obviously jason collins’ life was far more than just this singular article but for me personally, it was one of the first articles that i read about coming out and it’s still incredibly inspiring to me.

thinking abt the nba's stance on vampire players and how that manifests in tangible ways. cause my current idea is "they do allow vampires to play in the nba but it was only Recently that they established official safety protocols and accommodations around All That". like up until either the late 90s or maybe early 2000s they Technically prohibited vampire players for Safety Reasons but everyone working in the nba (players, coaches, refs, GMs, etc.) knew damn well they were bullshitting and were willing to let them slide if they're good enough at hoops and know how to behave themselves and sweep all those times where they had to feed off some trainer or video coordinator or even an unlucky human teammate under the rug. maybe there was like a push from the nbpa to include these protcols in the cba and the owners eventually decided "ykw fine. have your shit. just promise not to make us lose money over this 😭"
teams have their doctors perform blood transfusions on their vampire players as a safer alternative to the "having someone volunteer to be their juicebox for a few minutes and hoping they don't either die or snitch in the process" method that was the norm back in the day
the blood usually comes from consenting team staff, but sometimes a team would do partnerships with health orgs to host blood drives and while most of the packs are donated, they do get to keep some for their players to feed from
they do it the same way as a regular blood transfusion aka IV into the arm, but sometimes a player can't do that for whatever reason (maybe they're injured in a way that makes it really hard if not impossible to do it properly, maybe they're super afraid of needles, maybe they have personal beliefs surrounding the whole thing, etc.) so instead they just hand over a pack and let the player feed from it, clean up whatever mess they make. tho the anticoagulants mixed into the packs will make them taste like ass when ingested
also there's prob some sort of registration system for vampire players to be eligible for all that + other accommodations + generally keep track of how many of them there are currently in the league. like POV you're trying to apply for the draft or maybe sign a contract with the spurs or whatever and you gotta fill out a form that discloses that you require human blood to survive and you'll do your part to basically avoid PR nightmare #282837793
