Duncan slowed the trolley to a stop and picked up the yellow lined notepad that laid on top. He cleared his throat sternly and read through the list. “Right, so we’ve got beer. Clearly.” He took a step away from the trolley to survey the multiple cases of beer stacked on top of each other. “Then we’ve got liquor and things to prepare mixed drinks if someone fills like playing bartender. I just sort of pulled things from the shelves by that point so we may have to double check on that.” He flipped to the next page in the notepad, even though it was blank and the first only had two lines filled. “We know how much I love ginger snaps when I’m drunk so I put those in.” A pause. “I think…that’s it on my end. Is there anything else we’re missing? Or something you need while we’re here?”

Riley was perched precariously on the edge of the trolley, feet resting on one of the many boxes of beer in the cart. The cold metal dug into her bare thighs as she sat, sucking thoughtfully on a lolly. She looked up at Duncan as he spoke, nodding slowly. 

"Yeah, I wanted a few things," she said in answer to his questions, sticking out her tongue and tapping the lolly gently against it. "Whipped cream, some sorta chocolate body paint, obviously a few boxes of condoms... Do you reckon they do those fluffy handcuffs here?" She continued, eyes flashing as she spoke. "Wait... Hold on. You were talking about what I wanted for our crazy night of passion, weren't you?”

“Right, were ya actually plannin’ on sayin’ anythin’, or are ya just gonna stand there like a fuckin’ lemon? Cause we’ve only been here a minute and it feels like it’s been a bloody decade.” Riley raised an eyebrow at the person beside her, before taking a drag on her cigarette and blowing the smoke up into the night sky. She sighed deeply and slid down the cold brick wall, coming to a sudden stop on her arse on the damp pavement of the alley. The silence hung between the two of them, neither knowing quite what to say in the situation. Riley sighed again and rested her head on her knees, her voice muffled when she finally caved. “God… I’m so tired.” The last bit came quietly as she raised her head once more, her eyes unfocused. She rubbed them roughly with her jacket sleeve before taking another pull on her cigarette and sighing once more.

It wasn’t a big fight, no, but enough of one to annoy most of the gang. Olivia and Nella kept peace most of the time but, every now and again, their bickering could really fucking annoy the rest of them. At a party, it made it worse and completely changed the dynamic of the gang. Taking a step outside of the party for a smoke, she hadn’t really realized that nobody was coming outside with her besides Riley.

Her heart stopped for a second, even though she had known the girl for a long time now. She didn’t know why but Riley was always making her so damn nervous. If it had been anyone else, Pippa would have joked about the lemon comment. “Lemons can’t stand, you tit.’ – Pippa would have said but she just couldn’t.

She crouched down beside Riley, her own fingers fumbling as she held a cigarette in her hand, her other hand searching relentlessly for a lighter. “Fuck. Can I borrow your lighter?” She glanced at Riley, noticing the way her head was rested against her knees. She was so beautiful, Pippa didn’t know why she was so god damn nervous around her. “We could go home. Leave the rest of them to sort of Liv and Nella.”

Blue was predictably bad at multi-tasking. She just couldn’t seem to be able to handle concentrating on one thing while passively doing another. That didn’t mean she didn’t try to multi-task, because she did. So that’s why when she attempted to walk in tandem with her friends while typing on her phone, she would bump into them constantly like a confused magnet. “Sorry… again,” she mumbled for the third time as she accidentally bumped into them with her shoulder. She put her phone down for a moment and pondered out loud, “It walking and texting legal?”

Riley fought back the urge to turn around and punch the small blonde in the face as she, once again, felt the familiar bump against her shoulder. She really did like Blue, of course she did - but it was fair to say even bloody Gandhi would be irritated by this point. She took a number of deep breaths, teeth clenched together, and fought very hard against her natural instinct. A bright and breezy false smile plastered on her face, Riley turned around. “Hm, it probably should be? You’ll be covered in bruises if ya carry on,” she chirped. It wasn’t until the words hung between them that she realised she may have inadvertently threatened the young girl with an underlying ‘and those bruises will more than likely be from either one of my fists’, but she let it go. Surely that’d be enough to make her put the bloody phone down.

Blowing his air out slowly, Julian glanced over at Riley with a guarded stare. They rarely found themselves alone for extended periods of time, usually having others from the group there to lighten up the awkwardness silences. Unfortunately for both of them, it was just the pair waiting at the tube stop. If only Julian had tried a little harder to hurry. “I don’t have anythin’ to say, it’s 2 in the mornin’,” He answered finally, listening to the thunk her body made on the pavement. Julian stayed standing, shoulders supported by the wall, though he did glance down at her. He, too, was tired. He, too, wished the tube would hurry up. “Take a nap then. I’ll wake you up when it’s here.”

Riley scoffed. “Yeah, that’s what I meant... I’m too tired to wait for the tube,” she muttered, frowning. The cigarette sat limply between her cold fingers, and she looked at it with disgust, wondering why she’d ever taken up the habit. Still, she thought, it was a godsend in times likes these... She took another drag on it and blew the smoke skywards before facing Julian once more. He was hard bloody work. “How was your night, hm?” She attempted to smile, but didn’t have the energy to produce much more than a sneer. Good enough, she thought.

Olivia raised an incredulous brow, looking caught between apologetic and disgusted. “You’re not going to cry, are you?” she rolled her eyes, turning back towards the thin alley, trailing her fingers across the worn brick building to her right. “Look, I didn’t even mean it like that. Don’t be so…” Her voice trailed off, fading into nonexistence as her lips curled up into a wide, beaming grin. “There it is! Come on, now. We’ve come all this way,” Liv began to tug, dragging the both of them into a literal hole in the wall. The collapsed building wasn’t exactly the most scenic point in Mile End, but then again, Liv never sought out beauty. This was adventure, and there was no turning back now. “Watch your head, eh?”

Riley stuck her middle finger up in answer to the jest and flashed a sarcastic smile. As the pair stood in front of the gaping hole in the side of the wall, their point of entry, she tucked her hair behind her ears and pushed the sleeves of her denim jacket up past her elbows. She couldn't, if she was completely honest with herself, remember which of them had pitched this idea or why, but she was always up for an adventure with Olivia and would relish every second of it. "Now," she said, eyebrows raised in mock concern. "If, at any point, you feel like ya wanna leave... Tough fuckin’ luck." Riley smiled that same sarcastic smile once more and turned to face the makeshift doorway. “Are we goin’ in or what?”

Elizabeth never knew her parents, having been given up just a few days after she was born, alongside her twin brother, Callum. They stayed in an orphanage for years until they were placed in a foster family with five other children. They grew up rough, not wishing for much because they knew they wouldn’t be able to have it anyway. The siblings tended to seclude themselves from the rest, hiding off to spend time with one another without anyone bothering them. Elizabeth and Callum were attached at the hip, acting as if they would get separated if they didn’t stay close enough to each other. As close as the twins were, they were incredibly different from one another. Elizabeth had become more wild, enjoying the dangerous aspects of life while Callum shied away from it. Elizabeth liked spontaneity, often doing things simply for the thrill of it, without thought of the repercussions. It was a habit often pointed out to her by her own brother but Elizabeth had no wish to change it about herself. She didn’t try very hard in school and didn’t have many outstanding hobbies or talents that she dedicated her time to. Instead, as she grew older, her need for thrill only got worse and she began to commit petty crimes around her town. She started by stealing candy from the corner store, only moving on the bigger things as she grew. By the time she was fifteen, she was learning how to break into cars and shops.

Her own fear and her brother’s curiosity is what brought Elizabeth and Callum to Mile End. For years Callum wished to seek out his birth parents, to find out exactly who they were and why they gave them up. Callum had such a yearning for answers that after years of Elizabeth shrugging him off and avoiding the topic, she realized there was no use. The biggest issue was that Elizabeth had absolutely no interest in finding her birth parents – actually, she hated the thought of finding them and wanted no part in it. Her feeling was that her parents gave her up for a reason and she didn’t want to be rejected, yet again. She felt the rejection would hurt too much the second time. She had decided long ago that Callum was her family and that was all that mattered to her. She devised a plan instead and lied to her brother about finding out information on their birth parents, notifying them that they were dead and had lived in Mile End. Callum insisted they go there, knowing it’d be the closest thing he’d get to knowing them.

Since then, the twins have decided to stay. Elizabeth, surprisingly, doesn’t mind it much and Callum is obsessed with knowing where they had lived before they died and she felt letting him stay to feel close to them was the least she could do. Elizabeth, hating the name her parents left her with, took any excuse to change it and picked Riley, something significantly less girly and an idea that would help them evade the authorities so they wouldn’t be sent back to their foster family. Now that they are old enough, Callum once asked her if she was going to change it back, but she dismissed the idea. She’s Riley now, for better or worse. The two of them live in a small apartment together.

With Callum bringing up the topic of their real parents, Elizabeth realized just how insecure she was about it. She had tried to never think of them much, knowing there was no use daydreaming about a family that could have been. She knows there is no fairytale ending, although she doesn’t dare rub Callum’s face in it. She adores her brother, sometimes even latches on to his dreamy and picturesque way of looking at the world. He was optimism and she, well, wasn’t. She doesn’t dare burst his bubble, especially on a sensitive topic such as this, and so she keeps quiet and swallows the bitter taste that this issue has in her mouth.

Aside from her hidden insecurity over her identity, she does feel confident in the way she approaches life. She is a bulldozer, driving straight through fears and doubts and straight into anything that excites her. She wishes to seek out adventure, never caring to plan anything too far in advance. She lives in the moment and enjoys the uncertainty life brings her. Her friends believe her to be careless and impulsive and Elizabeth knows they are right. Even so, it still doesn’t mean she’ll listen and they often have to keep an eye on the girl just to make sure she doesn’t end up hurting herself, or worse.  

Callum Wyatt: Her younger brother by two minutes is the greatest gift she could have ever received. He is her best friend and confidante and they do mostly everything together. Riley’s worst fear is Callum finding out that the story of their parents is a lie and she will do anything to keep him from ever finding out. She can be tough with him but she does it out of love but also to protect him.

Nella Cooper: Nella thinks Riley is “totally cool” and Riley likes her a lot too, occasionally to the chagrin of Olivia, who can have some problems with jealousy. They often disagree on things, but Riley finds it refreshing and likes to hang out with Nella when the opportunity arises. Riley has taught Nella the art of shoplifting small things like makeup and jewellery. 

Julian Murphy: There’s no denying that Julian is a nice bloke. There’s also no denying that Julian isn’t the most fun person in their group and since Riley silently appointed herself the most fun, the two don’t have much in common. They are friends because of the gang but they haven’t spent all that much time alone together. They are respectful of one another but they just never had their own ‘bonding moment’, so to speak.

Robbie Singh: He’s edgy and brooding, having his own style away from the group and Riley respects that. While some members of the gang are wary of her careless behavior, Robbie doesn’t seem to mind it much and although he’s matured the last few years, she knew he used to be quite adventurous as well. Robbie and Riley met through Callum, as her brother and Robbie work at the same pub. She sometimes goes there to visit them, always taking a seat at the bar to hang out with Robbie.

Ella “Blue” Buchanan: Riley feels like she has to be sweet with Blue just because everyone loves her so much. The issue is – Riley isn’t a fan of the ditzy act and sometimes she feels the urge to shake Blue until she gets it together. Don’t get her wrong, she likes the young blonde, but she can sometimes get annoyed at how clueless she is. Blue’s most redeeming quality is that she is up for mostly anything and, so, Riley tries her hardest to keep her mouth shut when she feels the urge to critique the girl.

Max Cartwright: Riley has grown closer to Max because Max and her brother have grown so close. Max sometimes goes over their apartment to hang out, the three rolling a few spliffs and playing cards or laying about the house. It’s surprisingly natural and she doesn’t feel like she has to try so hard in front of Max. They can simply sit back and relax, knowing there isn’t so much pressure to appear ‘cool’ in front of the other.

Philippa “Pippa” Ash: Riley doesn’t understand Pippa at all, feeling as though the girl has some sort of issue with her. It wasn’t until a few months later that she began to notice the girl staring a little too long before she began to wonder if it wasn’t anger she was feeling but something else. Was Pippa checking her out? There’s tension between the two, mostly because Riley doesn’t know what is up with the brunette, but she’s curious to see where it’ll go, especially as Pippa is so close with both her brother and Max.

Duncan Fletcher: Riley jokes that Duncan is the bane of her existence, only because he flirts with her so much. It’s so obvious to anyone with a pair of eyes just how badly Duncan wants to sleep with her. Riley has decided to play a game with him – sometimes flirting with him back to tease him and then running off to leave him high and dry. She isn’t against sleeping with him, per se, but if she is going to, there’s gotta be some chase first.

Frank Perkins: Frank is all over the place and if you look away too long, he might actually disappear. Riley likes the excitement and energy that Frank brings to the gang and she feels Frank has brought even more spirit since he arrived. The two are sometimes seen at parties acting like complete tossers, even faking their identities in order to have some fun. Their stupid charades usually end up in disaster but they prefer it that way.

Olivia Odell: Olivia is the closest friend that Riley has here and she loves how passionate and outgoing Olivia is. The two often bounce off each other, revving one another up, especially before a big night out. They love to scheme and plan events for the group, although they are often turned down by everyone for being too crazy, but the girls’ couldn’t care less and always seek out fun.

Tully Fleming: Tully and Riley got along fairly quickly when they met. Riley found Tully interesting and anyone could see how attractive Tully is. Riley knows that Tully probably isn’t all that confident sometimes and is often the one telling them just how hot they are. Riley has gotten Tully to go on some wild adventures with her and while they were hesitant at first, Riley is ecstatic at how into it Tully has become.
