History
Hal and Helena Harper shared the womb, but grew to become much different from each other. Helena was the sharp minded of the two, the one who took the lead, who stole his burdens and did her best to carry them on her own. Hal was her perfect counterpart, much more naive than his sister, who let himself get carried away by the details. Ever since he was a child, the world spoke to him in a different way, lights and colors, sounds and scenes; he inspected every little thing, nothing too unimportant for him. Despite his curious nature, the bigger scene always managed to escape him. Helena was the one with the whys, leaving only the hows to him.
Unlike his twin sister, Hal never fought the path laid out for him: he never bothered with where it would take him by its end, but the journey instead, more than pleased to star in school plays and steal every scene he could for himself. Hal Harper was a natural born star, his father said, and though he couldn’t tell whether she meant it or not, Helena agreed.
Despite his own conformity, he knew what bothered Helena about the whole ordeal. He knew her better than herself sometimes, better than anyone else, and she never had to explain herself to him: Hal knew how she worked, what got under her skin, which of her smiles were polite and which were genuine. Helena wasn’t just his sister, but half of himself, and his heart beat in her chest as much as hers did in his.
Sharing secrets was easy for the twins, trading looks over the dinner table and communicating without speaking a word. In the absence of a strong parental figure, they became each other’s father and mother, their entire worlds. No matter how much his father doted on him for following after his footsteps, it was Helena he aimed to make proud, to see in the crowd when he stood on the stage and delivered his lines: she was his rock and he could only hope to become hers in return, but within the years and little by little, the twins grew apart.
Helena lost herself in her studies and a newfound obsession with the creatures of the night while Hal had little interest in them. Yes, the news that they had always been there, lurking from the shadows, was baffling and it intrigued him, but the aspiring actor didn’t know any vampires and he had always been an open-minded man: humans weren’t alone in the world. Big deal! Now, aliens, that would’ve been something. Life went on.
One after another, vampires came out of the coffin. Celebrities scandalized the country by assuming they were one of them, or by dating one of the creatures. Hal thought that was all too amusing, offhandedly bringing up the subject and listening to Helena rant on the mysterious creatures and their culture for the next fifteen minutes, but he was done thinking about them shortly after that.
Perhaps it was his lack of self-preservation, or even paying proper attention to the undead and the dangers they were said to pose to humankind --- the queen had promised they didn’t mean humans any harm and why would he question that when they presented themselves to the world? --- but in the end, it was Hal and not Helena who had the first encounter with one of them, his own naivete luring him closer to the beautiful stranger in the club.
Hal didn’t know what a vampire was supposed to look like, but he didn’t expect it to look like her. The brunette didn’t seem to be more than human, there was nothing about her that screamed of monstrous doings or a creature that belonged to another century. There was something different about her, though, something graceful, alluring, something mysterious that had him crossing the crowd and approaching the woman at the bar. His boyish charm often got him what he wanted, but she didn’t seem impressed by it and, for some reason, that only made him try harder.
Hal left the club with the stranger that night and he never came back home. It was as if his worries had been kissed away by the vampiress and he didn’t mind looking back. Malin Gustafsson took him for a servant and a lover, another beautiful piece for her collection, a man too naive and warm-hearted for his own good. The woman whispered that nothing else mattered to him but she, and the young man let the power of suggestion warp his man into forgetting his beloved sister, his doting father and even his passion for acting.
Malin Gustafsson was his everything for the years that preceded his turning and his sole purpose was to serve and adore her, and he turned out to be quite good at it. Ever the charmer, even as a human, he found ways to entertain the vampiress, taking care of her agenda and making sure her days were as smooth as she’d like them. It was an accident that caused his near death and, on a whim, instead of letting go of the young man like she was supposed to, she fed him her blood, stealing his soul away from death. Turning came with a cost, however, and the fledgling remembered every single thing the vampire took from him.
It was with a heavy heart that he learnt his father had taken his life away after his disappearance and Hal couldn’t help but let the grief and guilt wash over himself. For a fleeting second, he caught sight of his twin through the crowd and he saw in her eyes the recognition of something frightful. Then he was gone, dragged away from his twin sister by his sire and into a new city, Salt Creek, where he was to stay by her side and learn to control himself before he could live on his own in such a state. Hal was heartbroken, consumed with grief and guilt, but he knew she was right, even if he hated her. He couldn’t be near Helena now, not when he could hear every pulsing vein beneath her flesh and it made his mouth water. Instead of running away, he stayed and he learnt.
Now…
He lives at the palace with Malin Gustafsson, the other council members and their servants, as well as the queen. Hal is profoundly confused by this new life and he doesn’t fully understands who he is or what he is supposed to do with himself. His emotions are on edge, as is with most fledglings, and while he allows Malin to teach him control, he blames her for the death of his father and refrains from seeking her advice on anything personal.
Relationships
Helena Harper - His twin sister is the most important person in his entire life and if he weren’t so afraid of ripping her throat out, Hal wouldn’t stay away from her. In part, he is ashamed of the fact his disappearance might have caused their father’s suicide too. Does she blame him? He surely blames himself.
Malin Gustafsson - Before his turning, he thought what he felt for the vampiress was love, but now he suspects that was too just a product of her allure. There is a part of him that hates her with all his might and another, the blood bond, he supposes, that makes him crave her company and mentorship. Hal doesn’t know how to forgive her, though, and he keeps this confusion to himself.
Rosalia Grey - Living in the palace alongside the vampire queen has put him in the unique position of casually running into the child queen from time to time. Sometimes Hal forgets who she is and what she is capable of, confessing to her what he can’t to his own sire.
Brendan Dockery - Caught in similar positions, Hal and the queen’s spokesperson became each other’s confidantes: serving their vampire mistresses is no easy task, much less when you are still learning how to function as a vampire yourself. The two often indulge on less than professional activities such as drinking and babbling when their bosses are occupied with a council meeting, forming a comfortable friendship.
