Fourth Wing
Author: Rebecca Yarros
Book: 1/3
Genre: fantasy, romance
Summary: Violet Sorrengail is forced into the Rider’s Quadrant at Basgiath War College, leaving behind her dream of becoming a scribe. Within the Rider’s Quadrant, cadets must overcome training and testing to accomplish one goal: bond a dragon, or die trying.
Review: This is the most addicting book I’ve ever read, as well as the most entertaining. Reading this book absolutely destroyed my productivity and sleep schedule and all I could think about was reading more. The beginning of Fourth Wing brought on some nostalgia as it reminded me a bit of The Hunger Games and the Dauntless faction from Divergent; it has that cut-throat, fast-paced, exciting feel that kept me on the edge of my seat. To say I loved this book is an understatement; I loved the characters and their unique abilities and personalities, as well as the dragons and the magic that exists in this universe. One area I feel that the book lacked was the descriptions in Yarros’s writing. I found that some settings and action scenes lacked enough detail to fully grasp what was going on, but otherwise I was hooked at every page turn and gripping every detail. I loved the way Yarros emphasized the determination and drive in her characters- Basgiath War College is not for the faint of heart and seeing what the characters overcame was inspiring. I began the second book immediately after Fourth Wing’s plot twist ending and I’m so eager to see where the story goes from here. I would recommend this book to anyone starting their reading journey, anyone who loves fast-paced books, action, fantasy, romance, and dragons.

Not in Love
Author: Ali Hazelwood
Book: 1/1 (audio book)
Genre: romance
Summary: A forbidden affair blossoms between Rue and Eli while their companies wage a legal war. The affair is secret, with no attachments, and has a deadline: the day one of the companies triumphs the lawsuit. However, can a deadline put a stop to evolving love?
Review: This is the first audio book I’ve ever listened to; while it was entertaining, I regret choosing something with so much sex in it and I should have done research before making my selection. The book was cute and fun, building tension with the legal case and surprising me with a plot twist. However, I did not enjoy the relationship development between the two main characters. They meet on a hook-up app and have a lot of sex, then they get to know each other later and develop more of a relationship. I really liked the character’s relationship by the end of the book, but it was unfortunate that a love-bound attraction couldn’t have blossomed sooner. This book was definitely the type of romance that gets people’s attention with the sex scenes, rather than the concept of love. I understand that every reader has different preferences with romance books, but this book did not suit my preference. I did enjoy the legal case and the opposing companies aspect; I loved that the case uncovered secrets and horrifying truths. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a sexy romance.

Nona the Ninth
Author: Tamsyn Muir
Book: 3/4
Genre: sci-fi, fantasy
Summary: Nona wakes up in someone else’s body on an unknown planet, surround by a city that is falling apart. The Blood of Eden forces take control and wait for call from the Emperor Undying, while Nona fears she may have to give her body back and leave her normal life with her family.
Review: Nona the Ninth was like a breath of fresh air after reading Harrow the Ninth. This book was funny, unique, mysterious, and well-structured. I loved how the plot evolved, knowing that one loose end of the story was going to unravel as the book went on. My only critique was the lack of pacing in this book; like Gideon the Ninth, there were waves of slow, boring parts of the story with intriguing, exciting parts of the book to follow. I understand that not every plot is a perpetual climb, but the pacing in Muir’s writing seems to be lacking. Otherwise, this book kept me invested, despite the slow sections. Nona the Ninth is so unique in comparison to Gideon and Harrow, that I couldn’t help but let my curiosity guide me through each page turn. I always had questions while reading, like “who is Nona? Where did she come from?” “Why are there chapters about the Emperor’s past?” Speaking of which, I liked the addition of John’s past and how he told his story. The hidden names left some mild confusion at first, but the set-up and slow reveal struck at my urge to know more, keeping me intrigued. I loved the dichotomy of Nona’s personality and this necromantic/apocalyptic universe. Nona is so funny, sweet, quirky and innocent, which makes her seem like a bright light in a world riddled with darkness and death. I am so excited for Alecto the Ninth to be released and to see all Hell break loose. I would recommend this series to anyone interested in the science-fiction or fantasy genre, funny characters and dialogue, or a wild mystery.

The Familiar
Author: Leigh Bardugo
Book: 1/1
Genre: fantasy, historical fiction
Summary: The Spanish Golden Age is at its prime as cities shine with wealth and the political scene captures everyone’s gaze. The story follows Luzia, a servant whose talent for small miracles catches the eye of her employers.
Review: I loved how this book wove in themes of fantasy with historical fiction, the story was rich with history, family ties, morals, and love. Luzia’s character development was an aspect that kept my attention throughout the book, and I was entertained by each of Bardugo’s unique characters. The only unfortunate part about the book was that it took the first 65 to 100 pages to finally get moving. The slow beginning discouraged me at first, but the story’s evolution was truly mesmerizing as I made my way through the rest of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction, fantasy and magic, and a forbidden romance.

The Betrayed

Book: 2/2
Genre: romantasy
Summary: The Isolten King has his throne in an iron grip, going as far as to cause chaos and tragedy to keep it. However, the Eastoffe Family may have the power to overthrow the tyrannical king. Hollis’s passion for her new homeland drives her stand along side the Eastoffes, despite the heartache that haunts her.
Review: Cass’s build up from the first book to the second book was fantastic. The plot was written gorgeously and I loved how each character was developed throughout the story. This book was exciting, and of course Cass gifts us readers with ANOTHER plot twist. I will forever be in awe of the enchanting way she writes her books and makes the story come to life. I would recommend this duology to anyone interested in the romantasy genre, a rival kingdom concept, or looking for a unique tale of romance.

The Betrothed
Author: Kiera Cass
Book: 1/2
Genre: romantasy
Summary: Growing up in the royal court, Hollis Brite’s dream has been to marry the King. When King Jameson declares his love for Hollis, she begins to question if being crowned queen is truly the happily ever after she yearns for. Hollis’s heart begins to lead her toward another adventure when she meets a mysterious foreigner, transforming her love story into something she never imagined.
Review: I enjoyed this book, though it was definitely used as a build-up to The Betrayed, the second book in the duology. Cass did a wonderful job with the world building, character development, and overall story structure, but I found this book to be a bit slow and I was more excited for the second book. The tension between the rival kingdoms made me eager to read more, and the plot twist near the end set the scene perfectly for the next book.

Beach Read
Author: Emily Henry
Book: 1/1
Genre: romance, fiction
Summary: Authors Augustus Everett and January Andrews are complete opposites. When January writes a best-selling romance, she ends it with a Happily Ever After. When Augustus writes literary fiction, he kills off his entire cast. Stuck together over the summer, the two authors make a deal to combat their writer’s block: Augustus will write something happy, and January will explore the gloom of literary fiction. As part of the deal, January will take him on trips worthy of a rom-com montage, and Augustus will take her to interview surviving members of a death cult. Both will finish a book by the end of the summer, and no one will fall in love. Obviously.
Review: I adored this book. As I have been stuck in a loop of fantasy and science fiction books, it was refreshing to switch genres! The motifs in this book include love, grief, growth, healing, and friendship. Henry’s characters and plot points are entirely relatable and applicable to real life. I loved going through the main characters’ journeys of healing and growth as they overcome their struggles through loss and grief, and rediscover the meaning of love. This book was beautiful and heartfelt, and made me feel all the emotions these characters felt. Henry’s writing made everything feel so real and even made me evaluate my own experiences with loss and healing, and recognizing that true happiness is found in what we have now, rather than perpetually grasping for something bigger and out of reach. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in romance, books with funny banter, and a story that will melt your heart.
