Prompt Examples + Explanations
I’ve had people ask for prompt examples in past events I’ve hosted and this event is open to any language, so here you go! These are the quick brainstorming notes I took while narrowing down my giant list, now expanded with links & definitions. These are only some of maaaany interpretations—go wild!
Your host is a fic-writer with ADHD, so…you’ve been warned.
🎃 Day 1:
Pumpkin Spice: Cozy Autumn vibes. Putting up Halloween decorations, carving Jack-o-lanterns, coffee / tea shop, pumpkin patch, scented candles, baking, Autumn sangria, sweaters and beanies and flannels, momijigari (Autumn Hanami 🌸, basically) / admiring gorgeous fall foliage, fresh hot apple cider in an orchard. Itoshi Bros and their love of turtle/mock-neck sweaters. Pumpkin Farmer Aiku and Karasu scarecrow!
Graveyard: life, love, and loss; death, saying goodbye, finality. But people, creatures, etc. buried in graveyards don’t necessarily stay dead and buried during Halloween (ghosts, zombies, the undead, vampires, etc)! 👻 If you wanna go the personal horror / psychological route, the death of a dream / future (Saeeeee / the Itoshi Bros, …current recent manga happenings I won’t spoil). Crow Karasu in the graveyard, maybe the harbinger of death / Grim Reaper. Zombie Lorenzooo. Bllk version of that graveyard meme / standing over the graves of your enemies 😭
🎃 Day 2:
Festival: Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, is on this day! String lights illuminating festival stalls, costumes, traditional attire (Aryu looking stylish!), food and drink, games, Isagi devouring fried fair food. Fall music festival. Mid-Autumn Festival (with all the pretty lanterns and mooncakes 🥮), Harvest / Fall Fests in general. Bobbing for apples, caramel / candy apples, carnival rides and games, Ferris wheel, corn maze. Oktoberfest; Kaiser and Ness or any Bastard München player in Lederhosen—please, I’m begging!! Fun house / haunted house. Day of the Dead festivities.
Written in the Stars: The Orionid meteor shower peaks this night! ☄️ The idiom “written in the stars” means that something has been decided by an otherworldly force / being(s) (gods in the starry heavens?). Fate (with or without red strings), destiny, fortune, future; curses; forces—good or bad—beyond our control setting things in motion. Trying to change or rewrite fate. Defying the circumstances of one’s birth. Luck, prophecy. Love at first sight! Astrology, tarot.
Nighttime, stargazing, all things celestial, wishing on a shooting star; there is a new moon on the 21st so dark sky and great for viewing the meteor shower; don’t let a new moon hold you back from whatever lunar stuff you want, werewolves. Autumn camping trip. Planetary Hotline.
🎃 Day 3:
Prey: predator and prey, hunter and hunted; vampires, werewolves, zombies, demonic possession, etc.; taking someone out in a not-huntery or physical way, like devouring someone on the football pitch. Dexter AU! Playing Manhunt, laser tag, paintball! Merman Merman Kurona!
Pray: angels and demons, evil spirit purging / exorcism, shamans, priests, churches / temples, ceremonies. SHIDOOOOU, Gagamaru, Igaguri! Praying to make it through the night! 😱
Is a priest demon hunting, or is a demon going after a priest? 😈 Enemies to…?
🎃 Day 4:
Sugar Rush: the “rush”/“high” or energy you get from eating a bunch of sugar! Trick-or-Treating, candy corn, so much candy, caramel corn; being sweet, a different sort of rush; …“give me some sugar”
Free Prompt: anything Halloween- or Autumn-related that isn't covered by the prompt list! The perfect time to use any prompts from 2023 or 2024!
🎃 Day 5:
Freakshow: Monsters, circuses, Bluelockers—oh my! Because all Bluelockers are freaks, man 😭 Frankenstein’s Monster Bunny. Bachira’s monster. Whatever the heck Licky Rin has going on. Feeling like a freak / sideshow, feeling like you don’t belong. Maybe finding belonging within a “freakshow.” Freakshow is on Friday, so Freaky Friday: bodyswap! …Mature Freaky themes are 💯 welcome as long as you follow the event guidelines.
Eras: future, past, time travel! Doctor Who. Samurai / ninja (Eita?), ancient attire / occupations from all over the globe. Ancient times or not so ancient, maybe just 80s costumes like Ghost Busters! Or an excuse to draw your faves in 90s / 2000s fits. Whatever Swifty "Eras Tour" flair you want or any concert / musician / music themes—why not? Jurassic Park AU, Shidou and his beloved velociraptors ♥️
🎃 Day 6:
Potions: perfume / scents, drinks on a night out, truth potions, love potions (within the event guidelines), magic, chemistry and chemical reactions, Harry Potter AU, Mad Scientist, baking and cooking. Borrowing a hoodie to keep the Autumn wind at bay and smelling that familiar scent…
Chill(s): Thank you, anon! Chills or chill. Bonus points if goosebumps also make an appearance. Fear…or excitement. Netflix and chill. Sweater weather, a chill in the night with the changing seasons. Even the slightest touch (from the right or wrong…entity?) can be enough to raise goosebumps and chills. breaking out the kotatsu for the first time after that first cold snap, sick fic with someone needing some soup and comfort
🎃 Day 7:
Test of Courage: Thank you, anon! Facing your fears, being afraid but doing it anyway. Being a hero. Or being afraid and failing to do something anyway, maybe failing to even try. Maybe working up the courage to ask someone out (to the university’s Halloween festival perhapssss? You can combine prompts!), to ride the rollercoaster or go into the haunted house, to go into the dark forest to find the friend who got themselves lost, to look over the edge of the mountaintop. Standing up for yourself, against something wrong, etc.. A game of Truth or Dare gone awry.
Game Over: video games / video game AU, Nagi and Hioriiiii, board games, game night, card games, costume poker night, Jumanji, Dungeons and Dragons. Getting sucked into / trapped in a videogame verse / isekai situation. Streamer AU with someone livestreaming their first playthrough of a horror game. Or go darker with it: death, the end, finality, apocalyptic. And the end of the event 👻
