Light peaks through curtain holes and hits his face directly. It makes his long lashes seem almost transparent as his eyes rapidly open and close to stay awake. Little wrinkles appear when he lazily squints at his partner beside him. The heaviness of his breath reveals that he is still sound asleep. Engulfed by the sun his skin becomes like a golden nectar, almost drinkable to someone with a mouth as parched as his. Lying there on his side, one arm squashed underneath the weight of his body, he might as well be a hallucination. An oasis in the depth of a desert. Nothing if not a fickle hope. To suckle the sweetness off of him comes with the promise of a bitter aftertaste that is hard to swallow. I better not, says he, but nothing can truly drive him away. Not even the force of his own will.
The light means that he should have already gone. They belong only to the night as the day despises them. He has never seen so much of him as he does now. Sheets have been discarded during the night and lay curled and damp between them. They are both all skin. Vulnerable. When he moves closer his body becomes a shield to his. He protects him all the while his body casts a dark shadow over him. With every care he presses a kiss between his eyes. He holds his breath half expecting him to crumble and turn to dust without the sun.
โWake up.โ
The two words are directed to himself as much as they are directed at Eskel. It barely makes a sound, but he wants him to wake and see him there. Any word from him would break the illusion. He is desperate for it. He is afraid that he is the one still asleep and all he can do is savour the dream a few moments longer. His finger runs smoothly along the scar on his face and he whispers again: โWake up.โ
