Duncan honestly didn’t mind whenever Blue bumped into him, but he grew more and more amused whenever she would apologize. He found himself always smirking or laughing around Blue. She was adorable and so amusing, even if him finding her entertaining put a strain of their friendship at times. He would never make fun of her and hoped she understood his teasing was all in good fun at the end of the day.
“It is, but so is not walking and texting. There’s no rush.” He explained, slowing to a stop. “This gives us time to plan anyway. I can buy the alcohol. I figure we can all split three bottles? Though Liv and I drink like fuckin’ pirates. Well, I only know Jack Sparrow, but you get the idea… What are you in the mood for?” He asked, stopping mid ramble and giving her a smile.
Blue gave a quick smile to Duncan as she stopped walking and send on a quick text to her mum. She pocketed the device before looking back to him. When he asked her what she would like to drink she replied without thinking. “Chocolate milk,” she said a little too confidently before realizing her mistake. “Oh, you mean what alcohol do I want,” she corrected herself with a slight red tinge to her cheeks. She always hated when she made mistakes like that. “I don’t care much, I can drink anything if I plug my nose.”
“Lesbian vampires,” whispered Nella. “How scandalous. I’m intrigued. We can lure our victims in with your innocent charm and my feminine wiles. And then when the moment is right, we strike.” On cue, she grazed her teeth on Blue’s neck and bit down lightly before breaking into laughter. She let go of her friend, patting her on the bum affectionately, before looking up to gaze at her in the mirror too.
“And leave me the only blonde in the gang?” demanded Nella in mock-horror. “What, Blue? You don’t like being mistaken for sisters or - god forbid - even twins, wherever we go? You would have me suffer the blonde jokes alone? You would desert me like that?” She stared at Blue with wide eyes for a moment before she winked conspiratorially. “Imagine the gang’s faces if we turned up tonight and you had red hair… a tempting thought.”
Blue giggled and playfully pushed Nella once she had let her go. She returned to idly sifting through items in front of her. “The only person that’s mistaken us for sisters was that drunken man who approached us at the pub last week.” Blue glanced with a smirk back over at her friend.
She glanced once again in the mirror. “Maybe you’re right, maybe red isn’t the right color.” She glanced along the shelves lined with wigs when something struck her. “Of course!” she burst excitedly and snagged a wig from the top row. “Blue.” And with that Blue had dawned a bright blue wig with a bob a top her head, switching out the red one. Seeing the look in Nella’s eyes, she warned her “Don’t tempt me.”
Riley fought back the urge to turn around and punch the small blonde in the face as she, once again, felt the familiar bump against her shoulder. She really did like Blue, of course she did - but it was fair to say even bloody Gandhi would be irritated by this point. She took a number of deep breaths, teeth clenched together, and fought very hard against her natural instinct. A bright and breezy false smile plastered on her face, Riley turned around. “Hm, it probably should be? You’ll be covered in bruises if ya carry on,” she chirped. It wasn’t until the words hung between them that she realised she may have inadvertently threatened the young girl with an underlying ‘and those bruises will more than likely be from either one of my fists’, but she let it go. Surely that’d be enough to make her put the bloody phone down.
Blue felt her throat tighten when Riley complained. She had obviously begun to annoy the girl. Confrontation wasn’t a language that Blue was familiar with. “Sorry,” she mumbled once again, something that was probably also becoming repetitive. “M’just trying to tell my mum that I’ll pick up groceries for her while I’m out, but I’m not good at doing... this.” The last word was coupled with Blue motioning from her phone to the space around her.
It was strange sometimes, the way the gang relied upon her. It was a nice feeling, a feeling Pippa craved more than she let on, but it always felt odd to her. Pippa wasn’t all that special nor was she particularly outgoing. Most would imagine Robbie on the front lines or even Duncan, Olivia or Frank. Really, anyone besides Pippa. They were brave and outspoken, definitely people who would scare off unwanted intruders on a night out. But sometimes Pippa took the reigns and while she could be far more brave than she realized, she was still surprised when people sought her out. Sarcasm aside, Pippa did know she was a good friend.
“Our pretty faces – we’d definitely get out of trouble, that’s for sure.” She smirked over at the blonde, knowing full well that keeping Frank and Duncan out of sight would be their greatest bet. When the two of them were together, it was double the fire, which meant double the trouble. It also meant doubt the fun, too.
Arriving at the pub, Pippa swung open the door for the two girls and took a seat in a booth near the back. “Alright, what do you want, love? A drink on me.”
Blue felt the cool air from inside the bar hit her suddenly as the two entered the pub. It made her shiver a bit and wish she had brought a jumper. Blue had always wished she had brought a jumper everywhere, but never did. It was just the struggle of being perpetually cold. Her and Pippa took their usual seat in the back corner.
She smiled when Pippa offered to buy her a drink. “That’s nice of you. A rum and coke, please.” Blue didn’t usually fight back when people did nice things for her. She was able to accept kindness without overthinking it. This was in part due to the fact that she always hated when people refused her kind gestures.
“Pippa,” Blue began after a beat of silence. “I have a question. So, you’re full name is Philippa, but you go by Pippa. Now I know I’m not one to judge odd nicknames, but how does that come about? Is there just a rule that says Philippa’s nickname is Pippa?” Blue’s mind was always bursting with questions, and sometimes she couldn’t help but ask all of them. At leasts he knew that Pippa was good with this sort of thing.
“I’ve been told that before, actually. Every time a group of teenagers come in here to fuck around, it always comes back to them fancying me – which, frankly, is absolutely terrifying. I don’t need to get arrested because a group of boys want to get in my knickers – I wouldn’t last in prison, I’m far too pretty.”
Watching Blue easily make her home inside the shop, Frank decided that his sorting could wait – despite his usual ability to multi-task, he liked listening to Blue fully. He knew how most people dismissed her, and it wasn’t right to do anything but give her everything – she deserved it, after all. She was brilliant in nature.
“Guess I’m not fucking around with the cereal aisles, then. It’s a shame, too – there’s a certain addicting factor when it comes to watching thousands of boxes of Cheerios all hit the ground at the same time – harmonious, even. Much better than Oasis, still.”
Blue nodded understandably when Frank said he wouldn’t last in prison. “I’m not sure, orange is a good color for you, and if anyone couple make a jumpsuit work, it would be you.” Blue said this very sincerely. “But still, not worth it for Jerry. And we all know if you’re going to jail, Duncan is going too.” She tucked her hair behind her ears as she beamed down at him.
Blue found herself erupting into a fit of laughter again at Frank’s comment. “Oasis is... interesting. But I don’t really like hearing music made by a man that goes by ‘Bonehead’. I’ll try and record the cereal next time for you. They come back every so often. One time they tried getting my phone number. I respectfully declined.”
Glancing around the store, Blue’s eyes landed on the section of new music they added near the counter. “Have you found anything new that you like?” Blue’s view on music wasn’t very complicated. She either liked it, or didn’t. Her knowledge never reached anything compared to Frank’s, but he seemed to love it and she loved listening to him talk about it.
Blue was so innocent and cute that it was sometimes easy getting involved with the things she said, no matter how far-fetched they were. Of course creating a law after someone with their picture on the telly was incredibly silly to consider but, with Blue, it was easy to play in that imaginative world. Pippa always had to be strong and focused, both mentally and physically with the way she was raised. With Blue, it allowed her to act a little goofy and Pippa was grateful for that, to allow her the chance to play innocent too. So Pippa playfully widened her eyes, shaking her head at the blonde beside her. “Tell me about it, eh? Couldn’t imagine having to look good every day ‘cuz everyone is looking at you.”
What she said next caused Pippa to laugh, the skin around her eyes crinkled into thin lines, her lips pursed up in a grin. “You know, I think it would work too. Maybe if we ever get caught by them, we’ll use you on the front lines. You may be the only one to get us out of trouble.”
When Blue had first met Pippa, she had always been afraid that she wouldn’t like her. It was just that Pippa was so put together and had seemed much more mature at the time that she wasn’t sure if they could get along. Thankfully, Blue had been wrong, but she still admired the traits that Pippa had that she first picked up on. Pippa didn’t belittle Blue like people had in the past, and she was grateful for that.
Blue smiled slowly as Pippa explained. “I think we’d all be safer if you were in the front lines. I’d be back up, you know, just in case. Really, I feel our best bet is just to keep Frank and Duncan out of sight.” Blue happily explained the rest of the hypothetical situation. It wasn’t that she didn’t like those two friends of hers, but even Blue could tell they might only stir up more trouble. Hypothetical trouble
Nella found herself unable to help smiling at Blue. The girl was one of the few genuinely good people Nella knew. Their other friends were lovely and would do anything - or almost anything - for one another, but they still had their selfish moments. Nella, too - maybe Nella most of all. But Blue… Blue was kind and affectionate and open-minded and unabashedly loving. Selfishness was a foreign concept to her. Nella loved her dearly. Ever since she’d met her in their school days, her heart torn by the chant of “Simple Ella”. Nella was not a rescuer - more often than not, she was the one being rescued. That was why her friendship with Blue was so special. They’d been good for one another, or so Nella liked to think. She’d brought Blue out of her shell a little more, and if Blue hadn’t managed to tame her, she had helped inspire her at least.
“I look like Shrek?” Nella asked good-naturedly, raising an eyebrow. She grinned. “In that case, Miss Blue, would you be my Fiona?” She plucked a red wig off one of the shelves and pulled it over Blue’s mane of unruly hair. Snaking a hand around her waist, she tipped her back into a typical romantic kiss position, before pressing her lips to her friend’s cheek and nuzzling her with her nose affectionately.
It was hard for Blue to be anything but feel at home around Nella. She always felt she owed a lot of who she was to Nella. Before her, she hadn’t had anything close to a group of friends like the ones she has now. Nella’s bright personality reflected nicely off Blue’s softer one and the two girls were good at balancing each other out. It was times like this when the two were out and doing silly things that she loved most.
“It’s not that you look--” but Blue’s explanation was cut off as Nella threw a bright red wig onto her head and dipped her. She couldn’t help but burst into a fit of giggles at her friend’s antics. “I feel like our fairy tale is less like Shrek and more like that lesbian vampire novel, Carmilla.” Blue rattled off casually. She had only really read half of it at best.
Blue caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror with her wig still half on her head. “You know, I think I should go for this color. Or would Riley think I’m copying her?”
“I am a bit grumpy, aren’t i? Sorry, mate – just not the biggest fan of coming in here after Jerry. He invites all his friends in, and I end up cleaning up after his mess; but, admittedly, that’s what I do, too. Guess karma is a bitch, huh?”
Letting the grin easily take over his features, he continued sorting – he didn’t like admitting it, but he slightly adored Blue. Constantly musing on with equally snarky people, it was nice when Blue came around – she was everything good about the world, and she was genuine in a way that he could only ever imagine to be. It let him be casual, in a way – it was slightly addicting.
“We remodeled after that, so I think you knocking everything over helped, actually? And, I found one of my lost shoes under the shelving, so it was a pretty decent experience for me. I’m still trying to replace some of the albums that broke, but they’re all shitty, anyways – the world could do better with a few less Oasis vinyls.”
Blue’s nose scrunched up at the mention of the repeat customer Jerry. She had seen him and his friends a few times and they were no picnic. Nothing scared her more than a group of teenage boys. “Not that bloke again. He and his friends creep me out.” She walked over the Frank and put a comforting hand on his shoulder. “If I were here I would have glared at them disapprovingly. They probably just fancy you.” She ended the last sentence with a fit of laughter
Blue loved being around Frank. Her favorite memory of the gang was when he joined it. She had always loved how talking to him was so easy and fun. With blue’s type of personality, most people didn’t make talking to her “easy” or “fun”, but Frank managed.
She hoisted herself up to sit on the counter and looked around the store. “Well then, I’m glad everything worked out for the better. I can’t say the same when two boys knocked over our cereal isle at the grocery shop two days ago. It just ended with my manger chasing them down into the lot outside. It was actually quite exciting.”
Pippa didn’t mind the quiet, not at all. There was something peaceful about a comfortable silence when others were around. Hands shoved in her pockets, Pippa walked beside Blue down the alley, towards the pub for a drink. It was an early afternoon with fuck all to do and Pippa and Blue had agreed a drink could do them some good. Mile End lacked fun or, at least, what their version of fun was.
Pippa grinned when Blue repeatedly knocked into her, though Pippa was pretty used to it by now. If Blue had her phone in her hand, she was sure to walk into something or someone she was not supposed to. Pippa was fairly certain she saved Blue from a telephone pole once or maybe even twice. Upon hearing her question, Pippa threw her arm around the younger blonde, smirking down at her. “No. But when it comes to you, they may have to make a new law.”
Blue giggled at Pippa’s comment and glanced up at her. She always enjoyed hanging out with the older girl as she would always look out for her. “I can’t have a new law attatched to my name. There would be pictures of me up on the telly and then I’d have to brush my hair every day. I don’t think I could live that way.” In most occasions this comment would have been sarcastic, but Blue was never very good at nuanced language so her comment was at least half sincere.
“Besides,” she continued. if I was ever confronted by the police, I’d just cry and they’d let me go. That’s the plan, at least.”
He wasn’t even supposed to work today. While he wasn’t exactly complaining, the sentiment was there – money was money, but was money really worth missing his weekly installment of his favorite reality show? Yes, probably, but he still held the right to be the tiniest bit peeved – placing his arrangement of discs with more fever than actually needed.
“–You know, helping would be pretty damn encouraged. I’d even go as far to get you a ‘good citizen’ badge, and everything. You can patch it onto your jacket, and I’ll pretend you’re not a total dick for the afternoon. It’s truly a win for you, mate – once in a lifetime, and all.”
Blue had wandered into Frank’s shop that afternoon as she did every once in a while. She actually had a habit of bothering most of her friends at their workplaces. it was something their employers were less than enthusiastic about, but she never caused any real trouble so they had no means to kick her out.
“You’re a bit grumpy today, Frank. Did you accidentally put salt in your coffee? I do that a lot.” Blue told her friend as he lamented to her. She idly flipped through the music in front of her that she knew nothing about. “I don’t have a ‘good citizen’ badge, but I do have this button with a smiley face on it pinned to my bag.” Blue shrugged off the bag from her shoulder to show her friend the button. She had a collection of them there. “I didn’t think you’d want me to help out here, not after last time when I knocked over half the store”
Nella was someone not at all ashamed to frequent op shops. She knew that it was possible to find awesome statement pieces amongst the endless mountains of clothing people had discarded or donated. She was just pulling a bright green faux fur coat out of a bargain bin of assorted clothes when she heard a familiar voice and lifted her head to greet its owner with a smile. She pulled the coat on quickly and thrust her arms out in a “ta-da!” motion. “What d’you think?” she asked in her usual breathless sing-song voice. She always sounded slightly ethereal, but nobody could tell whether it was natural or whether she put it on. In that instance, as in most, Nella proved to be a bit of an enigma.
It wasn’t uncommon for Nella and Blue to frequent op shops. Blue had been letting Nella practically dress her since they met. It wasn’t that she wanted to copy Nella or anything, she just found that Nella had a knack for finding the type of odd outfits that Blue loved to wear. Her gaze drifted to the green coat now in Nella had putting out of the bin. Blue tilted her head to the side while examining it. “Looks a bit like that big cartoon monster. What’s he called? Shane? No... Shrek!” A smile erupted on Blue’s face as she returned to look at Nella.
Blue was predictably bad at multi-tasking. She just couldn't seem to be able to handle concentrating on one thing while passively doing another. That didn't mean she didn't try to multi-task, because she did. So that's why when she attempted to walk in tandem with her friends while typing on her phone, she would bump into them constantly like a confused magnet. "Sorry... again," she mumbled for the third time as she accidentally bumped into them with her shoulder. She put her phone down for a moment and pondered out loud, "It walking and texting legal?"
“Been working like a dog, I turned all my dreams off, I didn’t know my name, I didn’t know my name. I got a little big longer, I got a ways to go… Even when I can’t see my rear view, even if I call just to hear you, even when I sleep all day…” ♫
Age: 18 Gender: Female Birthplace: Mile End, East London Occupation: Checkout Chick Faceclaim: Juno Temple
Blue grew up in Mile End with both her parents and a younger brother. Her family life is not particularly notable - her parents both worked hard to support their children and Blue was quite lucky to have a normal childhood, unlike some of her friends. At school, she was known for being quite dizty, earning the nickname Simple Ella. It wasn’t until high school when she became a part of the gang that she managed to shake the nickname, when Nella christened her “Blue” (using the first two letters of each of her names) because she deemed their names too similar that it would confuse people. Ever since that day, and to Blue’s relief, that’s all she’s ever been known as, leaving Simple Ella behind forever. Even her parents barely call her Ella anymore. Blue shone as part of the gang, finally coming out of her shell a bit and cherishing the friendships she’s made.
As part of the gang, Blue has the tendency to be a bit of a pacifist. She would never instigate drama, and hates to be in the middle of it, especially if she feels more loyal to one person than the other. For the most part, she’s managed to escape a lot of the drama and just be the fun, loving person that she truly is. She loves her friends dearly, and still finds it hard to believe her luck that she found so many people who love her for who she is. Blue would never have a bad thought about anybody, and sometimes fails to understand how people can be cruel or mean. In this regard, she can be quite naive, lending herself easily to being taken advantage of unless one of the gang step in and keep her out of trouble.
Since leaving school, Blue has continued on with her job on the checkouts at the local supermarket. She’s applied for a few different jobs but always manages to botch the interviews. Unlike some of her friends, she’s quite content with where she is at the moment, and is quite happy to go with the flow and see where life takes her. Often she has grand dreams that stay as just that - dreams.
Blue is a warm, friendly and incredibly affectionate person. She loves her friends dearly and would do absolutely anything for them if they asked. She still has the tendency to be quite quiet occasionally, stemming from when she was teased during her earlier school days, but she opens up around the gang.
Blue isn’t very clever, and knows it - she can usually be quite ditzy, though she can occasionally surprise her friends with some of her more obscure knowledge. Blue is also the most innocent of her friends, often misunderstanding innuendos when it comes to sex and drugs. Her friends love her for her loveable cluelessness though, as she rarely causes any drama or tension and is an easy person to be around.
Nella Cooper: Blue has been close to Nella, especially as it was Nella that brought her into the fold. The two frequently bond, share clothes and occasionally hang out away from the rest of the group for ‘girl time’. Nella’s mother loves Blue and thinks she’s a good influence on her daughter, not knowing that Nella has actually been getting the impressionable Blue into trouble for as long as they’ve been friends.
Julian Murphy: Julian is the nicest person that Blue has ever met and she is so happy that she is friends with someone like him. Julian has approached her and he’s vented to her about the way he feels being looked over at times in the group. Although she doesn’t mind her position in the group, she could understand where he was coming from.
Robbie Singh: Blue has always found Robbie attractive, although she is wary due to Nella and Robbie’s past. He’s sweet with her and she likes the leadership he has over the group. He doesn’t treat her like a child like many of the others do and she feels more confident around him.
Philippa “Pippa” Ash: It’s nice having someone who looks out for the group as a whole, ready to take care of someone who needs it. The group can get really messy and while Pippa still gets as wild as the others, she manages to sober up quickly and take the reigns. Anytime Blue gets a little too drunk or messy, it’s always Pippa who comes to her rescue and she loves her for that.
Max Cartwright: Blue appreciates that Max seems to always look out for her but it can sometimes be a little too much. She knows Max isn’t doing it for any other reason but because he’s kind but she sometimes feels more like a child than a friend to him. She knows she’s smarter than she sometimes appears and wants to prove that to him.
Duncan Fletcher: Duncan always seems to be laughing at Blue and she isn’t sure if he’s being mean or not. She likes him, finds his energy to be exciting, but his constant teasing aggravates her and she lets him know of that. He usually makes up for it, hugging her and making her laugh, but she just wishes he would take her more seriously.
Frank Perkins: Blue is so grateful for Frank, as he often comes to her aid when Duncan or someone is teasing her. Blue finds him hilarious and loves the time she spends with him. He’s supportive and doesn’t treat her different just because she can be a little ditzy.
Olivia Odell: It can be tough having to be in the middle of a battle, especially when you’re close with both parties. Olivia is a spitfire and she enjoys the crazy parties that Olivia drags her to. Still, Blue doesn’t know much about Olivia and she could sense that there’s a wall up. Blue’s alliance is with Nella but she still wants to be friends with Olivia too.
Elizabeth “Riley” Wyatt: Blue may be ditzy but she knows that Riley really doesn’t like her. She’s not sure but she’s also not that interested in knowing why, especially because the girl is known for getting into trouble. Riley is outwardly mean to her but every now and again, Riley says something to Blue that makes Blue feel small and childish. She decides keeping her distance and her mouth shut is the best option.
Callum “Cal” Wyatt: Although Blue doesn’t mind that she’s an underdog in the group, there’s moments where she’s sick of the teasing. Callum is someone, like Julian, that understands her position and she appreciates their vent sessions of sorts. Callum is kind and open and it’s nice to have someone to talk to every now and again.
Tully Fleming: Tully has taught Blue a lot as Blue has never met anyone like Tully before. Blue is intrigued by Tully and enjoys the conversations they have about life and social issues. Blue is intrigued by Tully’s writing, always asking to see some of their writing.
The role of Ella “Blue” Buchanan is currently CLOSED.
