guess who's back!!!!
thanks to everyone who supported on my backup @casa-supernova !!!!
have fun with this little dumb video i made on doctor who series 3
i love martha jones' voice. she has this really nice, gentle, raspy voice that can go from reassuring to COR BLIMEY FECKING 'ELL in two seconds. a true londoner.
endlessly amused by the way that martha’s mother treats the doctor like he’s some bad boy that has tempted her righteous daughter to sin. and then you look at him and he’s just some white nerd.
anyways, i'm still really annoyed that my master post about how badly race was handled in series 3 is gone, so i'm going to remind you all again. martha jones. black medical student who definitely would have been dealing with medical racism as well as general microaggressions. her family. the biggest in the rtd era and the most underutilised. making francine the angry black woman with little to no build up, making her antagonistic to the point of violence with barely any plot. no mention of the impact a father who ran off with a younger white woman would have.
shakespearean london. 1599. two years after the queen tried to expell black people from the town and ship them off as chattel, making martha's concern worryingly accurate. having the doctor dimiss these concerns making him sound like an idiot. shakespeare's fetishisation of martha. the doctor's unnecessarily aggresive, dismissive and simultaneously suggestive attitude with her. manhattan, 1930. excused away having to deal with the inevitable racism by throwing in a line by a black actor to show the writers didn't feel like dealing with it, despite race relation getting worse during the depression. still keeping at the needlessly suggestive scenes and lines aimed at martha - it is not funny or endearing for the doctor to pick up her knickers. i admit his "busy doing stuff" line with francine WAS funny, but overall, i'm not impressed with the borderline inappropriate innuendos levied at martha her season. right down to john smith asking martha what she 'does' for the doctor. and speaking of 1913. the only two parter to actively treat racism as if it exists...until it decides to reward joan (and john for the matter) with narrative sympathy. then we get 1969, another racially unstable era, especially as it's london. any black brit who was around in that era will tell you. and then the master and his jibes about ticking boxes off in demographics which is definitely supposed to be a jab at actual critique of the show but just makes him seem prejudiced also. which isn't exactly helped by him enslaving the jones', maid outfits and all.
not to mention subverting the first female black companion in the tv show's onscreen history into the doctor's. the first and only time they've done this thank god. to sideline her in her own story and constantly and negatively comparing her to the white predecessor was such a huge and avoidable error. not to mention completely forgetting her in 'the doctor's daughter,' seperating her from everyone for the majority of the s4 finale and pairing her off with the only other black male in the cast.
come on.
oh, i forgot to mention basic things, like lighting and hair and makeup for the black actors. some shots they look greyish because the lighting is clearly to accommodate the white lead although to be honest, the rtd era and lighting have never been friends.
i don't think it's exactly a secret that i really don't like the rose/meta crisis ending.
firstly, we lose donna because of it. but mostly because of the implications. i also view the meta crisis in multiple ways. he's a clone but he isn't. he's not the true doctor but he is. it's complicated.
but let's get into it.
first of all, the reason that he even stays with rose in the first place is because the tenth doctor thinks he's a liability which is kind of dramatic but probably an incredible bit of foresight (he can see the turn of the universe right) and self awareness considering he goes all 'timelord victorious' later. two doctors in the same universe, one who's considerably more volatile than the other would definitely be a problem. i don't think davros reversed so quickly upon seeing him for no reason.
so as a solution, he needs to be with rose so she can keep him in check. because the takeway from her character is that she is a balm for the doctor, which reads less sweet, more patronising to her as an individual. i'm not surprised that story had her refer to him as a pet because that's literally what she's doing now. keeping him on a leash lest he go feral. why they didn't just give us a moment between the meta crisis doctor and rose doing something together to sow the seeds if they wanted the viewers to be sold on this, i don't know. now, i am not dismissing the idea that this ending was supposed to be divisive, but some of the vehement defending of it on here makes me raise an eyebrow.
anyway, my secondary point is the parallel world itself. the tardis dies upon getting there the first time, with the doctor comparing it to diesel in a petrol engine. he also states that after the time war, the worlds were closed off, but before that, travelling was possible but stressed that the tardis drew on energy from it's own universe which is why it didn't work in the parallell. now, we also know from rose's absence in that world, that there is probably a lot of people missing from it or people who never existed in the first place.
so. now i am left with everything the doctor would be leaving behind staying in pete's world. he would never see his own universe again. now, the prospect of exploring an unknown universe would be probably exciting but considering timelords do not exist there, it would be a pretty hostile place for him. maybe inventing his own way to travel would be fun for him. the whole 'grow a tardis' deleted scene was always dumb to me though, because despite how organic the ninth and tenth doctor's tardis looked like, it's still a machine. i don't think you can grow timelord technology. so that's out of the question. he would never see his old companions again. donna? martha? sarah jane? none of them? and, the biggest to me - his tardis? there is no way you can convince me the doctor would accept never seeing his beloved tardis again.
the doctor's reason for living is exploring the universe and travelling in his ship. so for him to give it up to stay with rose in pete's world doesn't seem romantic to me, it feels tragic. while rose may have wanted to settle down eventually, she knew he wouldn't. and he shouldn't have too. they both wanted different things so to make her get this ending that was forced upon him feels really unfair.
the metacrisis was born out of the engine of the dalek ship and donna's fear. and maybe 1 hour later he's exiled from everyone. to live this human life he's been intriguied by but never wanted. we find it in s3 he has a whole machine to make himself human. he. doesn't want. it. but now he hasn't got a choice. and for rose to jump on him right in front of the original doctor was just the cherry on top of a selfish cake which was even crazier considering that even rose was protesting that she didn't want this either.
none of it feels great. i'd much have preferred for rose to have gotten over it and live better for her experience in pete's world. the very idea of her growing colder and more selfish felt realistic though. but i don't think she should have been rewarded for it though.
i'm just not a fan.
Honestly, I think the meta / Rose ending can be boiled down to:
The Doctor looking at his two problems. Lands the TARDIS, guides them to the exit under the pretense of showing something cool. *shove shove*
And we're dematerialising two problems lighter.
....
I wish I could draw, I'm loving the visual I have for what I just tried to describe.
I know this is not accurate but I have the mental image of the Doctor smiling manically at them before leaving going. "Well, here you go kids a whole universe for you two to blow up. Have fun, don't bother me!" *door slams*
But on a more serious note: First of all, let's face it, the Metacrisis was made with the sole purpose of being with Rose. Not in the show, but I'm pretty sure I've read that was the reason RTD came up with him (don't quote me on this.)
The Metacrisis literally was a retcon of Rose's ending, and it's kinda shit. As far as retcons go, I mean. I'll once again state my love for the idea of the Metacrisis *shoves Rose out of the TARDIS while hugging Meta close.*
I don't think it's exactly impossible for them to grow their own TARDIS, though there is the obvious issue of diesel in a petrol engine though you can argue your way around that, but that's not the point. Even if they could grow a TARDIS, that would take years iirc. IDK if you've ever met the Doctor, but staying still for a period longer than, what is it?, 10 minutes, is difficult for him. How well do you think the Metacrisis will fare?
I kinda like the idea of Meta not wanting this, but the Doctor not leaving him a choice so he reluctantly goes with the plan. But really why couldn't he have stayed in the original universe on yk regular Earth, taken up the job of science adviser at UNIT again or something?
Honestly, it would've been much better if the sole reason Rose had ended up in Journey's End was that the stars were going out. No shebang about her creating the dimension cannon so she could come back. Show us she has moved on, tell us she has a family and is married. Or whatever. And then let them have a proper goodbye.
but no instead she shows up literally telling him that she completely ignored his warnings of the whole multiverse being at risk if she tried to come back and he just hugs her in joy.
Though as I hinted earlier I am lowkey thinking of The Doctor dumping Rose and Meta on that beach on the parallel Earth as their punishment but like that requires some heavy reading between the lines.
“he needs you thats very me” yeah um punishment….also literally rose is whole deal was to travel why she comes back in parting of the way and yeah he’s happy someone he loves and cares about is back rose couldnt come back bc of the stars coming back also the doctor often says shit like “impossible” that turn out not to be so rose probably thought he’s wrong and it didnt work till the stars start going out which is when rose realizes she needs to find the doctor and then donna to save the universe
To the two people who reblogged this complaining. I tagged it 'critical' because that's self explanatory. I'm not putting it in the 'anti Rose' tag because I'm not 'anti Rose.' Nor the 'Anti Tentoo' or Meta Crisis whatever. Is it that impossible to critique a storyline on here? Do I need to start using code?
and people are allowed to respond to critique!
lol why would i want a response that is completely biased. you've already made up your mind clearly. there's no discussion here.

Which classic who companion would you be most interested in seeing Martha befriend? I feel like she could have some fascinating conversations with so many of them. Do you see her becoming a member of the companion support group or do you headcanon that she's completely 'over it' at this point? lol
Lol, I'm not sure she'd go to that, but I do think she'd be very interested in meeting previous companions. I think she'd befriend Ace. I think both of them saw quite...interesting sides to the Doctor. Some more than others lol!
Absolutely, i would LOVE to be a fly on the wall for that conversation, lol.
“He used me as a pawn against Fenric!”
“He killed my cousin and lied about it!”
“He blew up a planet!”
“He blew up his own planet!”
“... ok we’re going to need another round of drinks...”
Haha! Yeah I'd thing they'd get along swimmingly!
can i just say, while the chibnall era has made strides, the racial aspects still haven't been great you know. i can think of something dodgy from every series of it, not to mention how yasmin and ryan deserved a much better legacy than what they got. so while i can, and many people, especially now, can see how racially insensitive previous eras have been, i wouldn't hold jodie's era as a golden standard either.
This era literally had the blonde Doctor hand the POC Master over to the Nazis, saying "now they'll see the real you" as she revealed his race to them. After he'd already lost, too. Idk I'd say handing a non-white character over to a white supremacist group is pretty fucking racist.
This is exactly my point.

Though as I hinted earlier I am lowkey thinking of The Doctor dumping Rose and Meta on that beach on the parallel Earth as their punishment but like that requires some heavy reading between the lines.
I mean using it as a punishment kind of works too. I really hate the retconning of Doomsday. I don't even like the pairing but that beach scene is one of the most viscerally devastating things I have ever seen on telly, and it was strong as hell too. So to write over it with the Dimension Cannon, reuniting and with her own Doctor like a fanfiction then ending the series with him stalking her was just so...
KDSAFJKSDASKDASA I fucking forgot about him creepily returning to her at the start of her timeline in the end of time!!!
It was supposed to be sweet but just came off so creepy. When I first watched and realised what he was doing and standing in the shadows like that I was like oh NO. I laughed out loud because SIR. I wonder how many times he's done this. She was only 18 at that point. Call Chris Hanson.
I mean while we're on it, can we unpack the red bike comment too? Like sure him giving her a red bike for Christmas sounds sweet and all but that implies he definitely looked her up in her earlier life.
I mean we literally saw him do that with Clara, though that was given with some context but I'm almost willing to bet he made it a habit long before her.
Probably. But I was only midly joking about the Chris Hanson thing. I think Rose only being a teenager is still odd, but Nine (despite what tumblr says) wasn't as romantically intentioned to Rose I don't think so. At least Christopher didn't think so. He might love her but I think he was right to want to cool it off if he had stayed for another season. When she intially rejecte him there's lots of theories that he flew off for a while then came back. Maybe he came across a younger Rose then? We all know Jack looked over her too. That's odder considering he knew Rose for a considerably less amount of time than the Doctor did.
Yeah that's fair.
Honestly don't see that much of a problem with him going backwards in time like that. Though it's definitely one of those things that's a bit funky if you think about it too much.
Yeah it really is!!!!

In my mind, the Meta said "fuck it, I'm not losing my friends". And decides to stay on Earth and save Donna's mind. He's goes on adventures with Martha and Donna

so as a solution, he needs to be with rose so she can keep him in check. because the takeway from her character is that she is a balm for the doctor, which reads less sweet, more patronising to her as an individual. i'm not surprised that story had her refer to him as a pet because that's literally what she's doing now. keeping him on a leash lest he go feral. why they didn't just give us a moment between the meta crisis doctor and rose doing something together to sow the seeds if they wanted the viewers to be sold on this, i don't know. now, i am not dismissing the idea that this ending was supposed to be divisive, but some of the vehement defending of it on here makes me raise an eyebrow.
anyway, my secondary point is the parallel world itself. the tardis dies upon getting there the first time, with the doctor comparing it to diesel in a petrol engine. he also states that after the time war, the worlds were closed off, but before that, travelling was possible but stressed that the tardis drew on energy from it's own universe which is why it didn't work in the parallell. now, we also know from rose's absence in that world, that there is probably a lot of people missing from it or people who never existed in the first place.
so. now i am left with everything the doctor would be leaving behind staying in pete's world. he would never see his own universe again. now, the prospect of exploring an unknown universe would be probably exciting but considering timelords do not exist there, it would be a pretty hostile place for him. maybe inventing his own way to travel would be fun for him. the whole 'grow a tardis' deleted scene was always dumb to me though, because despite how organic the ninth and tenth doctor's tardis looked like, it's still a machine. i don't think you can grow timelord technology. so that's out of the question. he would never see his old companions again. donna? martha? sarah jane? none of them? and, the biggest to me - his tardis? there is no way you can convince me the doctor would accept never seeing his beloved tardis again.
the doctor's reason for living is exploring the universe and travelling in his ship. so for him to give it up to stay with rose in pete's world doesn't seem romantic to me, it feels tragic. while rose may have wanted to settle down eventually, she knew he wouldn't. and he shouldn't have too. they both wanted different things so to make her get this ending that was forced upon him feels really unfair.
the metacrisis was born out of the engine of the dalek ship and donna's fear. and maybe 1 hour later he's exiled from everyone. to live this human life he's been intriguied by but never wanted. we find it in s3 he has a whole machine to make himself human. he. doesn't want. it. but now he hasn't got a choice. and for rose to jump on him right in front of the original doctor was just the cherry on top of a selfish cake which was even crazier considering that even rose was protesting that she didn't want this either.
none of it feels great. i'd much have preferred for rose to have gotten over it and live better for her experience in pete's world. the very idea of her growing colder and more selfish felt realistic though. but i don't think she should have been rewarded for it though.
i'm just not a fan.
Yeah it really is!!!!
i don't like the meta risis doctor storyline very much, but i do like the reveal when the tardis dematerialises in front of everyone and davros is visibly scared to see another doctor from inside, mainly because in that one moment you can understand that even davros knows the rules but that they've all somehow been broken right then.
i don't think it's exactly a secret that i really don't like the rose/meta crisis ending.
firstly, we lose donna because of it. but mostly because of the implications. i also view the meta crisis in multiple ways. he's a clone but he isn't. he's not the true doctor but he is. it's complicated.
but let's get into it.
first of all, the reason that he even stays with rose in the first place is because the tenth doctor thinks he's a liability which is kind of dramatic but probably an incredible bit of foresight (he can see the turn of the universe right) and self awareness considering he goes all 'timelord victorious' later. two doctors in the same universe, one who's considerably more volatile than the other would definitely be a problem. i don't think davros reversed so quickly upon seeing him for no reason.
