Nocturna Book Review⁣ ⁣ Thank you to @hodderscape who sent me an early copy of Nocturna in exchange for an honest review!⁣ ⁣ Finn is a thief who can change her face. Alfie is a prince that was never meant to be king until the assassination of his brother changed his destiny forever. Desperately trying to bring his brother back, Alfie and Finn’s stories become entwined resulting in the release of a dark magic. Dangerous and hungry, this magic needs to be stopped before it takes over the world.⁣ ⁣ Nocturna is an own voices, Latinx fantasy - something that I’ve never managed to find in the book store before. This was one of the main reasons that made me want to read this book as well as a synopsis that sounded amazing. Not only does Nocturna sound amazing (check out the real synopsis, it’s way better than mine) but it actually matched my expectations. I am in love with this world, the characters and need more right now (please!!).⁣ ⁣ Finn and Alfie are the main view point characters with some chapters told from Alfie’s friend Luka and some from the villain. Out of these characters Luka did feel the least developed but the dynamic between him, Alfie and Finn when they were all together was so enjoyable and I really hope we get to see more of it in the next book. Finn and Alfie were really interesting characters and I found myself invested in their stories pretty quickly. ⁣ ⁣ San Cristobal really inspired my imagination, it’s been a while since I’ve seen a world so vividly in my head when I’m reading and I adored every detail that was given. On the Come Up Review “That’s what we call our goal, the come up. It’s when we finally make it with this rap stuff. I’m talking get-out-of-the-Garden-and-have-enough-money-to-never-worry-again make it.”⁣ ⁣ On The Come Up is the second novel by Angie Thomas and follows 16 year old Bri who wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. After her first song goes viral for the wrong reasons Bri finds herself at the centre of controversy, portrayed as a menace, a “hood rat” by the media - a role she feels she has to play into to save her family.⁣ ⁣ Bri was a really interesting main character, she was devoted to her family and super talented (like she can have my money, I’m buying all her songs) however some of the decisions she makes I found to be questionable but they were understandable given her situation. She definitely jumps to conclusions a lot, something she’s called out on multiple times in the book.⁣ I think that Sonny was my favourite of the side characters, he had a kind of “Simon Vs.” storyline going on which I really enjoyed although I did manage to guess who the ”Blue” of the situation was really quickly though (like 150 pages before they were revealed). There were a few LGBT+ characters here who Angie treats really respectfully, acknowledging that their story isn’t her story to tell.⁣ ⁣ Angie deals with a lot of topics here including gang culture, drugs and living in poverty. I’ve been lucky enough in my life to not worry about how much food is in the fridge at home, when the next bills are due. On The Come Up creates empathy and a deeper respect for people who live what these characters go through every day of their lives. At it’s core though, this book is about family, friendship, going after your dreams and being true to who you are. Hey!⁣ I hope you’re all having a great day 😆⁣ ⁣ The other day I got hold of a proof copy of Nocturna by Maya Motayne and I am in love with the design of this proof, the blue/purple/red smoke on the dark background looks amazing and I’m sure the final cover will look just as good when it’s revealed. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve not seen much buzz for this book on bookstagram so I thought I’d try and hype it up a little 😅 The press release describes it as perfect for fans of Tomi Adeyemi, Leigh Bardugo and V. E. Schwab, that got me excited from the get go - I’ve heard so many good things about all of their books. Hey ☺️ I hope you’re all having a great day! “I’m a turnaway girl and so I know: music belongs to the Masters.” Delphernia lives in the Cloister where Mother Nine tries to get her to make shimmer, turn music into gold, like the other Turnaway girls. One day Delphernia is given the opportunity to leave the Cloister for the outside world but it’s not everything she was expecting. I really enjoyed this book, it’s a dark and feminist fairy tale that grips you from the beginning. The writing was beautiful, lyrical and poetic much like Tahereh Mafi’s writing style in the Shatter Me series. For a debut this is stunning, however I feel settings could’ve used a bit more description. Many scenes seemed to be taking place in empty spaces - I would’ve liked more detail to help build the world just a little bit more. The characters were all interesting, each of them with their own secrets which are slowly revealed throughout the book. My favourite in particular was Linna Lundd.
