foggy city
“I came to a point where I needed solitude and just stop the machine of thinking and enjoying what they call living, I just wanted to lie in the grass and look at the clouds.”
— Jack Kerouac
Kerouac and Me (at 17)
I was all jazzed up on Jack Kerouac novels and optimism. I'd sit in the diner, drinking mug after mug of coffee while waiting for my friends to get out of school. I had quit in my senior year while they held on and worked with what they were given. I was attacked daily/nightly with anxiety and fear. Fear of looking stupid. Anxious over everything but mostly afraid of looking like I didn't know what I was doing. I felt like a fool to be laughed at. Everyday.
So, I sat in my booth near the back of the joint. Close to the bathrooms. Back then you could smoke freely inside and so I puffed like the dragon and read the prose.
Kerouac got a gig doing forest fire watching in the summers. He was all alone. Not even a cat! His only contact with other humans was through a CB radio. He had streams, a greens and moss to enjoy. Never saw a bear. I wanted that job. I mean, what could be better for a kid who is scared of everything that could speak to me.
At night, I'd fantasize about being in his cabin. Drinking a fine wine and not missing a soul. I was 17 but I already wanted to quit playing the game. I could never play by a set of norms. I was too weird.
To be up there...in Northern California with my only job being looking out the windows with binoculars and checking for smoke and fires. Divine.
I shared this dream with only a single soul as I knew he could kind of relate. He didn't laugh at me. In fact, he thought it would be the finest job I could get. I appreciated that.
Sitting at that diner and reading the book was as close as I ever came to actually doing it. I was always good at disappointing myself.
go ahead modern day Kerouac
Butterflies starve
Funny how one person can change your life. But I guess many people do. It's just the ones you don't expect that last the longest. The letters in my bag and on my phone. I wonder when I'll read it again, but I've got most of it memorized. I took 15mg of melatonin and I want to play guitar. I want to know that I'm chosen. That the butterflies are good and won't starve. Most of all I wish it never happened. I wish I still didn't know I had feelings. I wish everything was easier. I wish people were nicer.
Leaving
It's late. I sleep at my parent's house tonight and leave tomorrow. It's cold out, feels like 10 degrees. From the bathroom I hear the wind chimes next door. And I think- this is temporary. This is all so temporary. Let me not hate. Let me love as much as my heart provides. I don't want to say goodbye to my mother. I don't want to say goodbye.

Trieste cafe at 5:15 pm. The sky has depleted itself of rain but the clouds linger still. A tepid San Franciscan day. I ran out of bed at 12:15 this morning to catch the bus to the Warf for their farmer's market. Got there at closing to buy a croissant and a pint of orange juice. Rain sprinkled here and there and I walked down to Trieste Cafe. A picture of Jack Kerouac caught my eye along the way. I entered a bookshop/museum and asked the man at the counter for a recommendation straight away. There began a long discussion on Kerouac and modern folk and all of the sorts. I bought two records and a photograph he found quite interesting but did not recall. I made my way to Trieste and found a folk band playing. I ran off to get cash nearby and returned to find the band singing a final thank you. Shame. The seats filled, I asked a lady in her late 80's, early 90's, if I may take a seat at her table. She responded with a smile and once I returned from ordering a cup, she pointed at my book and asked "Have you seen him?" Seen who, Jack Kerouac? Was this a bit or was she confused. I replied that I have not and asked her if she had to which she told me she did and he was lovely and I must go to so and so place if I ever get the chance. I told her I would. I wish I knew what it was! She talked softly but with a pleasant, joyous tone you only find when one is satisfied. She said his life lives on or something to that extent and I was beside myself. She was a ballerina who escaped Germany during WWII. Though she may be recalling a different person from another time, I am pleased to meet this memory. Nothing but love and nostalgia in this woman's heart. Will I ever meet someone who has witnessed Kerouac speak? Live in San Francisco. I wonder where he sat and what amused him of this city when he wrote. I talked with a much younger man about music and travels and the Pacific Crest trail and he recommended I travel while I can. Oh, I will. I have and I will. Nothing more do I want in this moment than to set out in a used truck driving from one coast to the other and loop back around. I want to talk to every old folk I meet and listen to their stories and sleep in the fields I pass. A fantasy, but I'll make it happen in a modern way. Times change but the spirit does not and we all want some free will and uncertainty and true, true joy. The joy you find at the end of your life listening to a song play in your head as you tap your fingers to the beat and smile a deep, loved, smile at the first stranger you see.
They dont tell you
They dont tell you that part of traveling is eating alone in restaurants. They dont tell you that not everyone is a friend, not everyone is kind, not every place is home. They dont tell you that when you leave to search for something, sometimes you dont find it. You are warned of thieves and rapists, not the depression, loneliness, and ache.
20
Today I booked a plane to Denmark got high and masturbated twice. Im 20. And this is what life is. Not bad, not bad at all It felt good, nice. But I want more. My heart to be satisfied. It always aches for the love of my past and future. In bed, for the first time I want to be naked. I smoked in the woods of my childhood park. I lost my lighter. Though I stole it from the last person to hurt my heart. Weird. I'm thinking of her and every person who made me feel. We all just want to feel alive. But too much is scary. Be scared. God just be scared for one fucking time in your life and give in. Because you'll do it over and over again until you realize it was that- it was in that fear that you'd really be happy and it terrified you more than anything to have something good. We're both scared. But I'm giving in. Will I ever find you there
