Promotional Illustration
I have chosen to photograph a small restaurant called Rose Girlz. It is based in Three Rivers, Vereeniging. It’s a small coffee shop that offers clients the space for them to hire for corporate functions or any function not too big. The space itself is in an upmarket and clean space. My reason for choosing this place was because of the setting in the place, it is placed on the ground floor of a two story building, which also has a spa and salon. The mood created by the setting is one that is calm and more corporate.
Since this is a Promotional/Editorial illustration, what I shoot must be as real as possible, meaning I can’t over edit what I have shot, so I’d have to get the best image in camera before even touching the edit. I have to keep this as simple and pleasant so that a new client gets the right feel and idea of the place when they view the images of the place. As this is an editorial, the images must be shot vertically as that is the standard for shooting editorials. I had to plan firstly how I am going to approach the shoot, this would be determined by how big the space is, the colors indoors and the overall aesthetics of the place. The place has a lot of pink in its décor and I have to display that well in the imagery. It’s a calm space, which can be used for small events such as office parties or corporate events, I have to display all of this space in a way that would speak to a potential client.
In this project I made use of a Nikon D750, tripod, reflector and 24mm Samyang Lens. The shooting had to be done during the day as they only open until 4pm. There is plenty of lighting inside which is what I have used mostly. The images I shot took on a 2:3 frame ration, in a vertical frame as per the standard editorial shoots done in magazines and online. I tried using as low an ISO as possible so that I retain image quality and don’t have a lot to do in post-production. I used ISO 800 for all my images, as I was able to capture the necessary light. I used a 24mm focal length lens as it helped me achieve the required outcomes for the space I was shooting in. The depth of field would vary, for the detail shots I used a lower f-stop so that I increase the client area of focus and used a higher f-stop to reveal the entire space.
The post-production is always better when the initial images are taken with as much correct detail, meaning the exposure, color temperature, ISO and frame is appropriate. Below I will show you the original image and also the screen grab of the editing done:
In all the images place above, original image will be above and the edited one below. Luckily I didn’t have to do a lot of editing as the shot were appropriate from when they were originally shot. All I have to do was increase the exposure just a bit and tone down the highlights because of the lights inside the venue.
What I have learnt from all this is that editorials can be very tricky to shoot. The manager had initially agreed to me shooting at the place on the first day and totally had no problem with it. After pitching the idea to my lecturer, she liked the place and approved me shooting there. When I went back to shoot they were okay with me doing so and I took about an hour with the assistance of a friend to do so. With my lecturer correcting me and asking I got back to re-shoot, I called the manager and informed him of this and he didn’t sound too keen on me doing so. On the day I went to shoot he was not there and his employees said I couldn’t shoot as the manager would need to give the word. I had to use the images that I had captured the first time as the manager started not being as welcoming as he was initially. Biggest lesson, get as much shot on the first day as you never know what might happen when you go back to re-shoot.

A business venture
A videography and photography service can be a very lucrative business venture, as there aren’t many people doing it with quality and just the right price. Most professionals’ services are out of the noble man’s budget.
Modelling a business that can be both quality work and priced just right for a certain market can actually make one a lot of money. If you work is that good, word of mouth will spread it like wild fire and in no time, you will be getting the big gigs also, this is when you can “bump up” the price and charge like other pro’s. The one thing many businesses miss is the human element, this is getting a client satisfied and them feeling like they are well catered for. This will make a difference between a client coming back for more or them looking elsewhere for your services.
Adding more services to your business will make it a cut above the rest. To my business I would add other media services such as graphic design and web development, which I can outsource for and “employ” more people in. Whomever that I would employ would also promote the business to their people, this means more business for me.
