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue. They’re the women whose names we’ll never know. They are domestic workers and farm workers. They are working in factories and they work in restaurants and they’re in academia, engineering, medicine, and science. They’re part of the world of tech and politics and business. They’re our athletes in the Olympics and they’re our soldiers in the military.” - Oprah Winfrey, the first black woman to accept the Cecil B. de Mille award at the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards

I can’t use Chakras?
Can someone enlighten me on what I’m supposed to use if chakras are cultural appropriation? And how do I change my entire practice that’s been built around them? If you say that we shouldn’t use chakras that’s fine but I need you to give me some other logical options because every blog/book/shop that I’ve come into contact with thus far uses/promotes the chakras in western meditation, crystal healing, and ritual work and it’s what I and everyone I know has always used. I never would have guessed that it was only allowed to some people.
SO I read through some of the replies which correctly explain to you why using Chakras is a problem. But they obviously do not provide you with any assistance with how to break down or otherwise give you something else to work with in terms of terminology.
So let’s start by saying this. It’s part of practice building. For me, it’s clear to see that you’ve at least built a practice around something that you have associated with the term “Chakra” and whether or not it’s an exact equivalent (because like I said it’s specific to a section of religions as other replies have explained to you). You have been potentially working with something.
So start breaking it down from there. Go to the base of the situation. Why was it important for you to have whatever it is you’re working with in ritual? What did it feel like to you? How did you work with them? What feelings or emotions or thoughts do you have on the topic itself? Maybe start with a long descriptive name such as “Centers of X” or something like that where it’s an explanation of the duties or functions or feelings or emotions of what you’re working with.
You can take what you’ve been working with and abstract it away from whatever cultural appropriative or religious appropritive (depending) terminology or thought process that you had originally. You can start by breaking it down into what you’ve actually been doing and discover exactly your own thing there. Your own terminology, your own understanding.
A lot of what got dropped in occultism from the past was originated out of a racist amature anthropologists in the occult community who wanted to exoticify their practices and make them look a certain way without actually having to deal with the other aspects of that practice. It doesn’t mean that, that has to continue with you. And it also doesn’t dismiss the real activities that you have produced for yourself either.
It just may be something that is unique to you in which you have discovered for yourself. There’s where you change the concept. Flip it out.
Because sometimes you’ll find when you look into those religions, right? Or those cultural practices? Right? That they aren’t the same. That the practice you’ve been doing and what the actual practices are, aren’t actually the same at all. Because like I said, amature anthropologists in the occult community would short hand or otherwise generalize exactly what those topics are. And in some cases, “westernize it” to make it easier for Western audiences to tolerate or “understand.” You see that across the board.
Don’t be scared to lose a term. Be excited that you’ve discovered something else for yourself and have built up a practice into your own field by your own hands. You may have just been calling it something else, or have been trapped in a specific box that you now can explore out more than what you have been templated into.
Make sense?
This is such a great exploration of practice building. There’s so much value is breaking something down to its component parts and seeing how it works in one system and seeing how it can work in your own system.

Happy Feast Day Our Lady, Star of the Sea (Stella Maris)
Feast day: September 27 Patroness of the Catholic missions to seafarers Our Lady, Star of the Sea is an ancient title for the Virgin Mary. The words Star of the Sea are a translation of the Latin title Stella Maris. The title was used to emphasize Mary’s role as a sign of hope and as a guiding star for Christians, especially Gentiles, whom the Old Testament Israelites metaphorically referred to as the sea, meaning anyone beyond the “coasts”, or, that is to say, sociopolitical, and religious (Mosaic law), borders of Israelite territory. Under this title, the Virgin Mary is believed to intercede as a guide and protector of those who travel or seek their livelihoods on the sea.
