"English isn't my-"
Hush now my friend, and let me read the absolute beauty of a fic that you have bestowed this world and humiliated the first English speakers with
Most people watching fd bloodlines: omg that was so gruesome and scary.
Me watching fd bloodlines: *points to Erik* I'm gonna read and write fan fiction about that one.
Is he a scary man covered in blood? Or is he my baby girl? Spot the difference
smut is great but do you know what’s better? heart wrenching, soul twisting angst that makes you want to cry (take my money)
BEGGING y’all writers to write more anthony padilla fics 🙏🏻🙏🏻 (ok but like anthony x ian’s sister reader) what omg who said that 👀
but like fr
I think there's something that needs to be said about encouraging readers to leave feedback.
For me it's not about "tell me my writing is amazing and stroke my ego"
It's more about "please engage with me so that I can experience your joy secondhand and foster a connection with you"
I understand that not everyone wants this in their reading experience, some people are shy and a million other reasons why maybe someone wouldn't want to engage and that's perfectly fine!
But what I'm trying to steer away from is being a passive content creator with passive consumers. What I want to steer toward is fostering a community that is essential to fandom. I want to see your reactions because it makes me feel like I'm a part of something.
On encouraging reblogs —
I understand that not everyone is comfortable reblogging, especially explicit content. This is ok!
But just consider that the only reason you were able to enjoy a fic or fanart is because someone else shared it, and by not sharing it yourself you are potentially robbing someone else of the opportunity to enjoy it as much as you did.
As OPs our reach only goes so far and this website relies on reblogs in order for anything to truly get seen by a wider audience.
So that's really it! That's why I encourage these two things at the end of every story I post. Not because I'm trying to be demanding and "make people feel bad" if they don't do it.
I know most other social media sites encourage mindless content consumption and that's just the way of the world nowadays, but I am from a time when community was at the heart of fandom and I just don't want to lose that.
But what I'm trying to steer away from is being a passive content creator with passive consumers. What I want to steer toward is fostering a community that is essential to fandom. I want to see your reactions because it makes me feel like I'm a part of something.

"Why can't the freaks on AO3 just go and make a site for all the gross stuff and leave AO3 alone."
Because AO3 is that site. Because AO3 was that site long before you decided AO3 was better than the sites you bullied us off of before, and I can promise you if someone somehow comes up with a fanfic site you like better specifically for the 'gross stuff' you'll try to bully us off that too so you can benefit from it.
AO3's specific core purpose is to preserve fanfiction, yes, but it was also instigated as a host site for the fanfiction that kept getting yeeted off other platforms like Wattpad. Its designed to preserve all fanfiction, not just the fanfiction you, personally, think is 'allowed' to be written.
AO3 is the site for all the gross stuff the freaks make. We've been there just as long as you. We've been funding it just as long as you have. AO3 has specifically said you have a place here. The timeline was literally:
Wattpad/FF.net/LiveJournal purge fanfics > AO3 is born > The people who's fics got purged moved over to AO3 > AO3 gains popularity as the best functioning site > The people who pushed for the fics to be purged off Wattpad move to AO3 > The same people try to push for AO3 to purge fics.
AO3's source coding is open-access. You go make a polished, strict, rigid site where nothing 'icky' is allowed. You go make a site where you can control what is hosted. We already have our space.
AO3 was specifically made for the stuff likely to be purged from other sites.
It was built around "we need to own the servers" so we wouldn't have to deal with anyone else's judgment calls about what was acceptable in fanfic: Not corporate sponsors, not evangelical religious groups, not "save the children" activists... and not other fans who think that The Gross Stuff should be banned from public view, only shared via private email after you've sent in a request heavily laden with special keywords.
Some of the founders remembered when slash fanfic was kept under the table at the dealer's room, distributed with brown paper wrappers only to people who knew to ask for it specifically.
And they said: Fuck that. Our art is not a crime and we're not going to be ashamed of it. If you are ashamed to have your art next to it - there's a whole wide internet that's ready to host your G-rated genfic.
AO3 was built for the stuff that was unwelcome elsewhere.
The Princess Bride (1987) dir. Rob Reiner
@itspileofgoodthings:
#murder me#the princess bride#I used to think they were only good because of their chemistry and faces#(bc they actually say so little)#but the script deserves so much credit too#because even though they barely speak they say ENOUGH#and then Cary and Robin fill the spaces in between with such TRUTH#I’m obsessed with the balance in writing romance between saying too much and not enough#both pitfalls and commonly made mistakes#the princess bride strikes that balance perfectly#this exchange alone says so so so much#through their words and their expressions#the moment starts out so Playfully Hard#she’s still in her bossing him around/tossing her head at him mode#but then he stands up and looks at her Like That#and she’s suddenly caught off guard by his humanity on a deeper level#so she softens and adds the please#almost as an apology- or at least an expression of gratitude#like she knows she’s just been kind of unfair (even if just in a fun way)#and then he Looks At Her Like That Again#and says what he always says#As you wish#and he’s so deliberate with it#and it’s like- it’s like#[screams into the void]#it’s like he’s saying ‘I don’t care what you ask me to do or how you ask me to do it’#‘I will always love you and I will always do what you ask me to do’#he’s almost (almost) laughing at her a little#but more than that he’s being pointed#to let her know he loves her and look at her face in the last gif. it takes!
Me after this post:
I am WILD about how they chose to frame the romance in this movie because, like.
The book doesn’t let them be this sincere. Buttercup is stupid. Wesley doesn’t even seem to like her a lot of the time. There’s this spiteful little bit at the end about how Buttercup will lose her looks in ten years and they’ll immediately fall apart. It’s satire.
But to make the movie, to make it work in this medium, they–and this included Goldman, he was reportedly very involved in the process–went no, no. No one is going to enjoy that. Film is a different animal. The metanarrative is experienced on different terms.
So the movie version of Princess Bride, while still well supplied with genre jokes, wound up with better developed characters and relationships, in a lot of ways–the exact opposite of what you usually get in a movie adaptation–and a fucking classic, and I am never over it.
When I was a (unmedicated, undiagnosed ADHD) kid, like, under 12, my room was a mess all the time. Not shocking.
I struggled keeping it clean.
I struggled getting it clean.
I would sincerely put in quite a bit of effort and be really proud of the progress I made. Then one of my parents would come check and see how I was doing.
"Well, you've still got a long way to go."
That sentence. I was like, 11 when my parents were saying that to me. It was crushing. All my pride and satisfaction with my work was completely gone. All my effort was worthless to them. All they saw what everything I didn't do.
At the age of ELEVEN, I knew that wasn't right. That wasn't fair. I swore to myself I would never invalidate someone's work like that.
Now, at 30, I catch myself thinking 'I cleaned up, but my apartment is still so messy.' and I flashback to standing in my bedroom as a child, hearing those fucking words from my parents.
'No. I wouldn't invalidate someone else's work. I'm not going to invalidate my own. I did good. I made progress.' and I'll list the things that I DID get done to myself.
You deserve credit for all the progress you make.
You deserve credit for all the work you do.
It doesn't matter how much work you have left.
What you accomplish, no matter how small, counts. Even when what you accomplished was taking a day to rest and recharge and give yourself a break.
Never let anyone invalidate your work. Not even you.
Someone’s prob caught this long before me, but:
In Lord of the rings (fellowship) we see the ring leaving Gollum and bouncing and rolling down the rocks:
The ring wanted to leave Gollum and therefore did.
It’s then picked up by Bilbo unwillingly; has an ‘unexpected journey’; and stays with him.
But when Bilbo is leaving, he decides to leave the ring with Frodo. The ring however, wants to stay and keep wielding its power and influence over him.
And when, at Gandalf’s insistence, Bilbo drops the ring, it still doesn’t want to leave him:
Which is why it falls flat, no bouncing or rolling away. It thuds to the floor like a child might stomp its foot when not getting its way.
I dunno how i’ve never caught this b4, and I may just be stupid and ppl have spoken bout this b4 but i’m a nerd and can’t help but mention it unprompted.
Yeah, I'm fine
