Paul Desmond’s mellow tunes here represented his sadness as a man that never successfully made a relationship with woman. That’s clearly showed with the word “loved” on the title. The way Desmond expressed his feeling using cool jazz and simple rhythm section really makes me sank in his own mood. It makes me imagining myself, makes me feel having many similarity with Desmond’s love stories. Then, I find this song already cheer me up.

When Stevie Wonder was 13, he has released three albums. It’s really shown in those all three albums his gentle but explosive voice which has been owned since he was teens. One of favorite album from that era of Stevie Wonder is his third album With A Song In My Heart. In this, he also sing When You Wish Upon A Star. Opened with so gentle voice but suddenly explode expressions. Sounds like you can feel all of his longing expressed here.

If you ask about my favorite jazz version of When You Wish Upon A Star, I will choose a track from Dave Brubeck’s 1957 album, Dave Digs Disney. Just listen to Paul Desmond’s improvisation that wriggling but quiet and Dave Brubeck’s selected tones which is stunning and moving at a same time. They really give me shades of peace as given by hope.

Twenty years after the first version of When You Wish Upon A Star from Cliff Edwards, there is Louis Armstrong rendition published by Buena Vista Records. This version is the first one which is popularized by a jazz star so it opened the way for this song to be played in many jazz form. Although Louis’ band didn’t play jazz so much in this track--without any bluenote scale and too little syncopation rhythm in the band--Louis still give improvisation with his trumpet and sing in swinging style. 

Many people said that Louis was ill when recording this track. Even so, everyone still can listen his verve within his powerful, vigorous, and spirited voice just like in other record from him.

When You Wish Upon A Star is written by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington to be sung by Cliff Edward in Disney’s first version of Pinocchio movie on 1940. In this video, we can listen the first and original version of the song with video clip that taken from the movie. 

There are so many other video clip of 1940 Pinnochio in YouTube but, for unknown reason, I can’t embed it in tumblr :| This one is an awful video clip but it’s the one that can be embedded. So sorry.

It’s have been so long time I have not posted anything since June 2015. From my last post about lifetime theme song, I posted about When You Wish Upon A Star. A perfect description for myself who waiting for a miracle. I feel blue by thinking that I still need that same miracle. A miracle I have been waiting for so long but still have not forthcoming. A miracle for my mournful love story.

With this tumblr-comeback of mine, I still post another When You Wish Upon A Star rendition. But not yet from Armstrong or Brubeck, now it’s a portrayal from Joe Pass. Look at his expression while making improvisation. Can you catch that kind of sad expression?

I have been interested with this sweet rendition for long time since my first year in college. It brings me back my memories. Happy memories about friendship, about loving someone, about passion to study as a colleger. Ah, When You Wish Upon A Star :’)

If I must choose a theme song for my lifetime, I don't have any idea except choosing When You Wish Upon a Star. That song really suits my struggle and contains the solution of my hope: a miracle.

So, this night song of mine is When You Wish Upon a Star. After listen various version from various jazz musicians, I finally found this video of Mormon Tabernacle Choir that was really amazed me.

Well, those are many great jazz version from Louis Armstrong, Joe Pass to Keith Jarrett and Dave Brubeck. But I think this choir version is really assuring :'3

What Kind Of Jazz I Hear In My Various Activity

When I sleep, I hear every jazz music that has lyric. I think it is the best time to get maximal benefits from lyrical music when we take a sleep. Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and many Indonesian jazz singers will be my best choice. 

When I study, I don’t hear so much. Somehow, if I study with music, it would be in a little volume and it must not be lyrical music. I think it won’t be good if I hear any other words except of what I’m thinking. So, lyric-less jazz that soft could be my friend when studying. There are so many jazz musicians provide that kind of music. I have Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau, Lennie Tristano, and many more on my list.

When I take a rest, I will enjoy free jazz. It will be so mind-blowing after thinking so much in my studies and works. I will easily take John Coltrane’s Spiritual album or any Sun Ra’s to fulfill my need.

When I don’t have something to do, I won’t just listen to jazz. I will also watch it. Many jazz concert video will always been available in internet and I will search for the energetic concert to be watched. Kenny Garret’s, Christian McBridge’s, John McLaughin’s, and many fusion jazz band like Heavy Weather, Headhunters, or Mahavishnu Orchestra will be my favorite. I always enjoy watching jazz concert because I can listen the music much deeply by watching the movement of the musicians’ body and their face expressions.

When I work, I also listen to energetic jazz. It makes me so energized to finish what I’ve started. It will make my works finished faster than when I do my job without listen to anything. For the musician, it just a same list with the list when I don’t have anything to do. 

When I together with Miss Kurokoucha, I will always ready with pop-jazz music in our room. Since Miss Kurokoucha don’t like jazz music, she will get cranky if I play songs from Thelonious Monk’s albums or from John Coltrane’s collections. But she will enjoy the works from George Benson, Fourplay, Rasmus Faber, and many jazz-pop musicians from Japan like T Square, Sadao Watanabe, or Kyoto Jazz Masive. Of course my girlfiend’s mood will be my first priority when we are together :3 

When I just browsing and reading any article in internet, I will listen to my most favorite jazz musician, Charles Mingus. I also frequently listen to Duke Ellington and Stan Getz in this such activity.

When I take a time with God, I also listen to jazz. But it must be soft and no lyrical (because I read Bible). Any Christian Religion Jazz album will be great to be listened. In my list, there are Dave Douglas’ Be Still, Kirk Whalum’s Gospel According to Jazz, and Various Artists’ Jazz Worship. And when it is December like now, without considering any activity I do, my music will always been taken from many Christmas album. Everyone knows that music and spirituality have a very tight connection.

Three years ago, Cempedakers recorded a video of them singing "He's Been Good", a song which is composed by David Baroni. The guitarist Andri Marpaung made the music arrangement and he took a duet with Elifati Zendrato on guitar too. The other Cempedakers came to sing and then I took the video. 

This song is talking about God's care for us, His creature. As Christians, we believe that God is always by our side in every moments of our life. Someone gave his comment: "Although the sound is cracked and there's nothing special within the musical, I still feel blessed from this video".

Oh boys, I'm so longing that moment :')

We called ourselves with "Cempedakers", it means that we are live together in a boarding house on Cempedak st. For me, it is more than a boarding house. That place is a place for me to grow up mentally. That place is where I can find a friendship. Those are the reasons why I'm still here in Cempedak.

This is a video which I created as a farewell to our comrades from 4 years ago. They must left this boarding house since the government has called them for work. I think will longing for reunion :')

How I Love Jazz At The First Time

It was October 2011 when I went to Jazz Goes To Campus Festival in University of Indonesia. It's my first time going to a jazz festival and I went to there without any definition about jazz. Honestly, I thought jazz is something like rap :|

In that festival, the first performance I watched was The ExtraLarge. A pop band which use tilt chord (well, it is my own term before I know bluenote). But who made me interested in jazz was Barry Likumahuwa. It was my first time listening improvised music which use bluenote in almost part of it. After that day, I became so curious about jazz music. I began searching Indoneisan jazz musician in internet and started to listen their works. And then I also try listened to so many international jazz musician from Louis Armstrong to Miles Davis.

Before I listened to jazz, I enjoyed rock and pop music. So, my feel on jazz is so influenced by how I feel on pop and rock music. I mean, when I just started listening to jazz, it's better for me to listen at jazz with many similarity with pop rather than listening to non-fusion classical jazz. 

Well, that is how I started my new observation in music. Slowly, in the passage of time, my music sense get a lot of change. I started wonted to listen bebop, swing, and also free jazz in so long duration. Watching jazz concert video is so helping too. Limiting my eyes to just looking at a thing makes me can concentrate my hearing and enjoy the flexibility of jazz.

My music sense was shifted more and more. Jazz made a vision in my mind. It makes me think what great music is. It makes me think how shallow the pop music. Jazz makes me think that creative music is a music that is improvised in melody and rhythmic. 

And finally, here I am. A person who listen to jazz in every situation :)

Indro Hardjodikoro is an Indonesian bassist. He is also a figure who gives big impact to Indonesian jazz scene in this last two decades. He and his band, The Fingers, have released three album and also have performed in Music Town Festival in Russia (2012). 

"Cerita Baru" (New Story) is his newest album released in 2014. This album is a continuation from his previous album in 2010, "Feel Free". From those album, Indro wants to tell us about his story as a musician. Cerita Baru is about his journey in this last four years. The album ranges from ballad to upbeat, but all have its own story and messages. 

This song is taken from Indro's "Cerita Baru" album and tells us a story about long distance relationship. Well, when I listen to this song, I just thinking about a separated couple who is thinking each other while looking at the moon.

I really impressed by a young Indonesian jazz musician from my generation. He is Gerald Situmorang, a productive guitarist who born on 31 May 1989. So far, Gerald has recorded five album with five different music group. His first album, Oddventure (2012), was recorded with Hemiola Quartet, his band group together with Dimas Pradipta (drum), Kevin Yosua (bass) and Gabriella Sava (piano). Then, in this year, he released Time Is The Answer, his latest trio group album with Ankadiov Subran (bass) and Jessiliardus Mates (drums). 

"P & L" is a song from Gerald's latest album. This song is a tribute for Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays. If you ever listened "Leaving Town" or "James" by Pat Metheny, you will recognize that this song is really so influenced by Pat Metheny works.
