The problem’s obvious: if you read fanfiction, webtoons, manga, manhwa, web novels, and original stories across multiple platforms, you noticed that each site uses its own bookmarking system — if any at all.

AO3 offers history and bookmarks, Webtoon uses a library, Wattpad provides shelves, while independent blogs offer no system beyond your browser history. Since these platforms don’t talk to each other, there is no unified way to track reading history or progress across them.

This is the problem Bokbi is here to solve.

Bokbi is a personal reading tracker that brings all your stories into one place:

🌱 Why Manual-First Matters 💚

One of the most common questions about Bokbi is:

“Does it auto-sync chapters or pull story info from places like AO3, Wattpad, or Webtoon?"

The short answer: no because most platforms don’t allow it — and even when they do, it often breaks when the site updates its structure or shuts down an API. Readers would be left with missing data, broken integrations, and a tracker that no longer works!

Bokbi takes a different approach: it’s manual-first by design. That means when you add a story, you choose the title, tags, notes, and details that matter to you. When you update your progress, you’re in control of what gets logged and how!

🌱 What Bokbi Isn't 💚

With Bokbi starting to take shape, we want to be clear about what it isn’t — because it’s just as important as what it is.

❌ Bokbi isn’t a reader. You won’t be opening or streaming stories inside the web app. Instead, Bokbi stores links so you can always return to the source — AO3, Wattpad, MangaDex, Webtoon, Tumblr fics, and more.

❌ Bokbi isn’t a hosting platform. We don’t upload or host stories ourselves. Bokbi is built for tracking, not publishing.

❌ Bokbi doesn’t auto-sync or scrape data. Because most story sites don’t allow open APIs (but actively looking for a workaround), Bokbi is manual-first. That might sound like a limitation, but it means more control: no broken connections, no missing info, no relying on someone else’s system. You decide how your stories are logged, tagged, and updated.

🌱AO3 Alternatives to Read While It’s Down 💚

When Archive of Our Own (AO3) goes into maintenance mode, it feels like half the internet’s library is gone for a while lol. Luckily, readers and writers have always been resourceful — there are plenty of other platforms to explore in the meantime!

At Bokbi, we know how frustrating it can be when your favourite site is unavailable. That’s why Bokbi exists: to give you a unified online reading tracker and library for all your stories across every platform. Whether it’s AO3, Wattpad, or something more niche, you can add links to Bokbi and keep track of your progress in one place!

Here are some great alternatives to keep your reading going while AO3 takes a mini break:

Fanfiction.net

One of the oldest and largest fanfiction archives online, still active with a huge range of fandoms. While its interface feels dated, its scale makes it a reliable fallback.

Dreamwidth

A blogging and journaling platform often used by fandom communities to host fic and discussion. Many writers cross-post AO3 works here.

Asianfanfics

Focused heavily on K-pop and Asian media fandoms, but includes a wide range of stories. It has a lively community and original works too.

Squidgeworld

AO3-inspired and part of the same fandom-friendly culture. Squidgeworld is smaller, but offers a welcoming archive for fanfiction writers and readers.

Tumblr

Right here, yes! Still one of the most active fandom spaces. Writers often share fics, snippets, and links through tags and reblogs — great for discovering hidden gems.

This platform leans more toward original writing, but fanfiction is welcome too. A good option if you’re in the mood for something outside your usual fandoms.

Mediaminer.org

An older fanfiction site with a strong anime and manga focus. It’s a classic alternative for long-time fandom readers.

Wattpad

Popular for both original fiction and fanfiction, especially with younger and mature audiences. Wattpad also features community interaction through comments and voting.

A huge bunch of you filled out the “Help Shape Bokbi" Form and I honestly can’t stop thinking about it. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart to everyone who participated! Reading your answers just re-validated exactly why Bokbi is being made in the first place.

What made me extra happy was seeing people say they’d actually swap out their current systems for Bokbi. Not “this looks cool, maybe someday,” but “this could replace what I’m doing now.” That’s the kind of validation I really needed — so thank you.

Special shoutout as well to the folks who suggested a browser extension or quick “Save to Bokbi” button. I’d been toying with the idea (I used to make tiny extensions just for myself back in the day), but I wasn’t sure if anyone else would want that. Bokbi doesn’t automatically sync or fetch story info. That might sound unusual, but it’s intentional 🌿 — no broken APIs, no missing data, and most importantly, full control for the reader. You decide how your stories are labelled, tagged, and tracked.

💚 Bokbi > Spreadsheets 🌿

Before Bokbi, its creator was tracking their reading with a spreadsheet.

They logged fanfics from AO3, Tumblr posts, Wattpad, even the occasional web novel — all in one giant sheet. And technically, it worked.

But spreadsheets come with limits:

They’re designed for data, not stories. Everything ends up in cluttered rows and cells.

There’s no visual sense of a library — no covers, no quick “Currently Reading” or “Completed” at a glance.

Updating always feels like admin work, not part of the reading experience.

The problem isn’t that spreadsheets can’t hold information — it’s that they don’t feel good to use for this. They weren’t built around how readers actually read across multiple platforms.

Bokbi grew out of this frustration — a real solution for readers who deserve better than spreadsheets 💚

De-googling help

If anyone has any good gmail/google alternatives, please let me know. I don't want to give ID or selfie verifications, not knowing what it'd be used for in the long run. And, as a whole, I just want to get away from Google and everything that's starting to happen more widespread.

I know that there's Yahoo, and Proton Mail but I'm a 90s baby who only got technology after the Google overhaul of ecosystems, so any advanced help with pros and cons would be much appreciated.

When it comes to browsers, I know of Brave, and Zen (where the only problem with Zen is that telepartying series and stuff is basically impossible—yes, it's necessary because I'm in a LDR and I like watching things with my partner.)

I'm not too concerned with Google Docs because I moved over to @ellipsus-writes a few months ago. And with @bokbi-official in development I don't need an alternative for sheets right now. And, if it makes a difference, I'm on MacOS.

For those unfamiliar, the form is a short survey designed to better understand how people read online — where they find stories, how they keep track of them (or don’t), and what tools they wish existed. The goal is to make sure Bokbi grows in a way that reflects real reader experiences, not just assumptions.

We’re incredibly grateful for the early feedback already coming in. It’s fascinating to hear how people navigate their reading habits across different platforms, and it will directly shape how Bokbi develops.
