i’ll update this as i find more fundraising initiatives and please free to share your own. reblogs with anything than sharing resources/mutual aid requests/fundraising opportunities get blocked.
Playing Tears of the Kingdom and thinking about my friend who was confused when our mutual pal said it was easier to find shrines at night since they glow. Friend was confused because he puts Link to bed every evening at 9pm and has him rest til morning, regardless of where he is or what he is doing.
Sometimes (lots of times) (all the time), I have the urge to do a thing but i dont know what. Or, I feel weird, but can't figure out why or what to do to fix it. ADHD, executive dysfunction, how I feel, and the phase of the moon can all make it really hard for me to think of a solution to the issue -- or even know what the issue IS. And while meds and regular sleep certainly help, for better or for worse my brain just isn't wired for this.
So, I decided to outsource my brain.
I couldn't find an app that did what I wanted or was customizable enough for me to fake it. Therefore I built an analog external brain to do my thinking for me.
First, I bought a small, 100-or-so page notebook. It was about eight bucks at my Local Corporate Book Retailer.
Then, I logicked out all the possibilities I might have trouble braining, and started adding each step to the book -- kind of like a choose-your-own-adventure novel.
Here's an example path, which starts with me knowing what I want, and the analog brain telling me how to get there. I twisted my ankle a couple weeks ago and keep forgetting to do things to make it better, so here's my solution:
[image: Do you know what you want? Yes -> 1, No -> 32. Yes is circled]
Yes, analog brain, I know what I want! Let me flip to page 1.
[Image of Page 1: What do you want to do? Exercise -> 2 is circled. Other options include Read -> 13, Watch something -> 20, Eat ->31, Be creative -> 25, Have an adventure ->26, Clean something ->28, Learn something->29.]
Still know what I want, so I flip to page 2.
[Image page 2: What kind of exercise do you want to do? PT -> 5 is circled. Other options include Weights -> 3, Cardio -> 4, Yoga -> 9, Something quick -> 10, Hiking -> 11, Adventure -> 12]
Skipping some pages now! Since this is meant to bounce me around, it doesn't make sense to try and read it in order. (On the plus side, that makes it super easy to add new options to any part of the tree).
[Image page 5: What kind of PT? Ankle ->6 is circled. Other options include Knee->6a, Neck->7, Shoulders->8.]
(When I first numbered the pages, 6 and 6a werw stuck together, whoooops)
[Image page 6: A list of ankle PT exercises]
Eyyyyy my external brain showed me how to do my flippin' PT so my ankle stops hurting! Yay!
But what about when I don't know wtf is wrong or wtf I want? There's an app analog brain for that! (Yes I'm aware its called a decision tree or process flow or what have you. Let me have this).
[Image: Do you know what you want? No->32 is circled]
No, spacebook, idfk what's wrong, I can't brain today.
[Image page 32: How are you feeling? In pain ->33 is circled. Other options include Overstimulated->37, Understimulated, Panicky->43.]
(As you can see, I have plans to add a page for overstimulated but have not done it yet.)
Oh yeah my ankle kinda hurts, maybe I can do something about that...
[Image of page 33: What kind of pain? Knee/ankle/neck/etc ->35 is circled. Other options include Menstrual nonsense->34, Head->38.]
[Image of page 35: Joint/old injury pain: Take advil, Ice or heat, Massage, Foam roll, Warm bath, PT exercises. Under the last option are subsets Ankle->6 (circled), Neck->6a, Knees->7.]
...Aaaand now I'm back around to my list of ankle PT exercises! And I didnt have to think at all!
Anyway -- all it takes to make something like this for yourself is a notebook and some time to think the logic through. You can start by making lists (not in the notebook) of questions you have trouble braining in the moment, and what some solutions are. Then number your pages, and get started!
WOW ok so i guess people like this idea, ok ok ok ok cool cool cool cool.
Since I know how hard it is to Think Up Stuff (oh how I know), for anyone who wants to give this a shot, here are some additional pages from my analog brain:
The main thing is to think about your own personal needs, and don't be afraid to break it down into specifics!
As you can see, I have a lot of problems with pain, especially head pain. So instead of creating one solutions page for If Headache, I determine what kind of headache I'm dealing with, and then create a unique solutions page for each one.
Yes, there will be some overlap -- "take advil" is pretty much always going to be on there -- but having separate pages for sinus headache vs tension migraine means i don't have to THINK about which one I have. I just go to the correct page and do what it tells me.
Think about your own needs, particularly where you get mentally tripped up or stalled on your way to Doing A Thing. And think about your goals, too! I want to start reading some of the ten million books I already own, so I made a bunch of different pages listing my books by genre. I pick a page based on what I'm in the mood for, and then instead of looking at my OVERWHELMING OVERSTUFFED BOOKCASE OF DESTINY and nope-ing out, I look at a list of 10 or so titles and say, "Ah yes, Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean sounds perfect!"
So anyway. This is still a work in progress, but eventually I want to add some color coding, as well as attach some labeled tabs for frequent-use pages so I can skip straight to them when needed (like the panic attack treatment page, for instance).

Can you tell me why Frodo is so important in lotr? Why can't someone else, anyone else, carry the ring to mordor?
but someone else could.
that’s the whole point of frodo—there is nothing special about him, he’s a hobbit, he’s short and likes stories, smokes pipeweed and makes mischief, he’s a young man like other young men, except for the singularly important fact that he is the one who volunteers. there is this terrible thing that must be done, the magnitude of which no one fully understands and can never understand before it is done, but frodo says me and frodo says I will.
(when boromir is thinking of how he can use the ring to defend gondor, when aragorn is thinking of how it brought down proud isildur, when elrond is holding council and gandalf is thinking of how twisted he would become, if he ever dared—)
but then there’s frodo, who desires nothing except what he has already left behind him, and says, I will take the Ring.
it is an offer made out of absolute innocence, utter sincerity. It is made without knowing what it will make of him—and frodo loses everything to the ring, he loses peace and himself and the shire, he loses the ability to be in the world. It’s cruel, the ring is cruel, it searches out every weakness you have and feeds on it, drinks you dry and fills you with its poison instead, the ring is so cruel.
and frodo picks it up willingly. for no other reason except that it has to be done.
(the ring warps boromir into a hopeless grasping dead thing, the power of the palantir turns denethor into an old man, jealous and suspicious, it bends even saruman, once the proudest of the istari, into a mechanised warlord, sitting in his fortress and bent over his perverse creations—all the best of intentions, laid waste)
but there’s a reason gollum exists in the narrative, which is to show—well, to show what frodo might have been. because even as frodo grows mistrustful and wearied, as the burden of this ring grows heavier and heavier, he is never gollum. he is gentle to gollum. he is afraid—god frodo is so afraid for 2/3 of these books he is so tired and afraid, but he keeps moving, he walks though it would pull him into the ground, because he asked for this, he said he would.
someone else could have carried the ring to mordor, I suppose. the idea of a martyr is not dependent on the particular flesh and blood person dying for some greater purpose. but such a thing has to be chosen, lifted onto your shoulders for the right reason, the truest reasons, and followed into the dark, though it would see you burnt through and bled out.
I will take the Ring, though I do not know the way.
y'know say what you want about tumblr (and I have), but this is still probably the simplest and most powerful distillation of the heart of the Lord of the Rings I’ve ever read. I think back to it all the time

I'm gonna keep asking it: if the law is supposed to be the same regardless of gender, what is legal gender needed for if not treating people different based on their gender?
ooh rebloging for that last comment, so on point ily thank you

[grabs your shirt] listen. listen to me. the practical is holy. the everyday is sacred. the simple act of surviving is divine. do you get it? sanctity begins at home, in the hands that build and the lives we live and the deaths we die and the worms that eat our bodies. if making something by hand is not worthy of veneration then nothing is.

for real!
…you can’t “call someone out” for beliefs they no longer hold. that is called digging up irrelevant dirt as an excuse to harass and ostracize someone. i can think of literally nothing more transparently malicious
if people can’t change their beliefs, are we all meant to just fucking die the second we make a wrong decision? it’s stupid and unsubstainable
