They confiscated rice crops causing a famine in Manila. They cut off cloth shipments to the country and left citizens without enough cotton to make clothes for themselves. They forced themselves on our women and slapped, embarrassed our people for not bowing in their presence. Their propaganda videos claimed they would give our country independence three years before the Americans yet oppressed us, controlling the press; making it a capital offence to listen to foreign broadcasts, and curtailing religion, beating and torturing those who not only disobeyed, but suspected. I should know, my grandfather was killed in plain sight in front of my mother and her family's home. I found these "Japanese Pesos" which was the official currency of the Philippines during war times under Japan leadership, at a local antique market. I showed them to my Dad and it brought back memories for him. He held his tongue at first when I asked for a reaction. After a few minutes he looked at it closely. Examining both sides. "Play money", he said as he walked away. I haven't seen a look of disdain from his face in a while but he seemed genuinely upset at the mere sight of the bill. I can only imagine living in war times. Today marked the 70 year anniversary of Japan's surrender during World War II. In 1995, during the 50th anniversary of its surrender, then Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama apologized for Japan's wartime behaviour to its Asian neighbours. Today, Emperor Akihito did the same. "History can never be covered up. History remains alive through its witnesses' vivid testimony" noted South Korean President Park Geun-Hye. The one thing the Japanese tried to instill in the Filipino people is a sense of national pride and identity. Lest I forget ever who I am at the end of the day. We're all constantly growing and getting older day by day, and lately I've had a clearer perspective of where I am, who I'd want to become and where I'd like to go.
