Pretty bikes all in a row…
KOBH #0002 – Pyrmont
Lone love lock
Sydney has a few of these metallic memes dotted about.
Got a new camera today. (Panasonic GX8) I blew my lens budget ordering a Nokton that won’t arrive for another week or so. So I bought a 15mm body cap lens for 70 bucks. It is terrible but I kind of love it. Here’s a collection of photos I took today treated in lightroom. No cohesion stylistically because I was just playing. I could have spent forever photographing all those bikes though.
KOBH #0014 — Saunders’ Quarry Memorial, Pyrmont
Dante, Michelle Pfeiffer and, Stevie Wonder
Midway upon the journey of our life
I found myself within a forest dark,
For the straightforward pathway had been lost.
Dante Alighieri (1265 - 1321), Inferno Canto I
Mystery solved. In an earlier post (KOBH #004), I wondered about a sandstone block engraved “Purgatory”.
I now have the explanation.
Pyrmont was once a substantial mound of sandstone. It then became three sandstone quarries owned by the Saunders family. They named the quarries “Paradise”, “Purgatory” and “Hell Hole” as per Dante’s Inferno, as explained on the plaque shown.
Further, the monument lists all of the major Sydney state-commissioned buildings that used sandstone quarried hereabouts. I will be using this list as the basis for a series within this Blue Hour project.
If you look closely, to the left of the engraving, someone tried to scratch in “Gangstas”.
Theme song from the Michelle Pffeifer film “Dangerous Minds” was… “Gangsta’s Paradise”. My favourite part of that song is actually a sample from Stevie Wonder’s song “Pastime Paradise”.
Nice.
