Samira comes of a deeply rooted magical line of witches, dating as far back as the early Persian Empire which is now modern day Iran, where her family originates. The Mohsen Witches were and still are to this day a powerful clan, gifted with the powers of clairvoyance, healing, and various forms of divination. They were highly sought after for their abilities by the poor and rich common folk who searched for knowledge of the future, healing of common ailments, wounds, and diseases as well as the occasional curse and hex. Her family’s purpose was always to help others in anyway they can, even as time went on and the world changed and shifted, molding into a colder, crueler and at times in its own way a beautiful world, the Mohsen’s continued to help people both magical and non-magical alike. Samira herself, strives to be of assistance, helping others as her ancestors had for thousands of years, however there is a darkness that lurks, just at the peripheral, beckoning her and threatening to drag her from the light she so wants to be a part of. A darkness that nearly consumed her thirteen years ago.
Many who have met the young Israeli-born witch don’t know that she once had a sister, an older sister. The two of them were closer to each other than anyone else in their lives and Samira looked up to her sister Yasmin, for she was every bit the witch she had ever hoped to be: Beautiful, Confident, Loyal and Strong. She possessed a power that many had not seen in the family for several generations. Samira followed her sister’s every move, wanting to learn as much from her so that she too could be good and well practiced witch. However as they got older, Yasmin’s demeanor began to change. She was quieter, more withdrawn and drifted from her little sister. She began to hang out with the more dubious teenagers within the coven, ones who craved the dark arts. The adults did nothing but give their children stern warnings of the dangers of black magic and chalked it up to simply teenage curiosity, but that did nothing to deter Yasmin’s fascination with the darkest sides of witchcraft. It started with a little blood ritual here, to get back at a girl who called her a freak in P.E. with curse and a little summoning there, invoking evil spirits. Yasmin wanted absolute freedom and power. Her desire increased with every spell and every ritual she performed.
Samira was no stranger to the transformation that took place. She knew everything about Yasmin so there was no amount of makeup or sweaters that hide the physical and mental changes. Yasmin’s once warm complexion took on a pale pallor, her eyes which were once vibrant and fiery brown were dulled and sunken in, there were cuts and scars along her body and her bubbly and outgoing personality shifted and she became even more quiet and sullen. Samira tried finding out what was happening by confronting her sister but it only led to bitter arguments every time. So instead she took matters into her own hands by sneaking into her sister’s room, digging up whatever information she could, following her sister’s every move. One night, Samira followed her sister down into their basement. Behind the clutter and mess, her sister had set up a makeshift alter. It was small but it did the job. Samira watched hidden, while her sister performed her spells, calling upon evils every single dark or full moon. Sometimes there would be others, who entered through the cellar door, the same dubious teenagers that she hung out with. The things Samira had seen frightened her and in the back of her mind she had a feeling that Yasmin knew…knew that she had followed her down into the basement and watched in the shadows.
On one particular evening, at the height of the full moon, Samira like always, followed her sister, however this time they had left the house, going towards the woods. Samira kept her distance, hiding behind a thick oak tree. She watched her sister set up a large circle of candles and herbs. She saw the four other teenagers make their way over. She watched them begin their ritual and then she heard her name, five pairs of eyes were staring right into her direction she could remember nothing other than being dragged from the behind the tree by one of the boys and thrown into the middle of circle. They taunted her and held her down as she screamed, she watched as her sister took a knife into her arm carving symbols and taking her blood in a chalice. She spoke in a language Samira did not understand, smearing blood over the faces of the others there.
What Samira saw next that night she would never wish upon her greatest enemy. She had blacked out halfway and when she awoke she found herself in her bed tucked away as if nothing happened. There were no cuts or bruises on her arm and she thought it all a horrifying dream. However, once she stepped out into her living room the whole coven was standing around her parents, who sat sullen. They told her what had happened, that her sister was found in the woods with a group of teenagers, dead. They had suspected werewolves were behind the attack but upon inspection they knew it was black magic. They asked her if she knew anything and she told them, breaking down into body wracking sobs, she told them everything that had happened. All the nights she witnessed and the darkness that consumed her sister and her friends, but she mentioned nothing of the night for she did not know if it were a dream or reality.
The coven leader called a meeting to cleanse the house and to cleanse Samira’s mind and spirit but no amount of healing could help close the wounds within Samira nor take away the new ability she was bestowed upon ever since that night. The ability to see and communicate with the dead. First it was the dead teenagers from that night, howling echoes that taunted or begged for mercy. Sometimes she was left awake for days at a time by their cries.
Throughout the years more forsaken souls and spirits sought her out and they all came to her seeking help that she knew not how to give, so she kept what she saw to herself. That was until she started seeing her sister’s spirit. They started as glimpses from the corner or her eye, gone when she turned her attention over fully but always there when she wasn’t looking, a mangled spirit dripping with dark aura. It taunted her night and day, tempting her, trying to draw her into the same darkness that took Yasmin’s life.
Desperate for help, Samira left her homeland of Israel just after her service with the IDF and moved to the United States. She wanted nothing to do with the evil that took her sister and longed to separate herself from the place where it all happened. She wanted to be a good witch, who helped others as she was taught to do all of her life. She wanted to help put the souls that came to her at rest and to stay on the right-hand path, but she knew she could not yield this power alone. Through her journey’s, she heard of a witch in Louisiana that had extraordinary talent. She moved to the town of Salt Creek just outside of New Orlean, where she heard that perhaps this powerful leader of the Coven of the Moon could help her with her issue.
