i don’t remember the exact quote, but when ianto realizes he’s only just scratched the surface with jack and he responds by telling ianto that that’s all there is with him, more surface... my heart breaks thinking about how guarded jack’s had to keep his heart, how he’s had to put up walls and create a massive distance between himself and the people he chooses to spend his time around in order to survive, create this charming mask where people think they know him enough to get comfortable with him, but they really don’t have a clue. if someone saw the entirety of jack, they’d run away screaming, because he’s done terrible things throughout his long life, when he couldn’t handle his immortality, or when he was pushed into it by others trying to put a leash around his neck. his is not a happy story. he’s made so many mistakes, and half of them were so long ago, he can no longer remember well enough to apply context. he hates himself so much, that he has to convince himself that there’s nothing left inside, that he’s just an empty shell. the amount of people who’ve died, either because of him or directly at his hand... the guilt eats him alive.

honestly, there’s a difficulty in being on this blog sometimes, because as much as i refuse to use john barrowman as a fc after his behaviour, i also struggle to watch torchwood or his episodes in doctor who as a result, so i’m largely working off of memory when i try to write jack. and that is... fucking difficult ngl. sometimes, i may get things wrong. some of jack’s intricacies may not be spot on. but as far as i’m concerned, the character of captain jack harkness is my own now, to do with as i see fit.

i always forget how jack canonically just. naturally smells good. all the time. like he doesn’t even have to try, he just has the luck of having those evolved, 51st century genes that give him just a little bit more of an edge.
