popular fandom hc that i mildly disagree with that im not sure how people will react with my take:

i feel like it’s a somewhat popular belief that people really dislike the byers and joyce specifically because of their socioeconomic status, which i don’t think is 100% true?

obviously wealth has a huge part of popularity and social status, especially in a small town like hawkins. do people probably view joyce a little bit differently after wills “death” ? yes. do i think they’re like super high up in the town hierarchy? no. do i think they’re completely hated and shunned? also no. especially seeing how joyce interacts with customers at melvalds in the town, people seem to like her and have no issues with her, they just maybe thought she was a little anxious and overbearing when it came to will

#like idk sometimes it feels less like people think they’re hated by hawkins #and more like people WANT them to be hated by hawkins #a lot of people subconsciously associate financial insecurity with hatred #asking for help is supposed to be humiliating therfor they should be shamed by society #they forget that being marginalized doesn’t automatically mean you’re hated you just aren’t treated fairly by institutions and systems #not saying it never leads to hatred or that it doesn’t often lead to it eventually ‼️‼️‼️#but i don’t think it’s an automatic the byers are poor so therfor everyone in hawkins stays away from them #and will and jonathan are a bit of a different story #jonathan had that apparent reputation of being a quote pretentious creep which like i want to know what warranted that line since we never #get follow up #and will was bullied for being gay before he was out or probably even came to terms with it #but middle and high school peers are a whole different ball park like esp in small town indiana in the 80’s one small thing #can be your reputation for years #also i feel like it’s important to note that it’s small town indiana in the 80’s #wealth is going to be very different than it is in more developed areas #high end of the spectrum would be yk the turnbrows #doctors dentists lawyers etc.#wheelers would be the upper middle class end of the spectrum in hawkins #but the rest while probably not as poor as the byers since she’s a single mom would be probably not be like super rich #i mean to say this earlier but it’s all the way up there and i’m not deleting a bunch of tags:#while i think jonathan and wills status AT SCHOOL is lower due to rumors #to adults they’re probably just joyce’s boys. quiet and polite #people really liked joyce as a teen in tfs #idk #it all feels very weird to me #not saying everyone who thinks that is wrong #but i don’t think it’s an automatic coorealation #scared to tag this i feel like people are gonna come hunt me down #strangerthings #byers
