Adele Rootstein x Barbie Roberts

As a set designer I got my start in the field designing window displays and styling mannequins at the Bloomingdale’s on Lexington and 59th. 

One of the most memorable collaborations I worked on was in 2009 for Barbie’s upcoming 50th anniversary. The high end mannequin artisan extraordinaire Adele Rootstein was commissioned by Mattel to recreate Barbie in human, life-like proportions. 

This was an over the top celebration of Ms. Roberts in her most iconic fashions featuring looks inspired by Barbie throughout the decades.

The Rootstein mannequin sculpts were designed to be in scale with human proportions and features. Every wig, every lash, every detail was in homage to the ultimate girl. 

Some people thought this was a bizarre and kitschy collab but for me it was a collaboration of love and celebration of Ms. Roberts’ enduring captivation over the years.

I’ve never seen anything quite like this collaboration and sadly, I doubt I ever will again.
