Found Here, Barack Obama's team daily blogs on his activities. It is possible to email him as it shows the "email" button at the top of the page. Also on Obama's Twitter account (found here), you are updated with what he's doing. So yeah, you can send him a message about the importance of freedom on the internet.

The last entry in Barak Obama's daily blog is from September 20th (Not so daily now is it) which specifies that President Obama was meeting with World Leaders at the U.N General Assembly. His twitter advertised his speech he will be making (was made 14 hours ago at time of this post) and had a link for streaming.

What are the Australian Government's plans to censor the internet (the so-called "Clean Feed")?

The Australian Government plans to block numerous "blacklisted" websites. The blacklist, featuring material such as child sex abuse, sexual violence and instructions on crime, would be compiled using a public complaints mechanism (found here). It is said to be done with 100% accuracy and won't impact the speed of the internet. Many groups have become outraged at this implementation and feel it is completely useless and impractical (such as them)

What place does censorship have in a democracy?

In a democracy you are given the freedom to information and knowledge so it seems that censorship would impinge on that freedom. The internet has become a dominant model of mass communication.

Tutorial 9: Task 1

Essay Plan

I've finally decided upon Question 3 for my essay. What is communication? Do whales communicate? Do birds? Do atoms? Does DNA communicate? What would you suggest as the limits to communication? When does a failure of human communication occur?

Humans fail to communicate when they develop an attitude of superiority and ignorance.

I feel I may have to get a little bit political with this question. Firstly I'll cover the direct definition of communication, the history of it and all that jazz. I would follow this by answering the questions listed, the interaction of whales, birds, atoms and DNA. I will finish my argument with the ways that human beings have impacted history through their failed communication.

Tutorial 8: Task 1

Creative Commons (CC) was developed to achieve what an outdated copyright law can't do. CC is a set of licenses that lists permitted use for creative works. CC requires "attribution". It leaves the consumer able to duplicate without making any profit, permitting the non-commercial sharing of your work. Strict Copyright only applies to a special class of works created with the intention of commercial exploitation. As our social lives have shifted into cyberspace, the copyright scope has expanded. What we say and write is not written down, therefore nobody owns them so it isn't a copyright violation. But if one was to copy and paste your material from one blog to another, it would violate your exclusive rights. “Free software” is a matter of liberty, not price.

Using Free Software is asserting the ethical and political right to learn. It is "free" because the user is free. Proprietary software is that which limits our freedom of usage. Corporations restrict the use of copying and sharing, and because of this control, our free society is endangered. Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. The "open" source has been associated with ideas and arguments based only on practical values (Found Here). The difference can be made that Free Software should be thought of as free speech, and open software is free use of their technology, knowing there is unlimited changes to be made by the consumer.

Tutorial 8: Task 2

As seen in Tutorial 7: Task 2, I have uploaded a "draft" version of what I hope my final video to be a part of. I own part of my production, as the music I have used in my video is owned by +44 and I have not claimed to own it. I am going to find another track to use in the background because the song in my draft isn't fitting but was available when I needed it. In my final draft, I will write a little song for me to play in the background so I don't break any copyright laws. I have created completely original material for my video so I will be free from all restrictions.

Tutorial 7: Task 1

Discuss issues that came up in the lecture: *How is Wikipedia useful? *Has anyone here edited Wikipedia? How hard is it? * Why does Facebook work? * What would it take for you to close down your Facebook account? * Where is the profit to be made in produsage? * Is citizen journalism the end of traditional journalism? Or any other topics that emerge from the lecture and readings.

Wikipedia is a handy source to gain an understanding of a topic. Many confess to doing so but it is widely know never to reference the website. This is mostly because the consumer is the produser, leaving the encyclopedia to our own devices. Wikipedia is subject to open review.

Shutting down a Facebook account is almost entirely impossible. Most people know that Facebook can deactivate and reactivate your account until the cows come home but to really take it all the way you need to wipe all information from your profile, request to deactivate your account, open a new account with another email, change email to your old account's email and confirm the email you will be sent and viola, old account is no more.

It was made clear in the lecture that there has always been a large gap between producers and consumers, primarily because of technology. With the development of the internet, it allowed greater distribution and a significant ease in consumption. The intent of produsage is a continual re-purposing of content with an aim to add value to the original. With the development of technology, VHS has transformed into DVD which has transformed into Blu-Ray. All of these modes paved the road to profit for produsers. With the re-purposing of products (as they are never considered "finished"), older movies become edited and modified to suit the consumer at the time which allows an ongoing profit for the produser.

Tutorial 6: Task 2

1) how you can add elements that you have created (photos, music, video from your phone etc) into the production, 2) problems you may have with copyright over elements that you did not create and 3) the dangers of defamation (saying or implying something that harms another's reputation).

1. To add original content into your production you must first assign what your narrative will be and decide how this will affect the outcome of your production. For photos, you can transfer them via a USB cable given with your device when you purchased it. Some devices now have Bluetooth capabilities and this could be a much easier way to transfer images, video or music across.

2. By using elements you have not created, you risk infringing rights and facing fines. Youtube specifies that if you use the music of a record label without claiming it isn't your own, you will be forced to remove the video and in some cases, suspension of your account (Found here).

3. Those who commit defamation of character are commonly known as "slanderers". Defamation happens through a written statement or claim about another or a company so this could be either a photo comment or a passing judgment. Slander is most commonly found in the comments of Youtube videos, online shopping photos and in Facebook comments. Defamation of character is taught not to be taken lightly and in some cases results in a legal battle (found here).

Tutorial 6: Task 1

Discuss issues arising out of the lecture particularly why Hollywood is having so much trouble adapting to the rise of the internet. For it 116 year history, cinema has depended on technological change for its existence and then for the new developments (colour, sound, TV, recorders, 3D, VHS, DVD, CGI) that have kept the format fresh and interesting to audiences who can quickly become jaded. What makes the internet different? Is downloading killing Hollywood or could it be the path to new beginnings?

In the earliest days of cinema silent movies evolved into 'talkies'. Subsequently cinema was undermined by TV, then VHS. Then DVD undermined VHS. Now the Internet undermines them all. Every time the industry viewed new technology as a threat, that very threat ended up increasing sales. By 2006 (in its first full year of service), over 100 million videos were viewed daily on YouTube.com, many of them short clips from copyrighted movies despite their being officially banned by YouTube’s terms of service. More and more, consumers were been viewing video content from online sources, such as YouTube, and relative newcomers Hulu.We, consumers, have not evolved beyond our desire for entertainment - just how we choose to access it.

George Lucas has long predicted the inevitability of online distribution and we can now see the launch of all sorts of new download services, which will make audio-visual content accessible more conveniently and more cheaply than ever before. In some places, we will actually watch it for free. The web however to date appears to offer, few, if any benefits to the art and craft of film making. The web has been flaunted as an extraordinary new tool allowing filmmakers new opportunity to express their visions and find audience. In order for cinematic success, the film industry must embrace the internet.

Tutorial 5: Task 1

How does Rubber utilise the elements of screenplay structure in its first act?

In the lecture this morning, we discussed film language. Narratives in films are mostly human centered with a protagonist and antagonist which drive the story. Characters are driven by desire/ fears and needs. Generally a film will exhibit opposition and conflict, shortly followed by a resolution and this is made evident in the Screenplay Structure which has been established by Syd Field.

Today we viewed the first act of Rubber. This film opens with a sheriff talking directly to the audience, breaking the forth wall and informing us that this film was made as a homage to "no reason" (evident in films and reality). The movie is set in a Californian desert and is established with an extreme long shot. The lead character in this film is a rubber tire which comes alive in the first few minutes. The tyre soon realises a kind of childhood glee in which it crushes all things within its path. The first point plot comes when rubber learns of its ability to psycho-kinetic ability to explode objects. Rubber is viewed from a low angle shot to show the authority and power which it's slowly gaining.

Tutorial 4: Task 2

Tumblr: Terms of Service

One of the biggest complaints received in the past two days was the deactivation of a Tumblr page which made fun of the creator, David Karp and his relation to some services not functioning correctly. Many Tumblr users were frustrated with the disabling but as it clearly states at the beginning of the Terms of Service, Tumblr reserves the right to disable any accounts. This seems to be dejavu from 2009 when Karp disabled 4 accounts which mocked posts by one of David's friends, Julia. Users felt vulnerable because they were uncertain whether they could be deactivated but it was specified that as long as they followed the terms they agreed to when they signed up.

Tumblr offers the warning of the NSFW (not safe for work) icon which can block underage users from certain Tumblr's. People under the ages of 13 are not permitted to post any private information which abides by the United States of America's law. Tumblr is a blogging service which allows the blogging and reblogging of audio, pictures, videos and written posts. Bloggers do have the opportunity to post without being censored as "block" was introduced which stopped users from viewing and reblogging content.

Tutorial 4: Task 1

What sort of computer games do you find most engaging? Why? What does it say about you? Why does computer game violence, mostly, not affect the players? Is there a level at which it does effect changes in people?

I am usually engaged in computer games which I can alter the outcome of the game, such as The Sims, Sim City or Age of Empires. I was brought up with these games mostly because my older brothers played these games amongst others, and they were just there to be played. I find these sorts adventure games more personal in the way that there is no specific goal or final level, it lasts as long as your skills/patience. I think these kinds of games keep you more alert and lively when you're playing simply because if you have played the game through once before, you aren't in a "robot mode".

Some games have been regarded with concern as they have been associated with depression, addiction, and even aggression (Shin, 2003). Depending on which side you choose to look upon, violence in video games can be seen as the biggest corruption of today's youth or variant of entertainment. I personally believe that violence in video games isn't a factor into acting in violent ways in reality. Some studies show that there is some association between the playing of violent video games and aggressive and delinquent behavior, but this by no means is any correlation (Radford, 2005). A violent minority of people will naturally be more attracted to violent video games but this shouldn't assume the majority of players are violent.

Is Myspace Old?

Beginning as some friendly competition for Friendster, Myspace emerged in 2004 as what would later be used by millions of people as a social network.The original aim was to create multiple versions of the site to launch a worldwide network. It was decided early on the the site would be free for all users, this ultimately led to the incredible rise in traffic on Myspace.

The first users of Myspace were employees of eUniverse (founders of Myspace) and later the site was used as a platform for bands to be discovered. After gaining much popularity in the UK, now famous bands such as Lily Allen, Kate Nash, The Artic Monkeys were discovered via the site. Talent emerging via Myspace became a very common story for a multitude of countries.

Just as Myspace rose to success in such a short amount of time, it's demise was almost as fast. Although it is still used by many, the audience seemed to have shifted from teenagers, young adults and musicians to spam and single middle aged Americans trying to find a partner. As we shift into a Facebook world, sites such as Myspace are proven to have passed their prime. Myspace is almost 8 years old, it did have a good run but sometimes it's better to just quit while your ahead.

WiseGEEK has come out with a report stating that some cell phones have the same radiation levels emitted as some microwaves. The popularity with Bluetooth technology has caused grave concerns with neurologists as long term effects aren't evident as it is only a recent development. Our generation is growing up with technology which ultimately, we are the guniea pigs for.

Tutorial 2: Part 2

My experiences with new communication technologies

Possibly the most abused weapon of communication is my mobile phone. I have it on 24/7 (unless it dies, sadface) and without it, I would probably be a hermit on facebook all day.

I began using my first mobile in Christmas of 2005. After a surge in mobiles within my peers, I naturally felt like I was left behind by the technology train which all of my friends seemed to have boarded. Mobiles were used by my parents and older siblings as I was growing up so it wasn't all that alien to me.

I never felt that privacy was an issue because I never really had that much to hide. Being at the wee age of 19, and only beginning to be a corrupt teenager at the age of 17, I am yet to fully immerse myself in the lake of shame most teenagers feel on a Saturday morning. When I create an account, I never put up information I wouldn't give to a random survey. That is my rule so far and when I google my name, proves a good system.

As an avid Tumblr user, I know many people simply from the internet and have never met in real life. I think that with our technologically driven generation, friendships will become more and more common without actual face time. I don't feel that I have an online facade, so my interaction online is very much similar to myself in reality (except I'm probably better spoken online because the backspace key exists).
