I’m Back

Bobby walked down the halls for the first time in what felt like years. The school looked exactly the same, but he knew it was different, everything had changed since he had left, even himself.

Leaving was the second hardest thing Bobby could have ever done. But, the hardest would have been staying. He new something was wrong. he had felt himself cooling down for months and it started effecting his relationships with other people and even his own mind. He felt himself distancing from everyone, becoming as cold on the inside as he was on the outside, and he didn’t want that to happen. Bobby had packed up his things and left, without telling a soul. It seemed right at the time, but now he was going to have to explain himself to everyone he had left behind. He knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but Bobby wouldn’t have come back if he didn’t think it was possible.

Thinking about all the traveling he had done since he left, took him away from where his was in the hall. He was back on the mountains, and the freezing air whipped past his cheeks. He was so lost in his memories that he didn’t even realize that his feet had taken him far from where he was suppose to be headed. Snapping back into reality, Bobby scanned the area until he spotted someone. Taking a deep breathe, he approached them.

“I don’t suppose you can lead me to my room? I seem to have forgotten how to navigate this place after all.”

The doctors had recommended fresh air so Skye was out in the courtyard working on her laptop. She looked up when someone spoke. She scanned the stranger quickly before nodding, “Sure. Professor housing or the boys’ dorm?”

Looking at the girl, her face lit up from her computer, Bobby noticed her expression was more hidden than most people he encountered. Then again, he was back at Shield. Everyone had secrets here. He accepted her as a kind person even though he couldn't really tell. "Boys' Dorm" he responded, looking around convinced he would recognize something sooner or later. He readjusted his bag to his other shoulder and held out his hand. "Bobby."

Wandering into strangers rooms was providing ample entertainment, enough for the itch in his wings not to be overwhelming. As with most things however, Warren’s attention was wearing thin and the desire to jump out of the nearest window was building. There wasn’t much to be said for Iowa. New York had been his home, his blood, the energy of the city that never sleeps thrummed inside him, and the need for that same frenetic pace was not something sleepy Iowa could satiate or contain. One thing that could be said for Iowa however, and that was the sky. Fresh, clear, open skies, free from smog, noise or light pollution, or worse, prying eyes. Just the sight of it was intoxicating.

He was trying to figure out the window latch when someone interrupted his train of thought. Not a moment’s hesitation before he replied with a confident, “Of course! You alright? You seem nervous. First day?”.

Looking up at the figure emerging from the shadows, Bobby almost didn't recognize his old friend. He held an unfamiliar look, at least unfamiliar for him, but Bobby knew that expression all too well. He seemed like he wanted escape.

“Warren!? What are you doing here? What are you doing to that window?”

Bobby noted how he was trying to undo the latch. it all but confirmed how He thought warren felt. He really did want to escape. Bobby had half a mind to join him.

“This isn't my first day. I’m just back from.....” Bobby paused. he didn't have to lie to someone who he didn't abandon. He did it anyway. “Vacation, an extended vacation.”

“No Scott you don’t understand. Hank has no idea. Like none. Despite how smart that guy is he has no clue how I feel about him.” Bobby was becoming a bit sad. He had never said anything about Hank to anyone. Saying how he felt out loud, it made Bobby feel like a fool.

“I know Hank loves me. He treats me like family and he would never hurt me. But to me, Hank is everything. I never spoke about him because truthfully, coming here was my chance to forget about him. at least for a little while. I always become so lost in him when we are together and I decided a long time ago that if I wanted our friendship to survive, it would have to be from a safe distance. So I left.” Bobby took a breath of relief after saying so much.

Scott fell to silence. He had never seen Bobby like this. His friend usually so energetic, and uncontainably happy now was down. Really sad. It was a delicate moment, one Scott was really really unequipped to deal with.

“Buddy…” he said trailing off in a tone he hoped sounded sympathetic. Abandoning his desk, he sat on the coffee table facing his friend, hands clasped uselessly on his knees. He decided to give Bobby a pat on the shoulder. God, what would Hank do. “Do you want some tea? I’m.. going to make some tea.” he declared.

After some faffing around in the kitchen, Scott handed Bobby a warm mug. He sat on the coffee table again, watching his friend intently. “I hate to point out the obvious but, have you tried telling him?”.

Bobby noticed that the spot he was sitting was frozen solid. He quickly got up and tried to stop from freezing anything else. He was pacing back and forth in front of Scott. It took Bobby a couple seconds to realize what was going on. He was having a panic attack.His mind was racing and every spot he stepped in immediately froze. That's Bobby notice that his legs were turning in to solid ice. Even more panicked, he began muttering "No, no, no, No, NO" trying to stop himself but it was too late. There was a big flash and Bobby's entire body transformed into ice. When Scott walked in with the hot tea, Bobby just looked at him with a sarcastic tone. "No, I'm chill" and then because he was over his panic attack, and now was just completely done with what had just occured. Bobby began to laugh.

Bobby started to calm down a bit but not by much. “We met in Chicago two years ago” Bobby’s recollection of the day they met was still fresh in 2his mind. Shaking his head Bobby asked “Wait, how do You know him?”

“X-Gene research… years ago.”. Scott paused staring blankly, retracing the past week or so. All the nights when he had the dorm room to himself, all the pings from Bobby’s phone. “You two kept that quiet. I had no idea.”. He scratched his chin absently, still stunned by it all. “I mean wow hank. Did not expect that. I’m happy for you of course.”, then, running out of things to say. ” Congrats? I don’t know, use protection?”.

Bobby, still pretty embarrassed, saw how nervous Hank was and felt like there may be an opening for him there. He scooched a bit closer but not too fast as to alarm Hank “Actually, if it’s alright with you, I wanted to share a blanket like we usually do?” Bobby made sort of puppy dog eyes at Hank. He saw his sweat beading off him and for some reason Bobby was a bit turned on by it. He wanted be as close to Hank as possible, and he wasn’t going to let an Awkward Boner stand in his way.

Hank drops the folded blanket onto his pillow, he’d keep it closer for later on when Bobby started to make him feel cold again; it normally happened. “Uh, sure?” he says, crawling back into bed, this time lifting the covers. He settles onto his back, stowing his puzzles back on the nightstand. He checks his phone for an alarm set for 6am, so he can get to the labs before anyone else, he settles back down. 

“So uh, how’ve you been here? Is it treating you well still?”

Bobby crawled up next to Hank like a puppy looking for his spot on the bed.

He never really became too cold due to his powers, and it never really bothered Bobby anyhow, but Hank didn’t know that. So Bobby, pretending to shiver, had no problem pressing his body slightly onto Hank. They were both laying on their backs, but Bobby knew that Hank would do what he always did. Every time they had slept together, Bobby always woke up with Hank spooning him. He never questioned why, he just assumed they were both so comfortable that it was just a natural thing to do. Bobby always looked forward to it none the less.

“I love it here, I feel so accepted for everything I am here. Being a Mutant and Bisexual and everything else I am, no one cares here. I feel like this is the home I never had with my own family.” Bobby said, answering Hank’s question.

Bobby watched as Hank got comfortable. He appreciated Hank’s dorkiness, it was what drew him in. Bobby always noted the way Hank went about his day and how precise and organized he always was, something Bobby always lacked. “Haha, it’s going to take more than that to kick me out of your bed.” Bobby belly flopped onto the bed, forgetting to even pull on the shorts Hank had handed to him. He was so used to sleeping in his underwear it was second nature for him anyhow. He put his hand on the side of his head to hold it up and stared at Hank with a twing of curiosity.

Hank watches as Bobby jumps into bed, and then he sees it, “Oh my stars and garters,” he mutters, quickly looking back to fill out some of his puzzles. “You going to uh…” he stutters, quickly turning red in the face between looking away. 

“Look you’re uh…. you should put shorts on, Robert, you’re uh…” he isn’t sure about the polite way to say this without coming off as overly medical. “You’re uh…” Yeah, he can’t do this. “You’re engorged, I can see your ‘business’, so to speak. Unless you’d prefer I use the regular vernacular, I think you might prefer if I just don’t.” Hank goes back to his puzzle, trying not to just look back over and stare.

Now he’s starting to debate what might have caused such an event to occur.

Bobby quickly looked down and became wide eyed. He had no idea he even forgotten his shorts much less had become hard. He grabbed whatever blankets he could to cover himself up. "Oh shit, I'm sorry!" Bobby became red in the face. He just sat there quietly not knowing what else to say.

Bobby’s jaw dropped. “Fuck. Wait you know him?” Bobby immediately knew he fucked up and he couldn’t take it back. “Please Scott for the love of god do not tell him. You have to promise me right now, I’m serious.” Bobby was scared and angry at himself for letting out something so important.

Oh god, oh god. Scott waved his hands for Bobby to back off. Or calm down. Even though he was half a room away. Bobby’s panic only confusing him more. “How do you know him? Jesus. You’re in love with Hank. You, and Hank. Together. Huh.”.

As Bobby was being set down he imagined the same scenario but during their fake honeymoon Bobby had created in his head. Bobby was caught completely off guard as Hank began to strip in front of him. As his shirt and pants came off, Bobby couldn’t ignore the stirring in his pants and quickly readjusted himself. Bobby caught the shorts and started taking off his clothes as well, just so he can stand closer to Hank. “What? I don’t know what you mean…” Bobby stared at Hank with hungry eyes knowing exactly what he wanted. He was surprised by his question but as Hank finished his sentence Bobby started to stutter. “OH. HAHA… Iyaaaaa…. It doesn’t matter to me”

Hank flops onto his bed, crossing his legs one over the other, back rested against the headboard. It’s there that he reaches for his reading glasses, a folded up newspaper, and a pen. Just a little something to distract his mind while he tried to wind down for the night, a quick Sudoku puzzle or four.

“I’ve been keen on the window lately, it holds a fantastic view of the trees.” Noting the temperature, hank kicks off his socks by using each foot to remove it from the other. “Do you mind? It’s a little warm in here. Just a few degrees should suffice. Otherwise I’m going to have to sleep nude, and you’ll be forced to take the sofa with Hulk’s dog.”

Bobby smiled as Hank brushed is forehead, he was watching him as he stretched his arm over his head, reveling his abs as his shirt came up. Bobby felt the urge to rip off the rest of Hank’s shirt along with all the other clothing covering his body, but he restrained himself. Bobby but his lip in an effort to control himself. He was disappointed that Hank was already tired but his bravery already had sizzled out so he was fine with going to bed at that point. “Yeah sure, I’m pretty tired” Bobby faked a yawn “We’re still sharing the bed right?”

Hank takes note of the feigned yawn, okay, so something was definitely up. He looks at him more closely this time, watching his eyes when he stretches beneath him. Hank is starting to think he’s going crazy, because he could swear that Bobby’s pupils have become a bit more dilated.

And given the conversation he’d had with Scott earlier….

….No. That wasn’t possible, right?

Regardless, Hank takes his leave then, standing and setting Bobby onto the ground so he can head towards his room. Hank isn’t that ashamed of himself, not around Bobby at least, so the second he opens the door he’s already removing his slacks, reaching into his drawers for a pair of drawstring shorts. In there he finds another pair and tosses them to Bobby, “Left them at my dorm in Chicago last time, you can use them tonight if you want.” Pulling his own pair on, Hank unbuttons his plaid shirt and removes it, leaving only a white tank on to cover his chest. “So what do you want?” he asks, pausing for a moment to give Bobby a moment to trip himself up, so that he might clear up what his mind is thinking. “Door or window side, of the bed, I mean.”

Bobby locks eyes with Hank and for a moment, everything else faded away. He was losing his battle with his emotions again. Slowly, he was starting forget about the boundaries and the fact that him and Hank were only friends. What brought him back was what Hank said next. Hank didn’t believe in love without romance, but would he feel the same if Bobby told him how he felt? Bobby loved Hank, but there was never any romance. There was the typical Bromance, and yes from a third party perspective, it looked like they were already a couple sometimes. But it just was never the same for Bobby, it was never the way he wanted it with Hank. Looking into his eyes, Bobby wanted a change, he wanted something more.

As Hank put his computer away, Bobby shut off TV. It became very dark in the room.

“No. It’s okay, I wasn’t really paying attention anyways.” Bobby said, still looking into Hank’s eyes.

Hank is a little surprised by the move to turn off the television set. While he thought they’d simply enjoy the movie now that Bobby had revealed to enjoying it based on some rather peculiar cinematic merits, the move is rather shocking.

“Tired of the movie?” he asks, removing his glasses and tossing them onto the table. The bridge of his nose was carrying it’s fair share of tension, something a pinch to it for a few seconds helped to relieve. With his hand now free, he props it behind his head, so as to stare down at his younger friend. 

His other comes up, and large fingertips brush over his forehead, pushing through the darkened mess Robert liked to call a hairstyle. “Or just tired?” With a yawn, Hank reveals his own position, sleeping in the lab was never fun. And quite honestly it never yielded a restful slumber. Plus, if he’s being absolutely honest with himself, he always slept better with a partner; and the only person to do that with him ever was Bobby. “It is getting late, did you want to call it a night?”

Bobby was lost as Hank rubbed his hand on Bobby’s back. He was used to reciprocating  favors such as this with other men, but Hank was different. He didn’t seem to respond to touch when he was doing his work, he didn’t seem to respond to much at all.

When Hank asked Bobby about the movie, he left out a laugh and smirked.

“Don’t worry big guy, it’s not what you think. Have you ever heard of Fifty Shades of Grey? it’s like watered down porn. All the good parts are basically cut out anyway. and besides, I actually like the storyline. Two people from two different worlds, intertwined with Lust and Love…” Bobby trailed off when he noticed that he was speaking too much. Just like his powers, his mouth had betrayed him.

“I can turn it off if you want?”

Hank doesn’t seem to notice the tenseness that settles into his best friend’s frame when he begins to move his fingers over his back; nor does he notice when he subconsciously relaxes under the touch. He’s simply too involved in his reading right now, the act consuming his entire set of senses.

“I haven’t heard of that, no,” he says, lifting an eyebrow while quickly finishing his paragraph. Lifting his gaze, his eyes chance with Bobby’s just briefly before flicking over to the television set.

And he regrets that.

He looks right back to Robert now, a slight scowl on his face, “Why would someone make a movie about this?” he asks, confused by it. “Lust and love shouldn’t go hand in hand, one is unhealthy, the other is widely unrealistic without romance. And judging by this, I fail to see the romance.”

He shrugs, “I suppose if you like it we can finish it, let me just set my computer away for now and I’ll see if I might enjoy it at all.”
