It will always be you with a fondness that burns.
But I like that it burns, you see? I like how we bring out the best and brightest in each other. I like how we can smile and laugh and love and know that this is forever. I like you. I love you. You know this.
Sometimes I think we lose sight of this. You’re scared, I’m scared, walls up, defense on. I yell and you stand in the doorway with your arms crossed. We stand strong, stubborn, unmovable, untouchable. We fall asleep with our backs turned. Burning out. I’m always scared you’re burnt out. You ask if it will always be “like this” and I wonder if your flame will swallow me whole and scorch, scorn, scar.
But still, we fight on. It’s not easy, it’s never been easy. But god, it’s absolutely worth it when you come home to me and curl up with your head in my lap after a long day. You wash my hair in the shower when I’m too sad to do it myself. I can breathe when you’re here. Comfortable, soft, better than anything, beautiful. So we fight on. And on. And on.
Sometimes I think this love is half a battle. And it’s not easy, but, my god, is it real.

I can’t say loving you was easy. I can’t say it was easy like it’s easy to miss the sun during the winter and it wasn’t easy like loving the way the way leaves turn color in the fall. Loving you was hard – but nothing, nothing, could compare to losing you. When you left my life it felt like you branded every inch of my heart with a different memory and then blew it to pieces. It felt like I had pieces of my obliterated heart just floating through my blood stream, and randomly - for no reason at all- some memory would make its way to my head and play behind my eyes like a movie screen. I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to make it stop. Those unscheduled movie showings made my day when you left. Every single day. The worst part - the absolute worst part of it all, though, was that if you had told me you wanted me back - if you had decided that suddenly my love was enough? Well. I would’ve dropped to my knees and stuck tape between my teeth and pieced every inch of my heart back together for you. I would’ve shoved my heart back into your arms and asked with tears in my eyes- God, please, please, make it better. I couldn’t bear to live my life through a movie that I didn’t know how to play the part for anymore.
