   she sighed, careful not to let amusement show on her face, careful not to break the facade she had been building ever since her arrival in Kirkwall. Not that there was any use for that around him. He’d known her before all this, before she had been Bianca the Amell, before she had become anything but the loudmouthed kid that got into trouble just for the sake of it. Not that what she was doing now was that different from back then.

  “if I had wanted my back door or…package” she wasn’t even sure just what he was referring to “discussed I would have stopped by the Blooming Rose on my way here.” But still, there was jest in her voice, her eyes. Not that she had a choice around him.

   “I’ll take the usual.”

   “ goodness gracious !! you’re in a good mood today. ” casually he placed the glass he’d been cleaning back under the counter and took a puff of his cigarette before starting to make her drink. mixology was fun in the sense that your mind could sort of go to sleep while you made the drinks, but so fun in the sense that it required you to have your sleeves rolled up most of the time. he’d taken to wearing thin cloth bracers around his forearms, for obvious reasons.

   “ i was expecting, i don’t know, a ‘shut up’. a ‘shut up and die’. a ‘shut up and die, you pig’. i can go on. ” he made her drink, pushing it across the counter and wiping his with a flourish before hanging the towel and taking a seat opposite her, cigarette in hand. “ so what brings you back to this part of town, sweetheart? you come here often? ”

   he let out a low whistle as she strode into the bar, composed as always, hair covering her face like she was a celebrity. that woman knew how to make an entrance. idly joseph dried a glass behind the counter, his half-finished cigarette resting on a nearby ashtray. the look on her face made him want to straighten his tie. 

   “ sorry, ma’am, but for deliveries you want the back door, ” he joked, a grin spreading over his face at the sight of her, and winked. at her face, he continued: “ because that package has my name written all over it! ” ---@bloodiedamell​

               ❛ really? that’s your pitch? ❜  the flirting, while duly noted ( and mildly appreciated ), would have to be held on the backburner ———-  hawke smelled something sour, and the natural aroma of piss and hot pennies that generally permeated throughout kirkwall seemed to have very little to do with it.

❛ with what vague amount of respect is due in these … graphic pleasantries, i’d say you sound like a poster child for the black market. the shadiest part. so shady you don’t even need ointment. ❜ admittedly, her interrogation skills could use work; she had always been more straightforward when it came to ‘getting results.’ besides, diplomacy wasn’t exactly a common trait in fereldens. 

❛ not to mention that it’d be completely irresponsible to sweep yet ANOTHER apostate with dubious intents under my rug of rag-tag screwballs, so, really. before i do absolutely just that, you’re gonna have to be generous with the details here. you know —— so i have good reasoning for later. like, say … your name, for example. just for funsies. ❜

hawke then mirrored him in his lean, arms tucked into each other, save for the quick tap she planted just below her right eye.

   “ black market? ” he scoffed. “ madam. you wound me. i’m a perfectly legal apostate and/or smuggler. ” save the blood magic, but there was no need to tell her everything right away. save something for the second date, yeah? keep a bit of mystery. lovely.

   “ name’s joseph. i’m chasind. well, you probably knew that, you’re fereldan, aren’t you? we’re practically best friends already. anyway, i was peacefully living with my tribe until one day i accidentally make a little bit of fire and kill a guy, the next thing you know i’m living in a shoebox and wearing a dress, ablah blah blah blah. one lifetime of weird shit later, i escape and come to this shithole. friend of the mages and all that, yeah? and here we are. ”

   were he taller than her, he would have leaned down to make level eye contact; sadly, that was not the case, so he settled for leaning his chin on his knuckles and giving her an intense gaze. “ my point is this: i like helping mages. you, apparently, also like helping mages. so i want to help you help me help mages. capiche? ”

   “Then leave.” She meant it to be mean, cutting but all that comes out is a pathetic vulnerability. They have had this argument countless times, both too stubborn to listen to the other, both too selfish to let go of what they long for so badly. He desires freedom and she knows he can’t have it - she desires him and knows it can never be, not while they are caged in here like animals. 

With her he has something to come back to and that is what will distract him, will make it possible for them to capture him again. She loves him, loves him more than she could ever admit to - loves him enough to burn the bridge, to ensure that freedom is the only way he will have.

   “Go, bring their abuse onto you. Don’t come crawling back to me when they catch you again - I won’t be waiting.” She’s never been a good liar, but she tries her best.

   “ perhaps the people like me already had a bad name and i’m just making the most of it. ” the hero of ferelden knows you’re a blood mage. the champion of kirkwall knows you’re a blood mage. you’re really not very good at keeping a low profile, joseph. he gestured flamboyantly, taking a little curtsey. “ i promise, champion, once you get past the whole maleficar apostate thing i’m really quite nice. don’t generalise, messere, not all mages— ”

   “ you can’t ask me to do this, ” he whispers, voice hoarse, hands shaking around the dagger. “ you’re still in there. we can still— you can still— ” his voice breaks off as his face crumples in a held-back sob. her features are distorted, flesh pulled back from her face to the bulbous growths around her neck. she is an abomination, but a beautiful one, her mangled limbs and clawed hands hanging limply at her sides. she was fighting the demon - she had always been strong as iron. every second he wasted was a second she was battling to hold the demon at bay, but he couldn’t do it. 

   and yet, letting her corpse be desecrated by a demon was hardly any better. slit your wrist, man, and kill the only girl you ever loved. 

   “ i’m sorry, ” he whispers, tears streaking alongside the blood that trickled down his face. that infernal, hellish blood that had wrought so much despair and taken everything from he and bianca both, by the power of the blood they were made and undone. “ in another life. ” his voice breaks, and he draws the blade across his wrist.

Another smile as she refrains from answering, preferring to pull him close again. It’s almost surreal - but he’s here and he wants her and that’s all that matters. Just when it had begun mattering to her, she doesn’t dare ask.

   “oh, shut up.” But there’s no heat behind her words. If anything, there’s a hint of embarrassment as blood rises to her cheeks. For a moment she damns her pale complexion, the way she is sure to be glowing now. She isn’t used to such words, such affection - it’s something she has only dreamt of until now, late at night, thoughts she had denied even to herself.

She kisses him again, more fervor this time, lest he notice her sudden lack of confidence. 

   “The only reason the templars like to keep an eye on me is to make sure I don’t get into situations such as this one.”

   joseph’s face fell a little despite the warm flush on his brown cheeks from the fervent kisses. “ indeed. ” he brushed his lips lightly against hers before lowering his head, knocking his forehead against hers and staying there, leaning against her, his arms swaddling her. 

   “ it’s not right, ” he said, incredibly quiet. “ they shouldn’t be able to take this from us. this, these moments, these are what’s worth having. ” he drew a sharp breath and let it out as a sigh, holding her tighter, and closed his eyes. “ it’s not right. ” 

   for now she’s here in his arms and all’s right with their contained little cage of a world, but one footstep around a corner could change that. one sorry bastard doing his job could take everything from them. a low rage burned in the back of his throat and made a lump there, and his wrists felt incredibly hot. he wanted to take her to the wilds. he wanted them to make new spells together, freeze a lake over for the thrill of it and slide on the ice. he wanted to see his family again, wanted her to see them too, wanted to have his affections honestly and not hide them like it was a crime to love.
