Same Crows
Up the back stairs with a lunchbox and a bag of stuff I don’t need. Visible from the top landing window a lattice of branches bears a dozen fat crows, comedians who joke about fourteen sixty-fifths of my life.

Millionaire Lake
Rounding the curve at the edge of mud-stumped Tapps
nearly every day, an unkind chuckle escapes me.
Unworthy thoughts: too bad folks,
your million-dollar view of the dry future;
and from the past, ghosts of trees
murdered for electricity.

Textgating
Here’s what there ought to be: a public site where we can anonymously post information about absolutely horrid and dangerous driving when we see it. It should be moderated to prevent anything hateful or destructive. Our motivation should be actual concern for our fellow human beings, no matter how foolish they are. Photographs or videos would be prevented, there’s no point in creating another driver distraction, and this is not meant to shame anyone.
My inspiration comes from a breathtaking sight on SR410 near Sumner this afternoon at about 1:05PM. A young woman driving a green Mazda was not only texting (I could clearly see her holding the phone over her steering wheel, glancing up and down as she thumbed the screen), but she was sitting perhaps half a car length behind a yellow VW beetle (the modern kind, not one of the old ones).
If you recognize yourself, please change your habits. You were speeding, tailgating, and texting all at once. You probably have a family, maybe children? Think about death, pain, a lengthy hospital stay, trouble with the law, a horrible driving record, or whatever it takes to make you change. But change.
Maybe you think nobody cares about you? I do.

Never fear, we’re all anonymous here— besides, I’d be just as embarrassed caught in praise as you, praised. Norwegian ice man, rope arms and knotted legs; gravity has been trying its damnedest to kill you, pull you into the Earth. You tighten straps on a frame pack weighted with books, or rocks, to make your walk of five or six miles count for…

The Finger
The crooked knuckle of El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, removes, by virtue of Costa Rica, with the tip of Panama, a cigarette from a pack, selects a pastry from a baker’s case or a ring from a jeweler’s: Depending from Guatemala and Belize, it could be that finger my wife asks for when she ties ribbon on a Christmas package: please hold this bow.

“The suburbs” doesn’t even mean the suburbs any more. You can’t have grass. Two cars in the garage is an insult to the Earth. Oh, Earth, what have we done? We hardly knew ye. Men with hats— snappy-looking, narrow-brimmed real hats worn without irony—…
