herbs and their changing properties
Okay, someone on discord told me about this and Iād never even thought about it before but honestly it makes so much sense and I just had to tell y'all about it so buckle up.
We all know that herbs, crystals, colours, even planets have different properties. (I mean you can't exactly put Neptune in your spell jar, but you get the gist)Ā We also all know that herbs especially have much looser definitions property wise. Itās very rare that you'd find a herb that could only be used for one specific spell, right? Like basil, rosemary, etc are all very general herbs- I could use rosemary to have really awesome sex one night, and prevent nightmares the next. This is all mainly because of intent. Donāt get me wrong, amplifying your spells with corresponding colours, times etc is never bad, and I definitely encourage it, but you can cast a successful spell without those things. Intention determines everything about your spell, and what your herb is going to be doing- if I put basil in the family dinner with the intention of bringing us closer together, it wouldn't bring me good finance, because Iām not calling upon that specific property.Ā
But that being said, if I asked 50 witches what a certain herb did, 49 of them would probably tell me relatively the same thing. Thats because herbs, and their properties are partly influenced by culture. For example, if I was born into a family where we all used mugwort for example for a certainĀ purpose, Iād continue to use it in that way, continue setting my intention for it to work that way (obviously, said purpose being within reason). So what if the family is an entire country? If you take a look at, for example, Germany, and German lore and spirituality, you might notice that certain herbs properties arenāt completely the same as said herbs properties in South Africa. Like Bacchus and Dionysus, Ares and Mars, Juno and Hera. All are (no doubt real) the same beings/essence interpreted, and presented differently based on culture. TheirĀ āpropertiesā -in this case attributes- are different, but still similar. It's the same with herbsĀ Ā (I know this isnāt a stellar analogy don't shoot me). Generational intent sets some of the properties for certain herbs as well as other attributes based on their pre existing knowledge. Iām not trying to say one day I could just decide that mugwort was good for say, communication with nothing else to support that, just like it would be ridiculous for the Romans to describe Mars as the god of peace and comradery. But, when a definition is within reason, assigned properties stick- causing cultural differences in witchcraft.
Basically what Iām trying to say is properties of herbs, and the changing of different definitions greatly relies on culture- from said herbs presented to mortals a certain way, to an overall generational belief. Different countries, that come with different cultures present different spirituality- including different definitions of their herbs. Ā
In conclusion, everyone probably already knew about this but my dumbass didn't so. here you go. Id also like to point out that said dumbass spent an entire afternoon confusing paganism with culture which made research..interesting. I also accidentally deleted this whole fucking thing twice.Ā
what a questionable start to a blog.Ā
