It’s summer. People are going out with their friends. I’m usually at school, work, at home. And I do have a decent amount of free time too. Deadpool movie: the unpopular opinion review

Lots of spoilers!

I’m hesitant to write a review because every single person on the planet has already written one and although I haven’t found one I actually agree with completely it seems redundant the stick another one out there but I said if enough of you asked I would do one and so I’m fulfilling my promise.

Let me begin by saying I’m titling this “unpopular opinion” because, again, I seem to have seen the movie differently than everyone else.

Was the movie funny? Yes. Was it the nonstop laugh fest that people are making it out to be? No. That’s why I like this movie. Deadpool is always most appealing to me when he can be funny one second and devastatingly depressing the next and this movie got it exactly right. It was a real back and forth from seeing Deadpool be his stereotypical self who makes light of everything and then seeing him really suffer from all the torment he’s been through. The medical torture and the ableism was intense and perfectly done; I would’ve been fine if they made the torture more explicit (you don’t even see him bleed) but I think it put a fine point on how these things are more damaging inside than out. If you guys like when Deadpool gets really depressing and makes you cry you’ll love this movie.

Partially on that note, despite everything I didn’t think they would make Deadpool so close to canon but the fact that the one mission you see him on when he is still a “bad guy” before becoming Deadpool is taking on a client for free who is a young woman being stalked by a man and he puts the fear of God into him. Deadpool so often gets mischaracterized as misogynistic when in fact this is how we actually see him act in the comic. They even go a little further, making him blatantly observant of sexism when he was systematically taking down henchmen and came across a woman, stopping to ask her if it would be sexes if he hit her or even more sexist if he didn’t. It was very cute and funny and not something you would even see Deadpool from the comic do.

I glossed over the humor above to talk about it separately: were the jokes dirty and gallows humor like everyone says? Yes. I love this type of humor and so I loved the jokes. In fact, I can’t recall ever thinking “that fell a little flat” even though I was in the theater with the worst group of people who didn’t laugh at anything. It’s exactly like the comic book (with more cursing, they can’t really get away with that in the comics.)

Was the movie extremely problematic? Of course. But, again, it was exactly what we see in the comic books. Deadpool jokes about hiding the cure for blindness from Blind Al. Is that horrible? Yes. Is it funny? Absolutely. These two disabled people making ableist jokes toward each other was the most realistic depiction of disabled people I’ve ever seen in a movie. If they hadn’t done these jokes, if you hadn’t seen Deadpool suffer from ableism but also joke about it, I would’ve been disappointed, solely as a disabled fan.

I didn’t find the “rape jokes” to be offensive in the same manner I see most people who are complaining about them do.

Here are the rape jokes people are referring to in their context

1. This one you see in the trailer: NTW uses her powers to knockdown Angel Dust and Deadpool looks on, impressed, saying “I hate to be the guy that pressures her into prom sex”

2. Deadpool is threatening to beat up a man for stalking a woman and accidentally makes an double entendre about hitting the man with his “hard places”

The joke was that Deadpool naïvely made the comment and then tried to make it seem like he had known what he was doing by having him say “that didn’t come out the way I meant it…or did it?” and kissing the man on the cheek before letting him go

3. Wade and Vanessa are comparing how bad their lives are and Wade confides he had been molested by his uncle and Vanessa counters that she had been molested by multiple uncles

The joke part was that it was supposed to be funny that they would try to impress each other by having bad lives (they also talk about being physically and mentally abused) but what happened to them isn’t a joke, it’s actually a part of canon

4. Wade is approached by a man who offers to cure his cancer and Wade is angry and accuses him of looking like someone who would lure children into his van (meaning he looked like a child molester) and when he turned the man away he warned him to leave because a school was nearby

5. Vanessa was pegging Wade (butt fucking with a strap on dildo) and when she first puts it in he clearly feels pain and says “nope, nope.” The situation was completely consensual and the scene ended right there.

I would only consider this to be a rape joke if we saw Vanessa then not be considerate of Wade’s comfort but they in no way lead you to believe this and I don’t believe it’s in bad taste to show him not immediately enjoying anal sex. Of course it could be triggering, but it’s incredibly realistic… Sex doesn’t work like it does in most fanfiction

5. Deadpool reaches back and accidentally grabs the genitals of Colossus and asks “Dad?” before turning around to see what he was holding

I don’t wish to speak personally or even vaguely about my “credibility” to speak on this so I will defer to those I spoke to and the sheer number of comments I’ve seen about all of this. Most people who were already fans of Deadpool and were aware of his sexual abuse and the fact that he makes light of it as a coping mechanism really appreciated how everything was done and overwhelmingly those who identified as rape/CSA survivors were happy with it because they related to using humor as a coping mechanism.

Would most survivors appreciate this humor? No. It’s simply that those who are and also happen to be fans of Deadpool seem to be fans of him partially because they relate to the way he has survived.

I tend to be a little anal-retentive when it comes to subjects like these so I can come to accurate conclusions so I’ve been keeping statistics on it and overwhelmingly I’ve seen more people happy with the way it was done then people who were upset but all of the tweets and blog posts that got attention were the ones in which people were outraged.

Not to say that the people who were offended were wrong to be so; some people were using this movie as their first introduction to the character and were completely unprepared for this and even for some of those who were prepared for triggering content no one knew the exact context so it was hard for some to prepare themselves.

Our community could be having a very important conversation about sexual molestation, the realities of the aftermath, the variety of coping mechanisms survivors have, and whether you can represent those who use humor and still be respectful of the subject but… No one is having this conversation and whenever I try to start it in a public forum the conversation immediately unravels. People who are offended are even more offended that you would want to talk about their offense and those few disgusting people who seem to be reentering our community now (not new fans, people that have been fans in the past and have not been a part of the fandom community but are now attempting to enter it and are appalled that “social justice warriors” have taken everything over) they are offended at the very idea that anyone would be offended.

People have also criticized the movie for making transmisogynistic jokes and there definitely are some; Deadpool jokes that Angel Dust must have a penis because she’s so strong. Yes, Deadpool is canonically gender fluid but these are still transmisogynistic jokes. I don’t think anyone should defend them because they weren’t supposed to be defensible, Deadpool is supposed to be ignorant and inconsiderate (at least of people he doesn’t love)

There’s also been criticism that Deadpool is not blatantly pansexual enough in the movie. I understand that people wanted irrefutable proof that he might also be interested in men and non-binary people but unless he had a sex scene with someone other than Copycat or said “I am pansexual” I don’t think anyone would consider it blatant enough. The story itself was very short and compact and about his relationship with Copycat, along the way we do see him flirting with men and kissing a man; it was done the exact same way it was in the comic.

Would I have wanted Deadpool to be with anyone besides Copycat? No. She is so important to his origin story and the fact that she is a woman does not take away from his pansexuality. Do I also want irrefutable proof that he considers himself pansexual? Of course. (Note that we have it in the comic but technically this is Deadpool from the movie universe, Earth 10005, so we also need it confirmed in the movie) I didn’t expect any more than they gave us as Fox was terrified of his sexuality turning off movie viewers but the director and producer warned us about this ahead of time. They want to make it explicit in the next movie and to be able to do that they have to prove that people will pay to see a sexual and gender minority in a superhero movie.

Maybe I’m being too nice, but I understand the situation and am excited to back the director and producer with my support so they can do what they actually want to in the next movie and that is to at least show Deadpool have a romantic/sexual relationship with a man. This isn’t speculation, I’m sure you’ve seen all the news about Ryan Reynolds asking to have a boyfriend to the next film.

Were there things I didn’t like about the movie? Of course.

I love the character Copycat and was disappointed to see they didn’t make her a mutant (yet) although I must say I was surprised at how well I enjoyed this depiction of the character. I was worried about everyone insisting that she was sassy and tough because one of the most appealing things about Copycat is how sensitive she is and how vulnerable she is (being kicked out of her house when she was a child for being a mutant and only being able to survive by going into sex work) but they did a great job of making her realistically vulnerable emotionally.

And here is another unpopular opinion… We were constantly told how violent and full of gore this movie would be and it just didn’t live up to expectations for me. I had the same problem with the Deadpool Kills series, it was touted as being adult material and although it was violent it always ended up in a bunch of blood. I admit to being a gore whore so my expectations were high but you don’t even see anyone’s intestines falling out of their bodies! Blood is great but no guts means no gore.

Anyway, I loved the movie.

You know who did the teen hero thing right? Kim Possible, that’s who. She never messed around with that secret identity thing or with not letting her parents or friends know what she was doing so she never had to deal with, “Oh, I’m gonna miss this important family event to save the world”  or, “What’ll happen in my friends find out my secret identity?” bullcrap. It was like, “Mom, Dad. I gotta go deal with this Drakken sitch,” and they’d just be like, “Have fun. Tell Ron we said hi.” She had that hero/personal life balance thing on lock.
