my biggest weakness is publishing a fic and then immediately rereading it over and over again for like two or three days straight because suddenly the exact thing ive been wanting is on ao3 and its like the MOST fun little gift to myself

i think this is kind of why ao3 placeholders (beloathed) or polls asking followers if theyd read a fic like XX or honestly just the general atmosphere of, like, writing fic for clout or "content" upsets me so much. i dont necessarily believe all writing should only be about the love of the game but i think specifically within the context of fanfic, it's entirely about that. if you're here for reasons other than the desire to write the story you want to read and put it out into the world, the whole exercise feels so disingenuous to me. fanfic is inherently rooted in creating for the joy of creation. and if you want to use that as a springboard to build community or friendships, i feel like it should be by finding people who are as excited about the thing youre excited about, not by trying to force yourself into one box or another to appeal to other people. we do so, so much of that in our daily lives outside of our hobbies, in work or school or with family whatever. joy is here for a good time, not a long time. why wouldn't you want to embrace it while you can?
