The Kid is the unnamed protagonist of this story that takes place in the American-Mexican border during the mid XIX century. Opposite of him, we find the Judge; an educated men, feared for his skills as a killer and a complete lack of remorse, always shrug by quasi-supernatural features. 

A violent classic, regarded as McCarthy masterpiece, it depicts the roughness of the landscape on the border during these convulsive times of lawless men. Based on some real characters and events, Meridian deeps dig into questions of patriotism, loyalty, morality and the human nature.

Dog Soldiers - Robert Stone

A 70′s cult classic, included in Time’s Best English-language Novels, Stone’s adventure takes us from fragile South Vietnam, where a heroin deal takes place involving journalist Converse. The action then moves to southern California where Converse’s wife and friend are now chased by corrupt (?) cops who are trying to get their hands on the drugs.

I would only take somebody like Millet to describe a full blown orgy like it was dissecting a painting by Matisse. Founder and editor of Art Press magazine, Catherine Millet shocked the parisian art scene with the biographical tales of her numerous sex adventurous (which ironically included a great amount of members of the parisian art scene...)

Always of a very explicit nature, the book is not set to compile random stories one after the other, but rather tries to tie together different themes that go from feminism, intimacy, relationships and most importantly one woman's honest portrait of what sex means for her.

The Painted Bird - Jerzy Kosinski

One of the most brutal stories set  during WWII, Bird is a fictional tale, in the format of a biography, of a young boy who was either jewish or gipsy as he makes his way through small towns in occupied eastern Europe. During this period the kid must learn to survive the worst of the human condition. 

The title comes from one of the episodes in the book, where the young boy meets a fellow who, for entertainment purposes, captures certains birds and then paints them in different colours. He then releases this bird to join his flock but when the rest of the birds identify it as an intruder, they attack it until it drops dead from the sky.

Generation X - Douglas Coupland

Canadian Author, Douglas Coupland, became the unwilling spoke person for the post baby boom generation that came to adulthood in the late 80's. He's novel is said to have coined the term of Generation X, but also other terms like McJob and others. 

The story is set in southern California, where 3 friends and neighbors share their stories and their world views, as well as debate about their current place in life, family relationship and goals in life.

Geek Love - Katherine Dunn

The cult classic that defied the "dysfunctional families" scenarios.  It tells the story of Al and Lilly, a loving married couple, owners of a traveling carnival that decide to experiment with drugs, chemicals and radioactive materials during pregnancy to breed their own family of "freak" shows. The story is told through the diary of a now aged Oly, an albino dwarf that recalls the rise and fall of her family's business.

The novel stands as a brilliant metaphor on what we regard as traditional family values, fraternal love and the oh-so-evasive concept of beauty.

The Master and Margarita - Mikhail Bulgakov

The devil has appeared in 1930's Moscow and he's also accompanied by an entourage which includes a cigar smoking cat that walks upright and is pretty fond of pistols. 

The Master stands out as one of the best novels of the 20th century and a brilliant satire of the totalitarian soviet state.

A cult classic from the 70´s, Zen is a philosophical novel (and a semi biographical one) where the author and protagonist tries to fit classic and modern philosophical ideas into everyday life, in the ways of a 2 weeks road trip next to his son across the U.S. The common thread for the intellectual debate boils down to the definition of Quality, a concept that drew the character into a mental institution to receive shock therapy.

The Handmaid´s Tale - Margaret Atwood

I was always finding excuses not to read the Handmaid´s Tale, not because i had anything against it but just the idea of best sellers sometimes turns me off. But in this case i think i should have gave this novel more credit a long time ago...

Atwood´s novel is set in a dystopian future where a Christian theological dictatorship has been stablished and were pregnancy is almost impossible to achieve due to pollution and toxic chemicals. Society has been divided into casts and anything that isn´t male, caucasian and christian would basically become an inferior species (no science fiction there i guess...)

The book, published in the 80´s, is a clear echo of the 60´s - 70´s generation that fought for racial and gender equality, only to be pushed back by the decade´s conservative political period.

My Secret Life - Anonymous

Sometimes authored by anonymous other times by Walter, no one knows for sure the true identity of this massive 4.000+ pages of victorian erotic deviants. 

Our author, or protagonist, goes about his many adventures through the streets of London and the many characters that cross his way. Especially, prostitutes and madame´s from all types and forms.

The relevancy of the text doesn´t lie on the proficiency of its prose, but rather on the extended amount of details that it goes to describe an era better known for its conservatism.
