Allegro Therapy â beautiful short film by Italian filmmaker Patrizia Santangeli about Italyâs Orchestra Allegro Moderato,  a symphony orchestra composed of musicians with serious mental disability and a fine addition to these heartening developments in orchestra innovation.Â
Suffering can occur when physicians do not validate the patientâs pain. In the absence of disease, physicians may suggest that the pain is âpsychologicalâ (in the sense of not being real) or that the patient is âfaking.â Similarly, patients with chronic pain may believe after a time that they can no longer talk to others about their distress. In the former case, the person is caused to distrust [their] perceptions of reality, and that in both instances social isolation adds to the personâs suffering.

It seems like every week someone tells us how the internet and the digital age are overloading our brains. Sure, sometimes it feels like weâre being fed more information than we can handle, and that weâre paying attention to the wrong things. Are we giving our brain a fair shot? I mean, itâs a pretty powerful device.
I explore some science that show how paying attention can definitely blind us to the world, but also some science about how paying attention can be a very helpful thing.

App of the Day: Figure 1, A Photo Sharing App for Medical Professionals
Movable Science has launched Figure 1, a crowdscourced image library for healthcare professionals. Users can upload photos of medical conditions, x-rays and surgical procedures to help the community gain a greater understanding of how diseases manifest in actual patients. The photos are also shared with patientsâ privacy in mind. Faces are automatically identified to be blurred out and additional editing tools are available to safeguard privacy. The app is available for free in iTunes with an Android version on the way.

This is something the world needed. I know so many times I wish Iâd said something and even when I have, people donât help, people just scoff and say youâre over-reactingâŠ
I remember riding the bus home from work one time and some old guy about 70ish sat down beside me and he kept pressing me against the wall and rubbing against me and then he started stroking my leg and I kept pushing him away and asking him to stop and elbowing him and he tried to reach in between my legs and I looked around and the guys sitting around us to help and they just ignored meâŠ.just looked away and left me like that and he kept trying and finally I elbowed him so hard in the ribsâŠIâm sure I bruised his ribs and he just grabbed my leg and squeezed so hard it left bruises and fingernail marks on my thigh and said you lil fucking cunt and I shoved him and elbowed him until he got up and I stood waiting for my stop which I ended up passing because I was too terrified to get off the bus when he was still on it in case he followed meâŠ..one of the worst thing was I talked to friends afterward and most said oh what did you do to provoke that or youâre overreacting etc etcâŠ.only my friend Mikey cared and was so angry that no one helped me :s Â

Scientists create phantom sensations in non-amputees
The sensation of having a physical body is not as self-evident as one might think. Almost everyone who has had an arm or leg amputated experiences a phantom limb: a vivid sensation that the missing limb is still present. A new study by neuroscientists at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden shows that it is possible to evoke the illusion of having a phantom hand in non-amputated individuals.
In an article in the scientific periodical Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, the researchers describe a perceptual illusion in which healthy volunteers experience having an invisible hand. The experiment involves the participant sitting at a table with their right arm hidden from their view behind a screen. To evoke the illusion, the scientist touches the right hand of the participant with a small paintbrush while imitating the exact movements with another paintbrush in mid-air within full view of the participant.
âWe discovered that most participants, within less than a minute, transfer the sensation of touch to the region of empty space where they see the paintbrush move, and experience an invisible hand in that positionâ, says Arvid Guterstam, lead author of the study. âPrevious research has shown that non-bodily objects, such as a block of wood, cannot be experienced as ones own hand, so we were extremely surprised to find that the brain can accept an invisible hand as part of the body.â
The study comprises eleven experiments that explore in detail the illusory experience and include 234 volunteers. To demonstrate that the illusion actually worked, the researchers would make a stabbing motion with a knife towards the empty space âoccupiedâ by the invisible hand and measure the participantâs sweat response to the perceived threat. They found that the participants stress responses were elevated while experiencing the illusion but absent when the illusion was broken.
In another experiment, the volunteers were asked to close their eyes and quickly point with their left hand to their right hand (or to where they perceived it to be). After having experienced the illusion for a while, they would point to the location of the invisible hand rather than to their real hand.
The researchers also measured the brain activity of the participants using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Perceiving the invisible hand illusion led to increased activity in the same parts of the brain that are normally active when individuals see their real hand being touched or when participants experience a prosthetic hand as their own.
âTaken together, our results show that the sight of a physical hand is remarkably unimportant to the brain for creating the experience of oneâs physical self,â says Arvid Guterstam.
The researchers hope that the results of their study will offer insight into future research on phantom pain in amputees.
âThis illusion suggests that the experience of phantom limbs is not unique to amputated individuals, but can easily be created in non-amputees,â says the principal investigator, Dr Henrik Ehrsson, Docent at the Department of Neuroscience. âThese results add to our understanding of how phantom sensations are produced by the brain, which can contribute to future research on alleviating phantom pain in amputees.â
