That's what Matt heard on the cold night he was working as usual. Bart was a tough guy and the captain of the fishing boat where Matt had worked since he was a teenager. He was used to all that, the mess that ensued when it rained. Let's just say Bart's boat was never the most stable, but it could handle the problem.

"fix the sailboat for me now!"

"got it."

Matt sprinted to the sailboat, climbing a bit high up where the thick ropes were; he had experience, he knew how everything worked. He clung to the large wooden pillar, even though it was soaked and his hands ached from so much friction with the ropes, he continued the work; it was what he did best.

He did everything he could, and as soon as he finished, and the boat became more stable, except for the aggressive rocking of the large waves, he observed the mess from where he was, locating where else he could help, until he looked at the sea, and saw. A single bioluminescent thread, passing quickly right where he was looking, was small from where he stood, but he saw it.

He ignored it due to the gravity of the current situation, but it stayed in his mind for the rest of the chaotic night. After catching enough fish they needed, they finally had firm ground. The decks were soaked from the rain, but at least most of them were okay.

Bart grabbed Matt's shoulder, gave it a firm squeeze, and shook his head.

"thank you, son, you did a great job. Now go home, okay? You've done enough for today."

Although Matt hated Bart's tone, as if he hadn't done anything all night, he just nodded and left, without the raincoat he usually wore, just going home.

As soon as he arrived at his small house in the middle of the island, between a local market and a shop selling overpriced surfboards, He opened the door, took off his soaked shoes, and went to the kitchen. It was small, of course, but he was already used to it. He took off his shirt, spread it out on a chair in the kitchen, grabbed a beer from the refrigerator, and leaned against the counter.

He took a sip and pondered what he had seen earlier. It was late at night; he didn't really have much to think about.

Then a characteristic meow came from the back door, which was in the kitchen, and Matt opened it as usual. It was a random stray cat that he let stay at his house; it was orange, it didn't have a name, but Matt nicknamed it...

"Wait a minute, Manny, I need to sort this out... make sure you don't leave the house."

He grabbed a new shirt, even knowing it would get wet again, and went out. Ignoring the heavy rain falling on him, he went straight to the port. Bart wouldn't mind if he borrowed the boat, right?

Then Matt began his search, venturing into the worst waters he had ever been in. He had never seen waves so big, and he prayed that he wouldn't break the boat with each wave he passed.

So he placed the large fishing net underwater and began to devise a quick strategy: to pass by where they had been before; he remembered, he could do it. After long, difficult moments, some where he thought he had caught something, he continued the search.

He glanced quickly out the boat window for stability, and saw it again, eyes fixed on the bright spot.With all the strength he had, he moved the net toward the quick spot he was looking for.

He did everything he could, when a giant wave hit him. It didn't break the boat, but he knew that any longer there, he was dead. When he lifted the net, he ran over to the net and looked up.

And then he saw her.

a bright strand of hair, the same one he had seen.

She struggled, wanting to get out of there, but he was too surprised; their eyes even met for a second before Matt returned to the control center , moving the boat back. Upon reaching a calmer area, he went out again and saw the beautiful creature he had just captured.

"what are you!?"

he shouted She didn't answer, looked at him, and continued trying to get out of where he had trapped her.

"wait, I'll get you out of there. just stay calm, okay?"

He calmly lowered the net to his level, observed her. for a few more seconds, before finally getting to work on removing the net from her.He worked carefully, but it was necessary.

The hallucinatory girl, half fish, was now beside him, looking at him as if he were a monster, or some kind of alien.

"you... you good, right? are you hurt? or..."

His gaze was fixed on her; for him, sirens had always been just a legend.

"..fuck you're beautiful.."

He sighed, a whisper, before he realized what he had said, and closed his eyes, trying to forget what he had just said.

"forget it, uhh... you talk? like, you understand me? you..."

The words caught in his throat when the pretty girl in front of him suddenly had legs; he didn't know sirens could do that. She stood up, faced him, her expression was difficult to read, he didn't know what to think.

"of course I understand you, idiot."

She had a slight accent, her voice was melodic, she didn't seem so happy.

"okay, I got it... you understand me. and.. you got a name siren?"

"im not telling you my name , stranger"

Matt lets out a dry laugh, almost a sigh.

"nameless, cool"

The girl turned around, looking determined and ready to go back into the water, but he stopped her.

"wait a minute, I almost died in this rough sea, I got soaked in the rain, and you give me a lecture and then leave?"

The pretty girl turns to him again.

"look, you better watch how you talk to me, you hear? You hunted me down because you wanted to."

"fine, you can go then, I'll pretend I didn't see a siren in front of me."

But the girl didn't stop with the intention of jumping; she just stayed there leaning against the boat's railing, looking at the waves, now calmer than before, beneath the large boat.

"I can't, I can only become a siren again on the next full moon."

"seriously?"

After that, he took her back to land. They stopped at a nearby deck; the sea now seemed calmer than before, and the mabha was getting closer and closer. After getting off the boat, they stared at each other strangely.

Matt scratched the back of his neck, glancing at her, often avoiding that sharp look she always gave him, as if she were disappointed but also something else.

"so... I can take you to a guesthouse nearby... or if you have somewhere to go, I don't know."

"I have nowhere to go, unless you pay for my stay until the next moon, so what?"

Matt was even scared; he certainly had enough money for the next batch of beer and cat food for the next week, not a whole week's stay in the overpriced inns next to his house, so he had no choice but to let her focus on his place.

"okay, you'll stay at my house, there's enough space... I think, and you'll like it."

"what? And the inn? I thought I'd get a better room after being treated like a fish, like you do every day."

"uuuh bad news...? okay, I'll stop now, but seriously, my place is much better, I promise, and very comfortable, I swear."

She wasn't exactly a professional with humans, but this certainly wasn't the human she expected to find, not because he was somewhat poor, but because... It genuinely made sense to him, it felt... like home.
