Datura Stramonium, *jimsonweed*
[El Toloache : Celle devant qui on incline la tĆŖte avec respect.]
This is an extract from the āDictionary of medicinal and poisonous plants of Franceā by P.V Fournier, renowned French herbalist in the 1950s.
ā
Popular Names: Ā
Mole Grass; Wizarding grass; Magiciansā grass; Herb of demoniacs; Devilās Grassā¦
(ā¦) Habitat :
It is in gardens, wasteland, rubble, vineyards, fields and the sands of valleys that this species is usually found, whose size varies from 0.30m to 1m. Its flowers are 6 to 8cm long, they bloom in the evening and close in bad weather.
The capsules 5cm long and covered with spines contain up to 400 seeds which retain their germination capacity for up to a *century*.
(ā¦)
History:
It was the famous Viennese toxicologist A. von Stoerck (1762) who introduced Stramonium into the medical field; he administered it in epilepsy, convulsions and mental insanities.
Numerous tests subsequently carried out by various practitioners have shown that this medication is successful about one in four times (alienation), and sometimes better with regard to different psychological neuroses. But, because of its dangers, Stramonium is now hardly used except in anti-asthma cigarettes. (They existed in France in the 80s and 90s; they were banned as a result of numerous poisonings.)
(ā¦)
Toxicity: Stramonium is a poison of action similar to that of Belladonna.
- In low doses, it produces dizziness, drowsiness, vision disturbances, weakening of sensitivity and muscle functions. - A higher dose causes diarrhea with colic or too much urine, irregular pulse, congestion of the face, dilation of the pupils, fantastic hallucinations, delirium, dizziness and progressive numbness of all muscles (implied: from the heart too.) (ā¦)
Properties: The properties of Stramonium are roughly those of Belladonna : anti-spasmodic, anti-asthma, anti-rheumatic and anti-neuralgic.
It has been used against nervous coughs, whooping cough, and nocturnal incontinence, either in the form of an infusion, tincture or extracts, or in fumigations.
- Against asthma, this last means is in common use: we smoke the leaves rolled into cigarettes or chopped and mixed with tobacco. - It is in nervous asthma (hear anxiety attacks), in irregular dyspnea (respiratory discomfort) that the medication is most successful. We should limit ourselves to one or two cigarettes a day. Do not exceed 1.50g of leaves per dose and do not renew more than twice. The relief begins when a kind of *dizziness* appears.
(ā¦)
Manual : - Infusion and decoction: I would not give the dosage and invite you to consult some interesting articles on dosages errors here.
- Cigarettes: 1g of dry leaf.
- Leaf tincture: Part of leaves (fresh or dry) for 5 alcohol; 5 to 30 drops in a suitable herbal tea.
- Ointment: 1 part of jimsonweed for 4 of lard.
