Goddamn this time of year is just heaven on earth. I really have to pinch myself, often, take a step back from being in the moment of all this and just marvel at the wonder, magic, beauty, joy, love that breathes in every cell of this city and the people in it. Holy fuck are we fortunate. Happy Jazz Fest lovies. #fromneworleanswithlove #createyerownmythology #jazzfest #houseconcert #bywater #neworleans regram
Mr. Okra in Your Pocket has been selling like pecan hotcakes ever since we got 'em in stock this past week. There's a long & storied history of street criers* chanting their wares from mule-drawn carriages or sauntering the streets with their hand baskets touting their watermelons, oysters, veggies, coffee, praline and taffy candy, breads, and pies.
Mr. Okra continues that tradition today in his bright red truck as it rambles around the 'hood.
"My daddy was the first Mr. Okra man,” says Mr. Okra, now 66. “He started selling fruit from a wheelbarrow, then from a horse and buggy, then from a truck. I always rode around with him when I could and when I got big I went off on my own.” - Nov 2009, New Orleans Magazine
Mr. Okra in Your Pocket echoes the refrain locals hear as he sings his wares:
"I have oranges and bananas. I have eating pears and apples."
"It ain't no use in cooking, if you don't use fresh veg-e-tables."
"I have blueberries. I have peaches; I have plums. I have the mango."
"It ain't no joy like a ninth ward boy."
"I have mirliton. I have bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers..."
"I love my truck and I love what I do."
* Chapter 2 of Gumbo Ya-Ya: Folktales of New Orleans by Robert Tallent is all about street criers.
Listen to Mr. Okra chat with indie radio producer Diane Bock here.
Don't miss the best local music festival in the heart of New Orleans. Chazfest is ten hours of nonstop music, food and good times on two stages!
Seriously, y'all. The shop is going to be closed tomorrow so we can be at the neighborhood fest. I've worked another job every year and am so excited to finally get over there.
FRIDAY NIGHT! Come on by and have some wine and see all of the goodness from In Exchange, Lark and Lotus Jewelry and smell good awesomeness from Senica! We're having a neighborhood shindig and it's oh so much fun. May 3, 2013 5-9 p.m.

The New Orleans-based musician Luke Winslow-King releases a new LP this today and plays live around New York this weekend.
Congrats Luke! (We've got the Bloodshot Records reissue of LWK's album and his partner Esther Rose's fashions in the shop.)
The artisans we carry aren't the only makers out there yonder. Many of our customers are makers, tinkerers, creators, artists too. We'll be sharing what they make and their websites here soon.
