Badly Drawn Worm
What do you think of the edgy Wildbow comics reboot from 2011?
Well, isn't that a hell of a question... and honestly after 15 years i have a lot of mixed feelings about it.
For those who don't know, the 'Parahumans' line was the 2011 reboot of Wildbow comics.
It was the result of the 2010/2011 event Valhalla, were Defiant trying to get Dragon back from the dead accidentaly breaks the timeline. Valhalla itself was pretty good, I really liked the dynamic between Collin and the alternate good Jack and i really like message about letting go...
What i didn't like was editorial using it as an excuse to reboot Wildbow comics because Daniel Chambers (From wich Glenn Chambers got his name, they were mocking him) didn't like the post Apollyon Wars status quo (which was 40 years ago btw).
And thats how we got the least fucking organized innitiative ever that was just so fucking edgy...
So, what did i like and what did i not?
Well, i will start with thr obvious, they had no fucking plan, they just went there and did shit and most titles got cancelled within a year.
It was just edge and nostalgia, Chris got regressed from Armsmaster 2 to kid win, they retconned out the third new wave sibling, they fucking killed mouse protector for being too corny etc (and dont let me get started with them using one fucking line of the original new wave #1 to justify Amy's crush).
They gutted the WB magic sphere by making it it's own separate universe under the Otherverse imprint.
They killed Hero because he had morr chemistry with legend than with Alexandria.
And everyone was just such an asshole.
But then you have the good things...
Firstly, you will say they are overdesigned but i really like the Worm looks of some of the characters.
I do apreciate the creative freedom given to the writers.
And i really apreciate that they got John McCree to write the Skitter series. And like, i really think he made it work, it was edgy but it had substance, and it really elevated her from one of the random wards with a redemption arc into a household name (She is in Protectorate nemesis and Wildbow vs Sega 5 for a reason).
So, even after most of the line was cancelled after the Deluge event, Skitter kind of continued, and they kind of gave the entire parahumans setting to John, while Chambers quietly brought the old continuity line with Wildbow Reborn.
You really can feel the shift of parahumans before and after John took over wich leads to the next point. I really like that he kept all the edgyness and assholes, and it's very funny because you can tell he does it on purpose and that he makes it part of the point.
The rebrandin from Skitter to Worm was very good in the long term, with the main flagship skitter book and the glimpses of the wider world.
I specially like that he got a bunch of randoms from the Tales of the Slaughterhouse anthology as the main antagonistic force and how he used the triumvirate's mischaracterization as the basis of the cauldron twist.
So my opinion is, the 2011 reboot got good under McCrae, but when it got good it got really good.
So, you should totally read Worm, it's sequel Ward. And John's indie works Twig and Seek.
Man, i really hope he comes back to WB...
I had to recreate it
Holy fucking shit!
For my turn i summon brown haired, green eyed Taylor in Parian's shop!
Your turn peasant
I counter with Califa de Perro’s mistranslated name and chain into Scrub being a weirdly important character
What is this? Amateur hour?
I use "redeemed" fanon purity who has a bonus of casual racism against Califa de Perro and activate my trap card, Fundamental misunderstanding of how Coil's power works
Nazi Amy, neutralises redeemed purity. You've clearly failed to account for Fundamental misunderstanding of how Coil's power works' weakness: Fundamental misunderstanding of how Tattletale's power works. I follow up with shardspeak who has double damage against all thinkers and use Out of Context power Taylor to protect my Lisa.
What did you think of the first phase of the WCU?
Hmmm, you know what. I'm reviewing it.
First of all Dragon from 2008, the movie that started it all.
I liked:
●Seeing her origin, how newfoundland fell and her sheer sense of powerlessness before triggering.
●The evolution from her first crude suit to a more regined dragon armor.
●I liked RDJ as Collin, i was very happed they picked up his stinger for the sequel.
●Teacher was a pretty good villain, hapoy they didn't kill him off.
What i didn't like:
●Gwynnet Paltrow's character was unnecesary, why would dragon need a secretary???
●It doesn't get how to make you feel stakes when the protag is an IA
●Terrence Howard as Rennick is just there, and how they changed the actor in the next film left a sour taste.
7/10
Then you have Lung: Dragon of Kyushu.
What can i say that hasn't been said yet? I was skeptic for them reimagining Lung as a hero but it just works.
I like how it set up Leviathan as the overarching villain of the phase, i like how it has that runaway vibe with Kenta running from the Yangban.
The CGI of his fight against Seven was pasable, and the post credit scene with Zero planning to hunt him down went nowhere. But idc, it was overall pretty good. 9/10
I would have killed for another Lung movie.
The ugly duckling of Phase 1, Dragon 2.
I honestly liked it more than the first one, Saint and the dragon slayers are an actual threat that works.
Dragons own issues with her nature are explored in a neat way.
I liked the teacher plot twist at the end, that he had been manipulating saint.
And please tell me the scene of Dragon and Armsmaster killing the Dragonslayers didn't fuck.
8/10, fun watch.
Theo my beloved. Golem fucked so much man.
A coming of age story about a young man leaving his nazi family behind.
It kind of gets completely interrumpted by the Slaughterhouse nine tbh.
Like i get you are building up a cinematic universe but having some guy show up, say "i will come back on a couple years and kill everybody and thats on you" and fuck off wasn't terribly great.
But the final fight against Hookwolf as a middlepoint between the nazi family subplot and the slaughterhouse 9 subplot worked.
6/10
I don't like flashback movies in big cinematic universes. Sometimes they feel like they don't mean a thing on the long term because most characters are dead so they won't affect that comes later.
Miss Millitia: the first ward shutted me up.
Hanah is a fucking great protagonist, all of the first wards are great.
I loved her bromance with mouse protector, i cried when she died.
What the fuck is Hugo Weaving playing Allfather????
Overall i feel like this is the best out of the Phase.
10/10
It all came to it. Protectorate from 2012.
Leviathan was pretty built up from Lung and Dragon so it felt like it worked. Jack felt pretty tacked on tbh.
I like how it sets up Scion as this cameo total force of good that can't affect the plot. Wonder what they will do with him.
I didn't like that Collin set a fucking nuke towards new york. I hope there are consecuences for this in the future.
Liked how director Armstrong got to assemble the tram through the movies.
I don't know how to feel about Blue Flechette, apparently her first costume in the comics was like that? Idk.
Scarlett Johansen as Queen aka Emily Piggot from the PRT was cool.
Honestly that what Protectorate is. Cool.
Even if that bastard Jack escaped at the end of the movie.
8/10
Are Oil Rig fanfics popular again?
So, people liked my review of phase 1 of the WCU, so let's review phase 2:
This movie is baffling to me. You bring the CUI, set up Shen yu as the main fucking villain...
AND THEN THE MAIN VILLAIN IS FUCKING VICTOR?!?!?!?!?
What the fuck man.
But at the same one you have Colin becoming Defiant, showing character developement.
But also fuck you, Gwinneth Paltrow was a vague interpretation of fucking Ash Phoenix.
The dragon's teeth are fucking awesome.
But most of the movie is Dragon who crashed bonding with a little girl.
??????
I like that Dragon finally gets a gynoid body, it shows that she is now sure that she is human, even if she is a machine.
But thats the thing with this fucking movie. There are a lot of great fucking ideas weighted down by horrible studio decisions.
Also the new dragon suit is fuckinv over-designed lol.
6/10
I fucking love this movie.
I love Hannah's arc trying to find Mel, and how she discovers she has become murder rat.
I love the plot of Gesselchaft infiltrating the PRT.
This really sold me on Scarlet Johanson as Piggot tbh. Even if i'm iffy on her ship-bait with Hannah.
I liked how Miss Millitia recruits Vista from the Brockton Wards. I think they are great foils of each other.
Just, overall a great movie with great coreography.
But really? Nobody suspected Juntin Nazheer was just a nazi?
9/10
Underrated and Overhated in my opinion.
Yeah, it's kind of a mess with too many plotpoints. Like Jack is there and that goes nowhere, Theo has to balance his new membership to the chicago wards, dealing with his dad and the folk.
Topsy was a forgetable villain but i have high hopes for mockshow.
I liked raymancer, tecton and annex. Hope we see more of them.
Natalie portman as cuff was... a choice.
6/10
Give it a chance man.
Just give James Gunn a group of unknowns and he will give you gold.
What a good fun fucking movie, man.
The crew has such a good dynamic.
I like the implications of a larger thing with the C tattoos.
The whole asylum breakout sequence was very entretaining.
This movie was really really fun. But with a heart. And thats the best a movie can be.
I heard most people tought that Gavel was a forgetable villain (or anti hero) and that him joining forces with Burnscar made no sense. It doesn't make sense but it gives us some great sequences.
I loved the silly cameos of some of the weirder Wildbow characters like the Snail, Chubster and Trainwreck.
ALSO THE MUSIC! I boight the soundtrack as soon as it came out.
Please watch it. It's very fun.
10/10
It starts strong with the raid to the heartbroken, also helps set up Regent and Cherish. Damn those twins are creepy.
I really liked the earlier slice of life esque scenes in the rig.
The whole scene of the three blasphemies emerging and taking over the dragon's teeth to make a machine army was very very well animated.
Why is Colin Armsmaster again? I feel like we get robbed of his character developement... but the Lungbuster armor fucks so much.
Also, Flechette has a secret girlfriend she told nobody about. Lol. But i really like her new purple costume :}
I wonder what all the visions of the future mean. Will the slaughterhouse 9 kill everybody? I mean they have been teasing the shit out of them for years now.
Also we need to talk about how the studio bounces Piggot as a love interest for any other team member, like it feels so out of place man.
The final battle was neat, the fact that they finally reveal Scion as he kills the blasphemy's "BEHEMOTH" was surprising, cool, but it kind of killed al the tension lol.
How can i take anything seriously if thid golden man can appear and end the threat?
Also Regent dies i guess. We hardly knew ya.
Let's see what they will do with Cherish tho.
It's an okay movie.
6/10
And to round this phase up we have a funny heist movie, Assault.
Velocity as an older mentor figure works.
I hope his daughter becomes Battery in the sequel lol.
Assault's crew is funny.
Madcap is a boring villain but the "let's free everyone in the birdcage" was an interesting premise.
Go see it if you have the time.
7/10

I know that the Ward saga and phases 4 and 5 hasn't been as good but some people really overreact smh.
Maybe now that they are getting back the rights of New wave, the Irregulars and the Quadrumvirate it will get better?
Happy pride month
