Data liberates our health - Day1 Notes from Healthbeat
HealthBeat 2014 Raw Notes
Introduction - What are the questions in Digital Health?
What is the Expedia of Medicine?
What is the relationship between patient and doctor?
Why is healthcare so far behind? HIPPA - designed to facilitate communication, but hasn't kept up with new technology
When can software make recommendations that is traditionally made by doctors? FDA blocks software from making recommendations. Wearables are loved by people so politician has stayed away from blocking it. Telemedicine isn't normally consumed so facing issues. How can telemedicine be as exciting as wearables?
Traditional medtech vs. today
Brian Russell (Zephyr Anywhere)
Selling your technology to a larger health organization. Answer the trifecta question How do I lower cost of healthcare? How do I enhance patients welfare? How does this improve performance of a health method Companies acquire business not technology/product You need customers for healthcare companies to acquire you Need to improve the healthcare companies product mix Data not for data sake. Data needs to help you take action Traditionally the physician is the person who makes your health decisions and records your data. Today the patient and other people can get data and make decisions How can small companies teach big companies? Usability of product. Learn the language of the technology What do big med tech companies know that small companies don't Getting product approved through regulations Knows how to ask the right questions to move it through the healthcare system around the world What's the next big medtech have company? Equivalent wearable to today's medical diagnostic devices
Bridging consumer wearables with medical research
Matthew Smuck MD Stanford University
Matthew Smuck focused on mobile health technology at Center for Medical Mobile Technology. How do you bridge consumer wearable tech to medical research ? Traditionally measures were subjective. Smartphones with sensors can provide a real objective look at people's life. Activity monitoring research. Today focused on accelemorometry. Next to include heart rate monitor and GPS. All sensors can provide new tools. What are interesting projects? Stanford medical research has a project on using wearables and how to improve healthcare. Issues: sensor data today doesn't provide data that works in medical healthcare system. Disconnect between sensor data and what doctors need to make judgments. Today very little link between sensor data and people's behavior data.
What's required for doctors to adopt this? Medically valid information from the data. This requires a lot of medical research The information must be packaged so that physicians can consume it. For example, MRI scan. Doctors today already understand MRI scan data. What are other uses that's interested in this data? Obesity Chronic care and chronic diseases e.g. Diabetes Sleep Cardiac disease Cancer research Today mostly used as motivational tool. This can be taken further Does Stanford plan to provide recommendations on what's going on with different wearables? What are effective and what are not? Companies don't know enough about the users health industry. It's a difficult problem. More of engineering and data science problems. There needs to be some standardization of output from these sensors.
Sexual Health and Designing in Health
Ramin Bastani (Healthvana)
Health shouldn't feel like health. How do you add humor? How do you make it more delightful for users? How can we change the look and feel of your health record to be more engaging and actionable? Check out the Healthvana app. Looks more like Instagram. 66% of patients check their results right away How do you deal with HIPPA? Healthvana is a HIPPA business associate. Spent a lot of time learning about HIPPA and HIV. We are a platform. Provide data for apps like Tinder. Users can share their sexual health information easily Healthvana focuses on the design because believe people will be more engaged this way. Goal is to make healthcare not like healthcare How do you keep users data up to date? As an example, a person is HIV negative 6 months ago but that's not necessarily true for last month. Bastani: Hard problem to solve. We can be transparent and timestamp
