Korbel, 2009, Organic Brut Champagne
This champagne was on sale and I was curious about how the organic grapes would effect the taste. Unfortunately this bottle doesn't actually label what kind of grapes went into make the wine, but since it's a California I'm guessing it's mostly the state main-stay which would be the grape varietal chardonnay, which the palate and nose support that assumption.
The nose of this is very crisp and bright mainly consisting of lime, pear, green apple with a slight bit of honey and vanilla.
The palate is very consistant with the nose, although the sugary aspect of a brut comes through very clearly. It's fairly balanced but with a good kick of tannin to balace out the sweetness from both the RS and the fruit.
Overall not a bad cheap champagne, it was under $20 at my local booze bodega while their non-organic version was a few dollars cheaper
If you find that your nose gets stuffed up when you drink wine, you would probably enjoy this more. The stuffiness is caused by a reaction to sulfates in wine, which occur naturally but are sometimes added as well. To be labelled organic the wine maker is not allowed to add sulfates, so it would just be those that occur naturally, which might give your sinuses a bit of a break.
