Starting Your Book of Shadows or Grimoire

Hey witches! Having a Book of Shadows or grimoire is a big step into becoming a practicing witch so I thought I’d give you guys a helpful guide to making one!

What’s a Grimoire/Book of Shadows?

Simply, a grimoire/Book of Shadows is a book that contains important information on moon phases, deities, spell making, divination, etc. It is usually written by the owner of the book throughout their journey into becoming a witch.

What’s the Difference Between a Grimoire and a Book of Shadows?

A grimoire contains basic information on many different topics such as spell making and divination.

A Book of Shadows contains basic information on different topics and journal entries or more personal information such as your deities, tarot readings you’ve done, magickal recipes you’ve made, etc.

How to Start a Grimoire or BoS:

1. Figure out if a grimoire or BoS is better for you.

Both of these have pros and cons. With grimoires, some can just be bought that have basic information on magick and have more space to add more information. With store bought ones though, it can be hard to decorate or customize them exactly the way you like. You can start a grimoire from scratch, but you would only put more general information in it.

A BoS would have a lot more specific information and really can’t be store bought as a BoS reflects your journey into becoming a witch. You wouldn’t be as limited to only putting general information.

2. Figure out where to place your information.

Figuring out what should be your grimoire or BoS can be a bit tough. Most you’ll probably see are very fancy journals that are decorated but you don’t have to be fancy! Some people prefer to use a marble notebook or a binder because it’s more discrete. Others prefer using a digital notes app or google docs because it’s very easy to carry around. You choose whatever suits you best.

3. Start taking notes on the topics you like.

You may want to take notes on a separate paper before placing it in your grimoire or BoS. Once you have all your notes, you can choose whether to decorate your notes or not. Some people prefer to have a more practical way writing notes in their BoS or grimoire and some prefer to decorate them by drawing or using whatever they have.
