I am having Thoughts about Ienzo in KH3. I love seeing people play with the idea that after he's recompleted, Ienzo has a hard time adjusting to having a heart and emotions again. It makes so much sense since he became a Nobody so young.

But I also keep thinking about how in KH3 he seems all happy and cute and sweet in all his cutscenes. And don't get me wrong, I love that for him, but it also feels kind of…out of place to me based on what we've seen from him in the previous games.

So what if he's not happy in those scenes? What if it's all an act? He has no idea what to do with himself now that he's feeling so many emotions. He sure as hell won't admit that to anyone though - that's too embarrassing. So instead, he just looks at people who do know how to exist with emotions and tries to mirror them.

And who better to mirror than Sora? Sora is the epitome of Heart™️in this series, with a heart so strong that he took down most of the Organization with it. And factor in that most of the time we see Ienzo in KH3 is when he's on the phone with Sora. So maybe he just observes Sora's happy-go-lucky attitude and tries to copy it, because clearly that's how people with strong hearts and good control over their emotions are supposed to act. But it's all surface level. On the inside, Ienzo has absolutely no clue what he's doing or how to process this new swarm of emotions.

Just faking it until he makes it. (Or until he can't anymore and he falls apart.)

I truly think it's more interesting if Zexion has terribly dry taste in media because it ironically flips around and makes him weirder. He curls protectively over his magic book and refuses to say what he's reading and everyone goes "oh, he's definitely reading fanfiction and/or porn in secret" but he's actually reading essays by an ancient greek philosopher. He's typing on his laptop and quickly closes the window when someone walks by but all he's written in his diary is a note about how nice the Pride Lands are at night. He keeps every single part of him secret, no matter how innocuous, because his mind can come up with ways it could be held against him.

I like the idea that Even nudged (more like shoved) little Ienzo away from the humanities and into the sciences, so Zexion ended up with a sense of guilt over indulging in it, and then growing up in the Organization gave him a sense of guilt over having a good time ever. Having a hobby makes you like Demyx, so make sure you have enough reasons to justify it in a well-written essay. Reading for research; reading to learn about something that is not useful for work, but still may be applied; reading to learn about something just to know it, not because it'll be useful; reading fiction; reading fantasy, the ultimate escapism; could he even bring himself to try going further?

And then recompleted Ienzo tries to explore new things after a lifetime of refusing to let himself but ends up having a mental breakdown after learning he enjoys techno music. He reads an angsty poem and cries and cries and turns his own messy recompleted feelings into a poem and gets embarrassed and rips it up and puts on a Haydn sonata to soothe his nerves

Thinking about Ienzo and Riku having a conversation and that turns into Ienzo telling Riku he’s lonely without even realizing he said that. Saying without realizing he doesn’t truly know who he is without work being involved.

Riku points it out then Ienzo becomes embarrassed in the moment then sorrowful the next.

Ien was an orphaned child who was adopted by the sage king of the town he lives in, didn’t appear at all to engage or even know any other children, became probably the youngest scientist in all the worlds, then had his life taken from him by a madman who deceived him and his father figures (after banishing the previously mentioned sage king and convincing little Ienzo and his father figures Ansem went mad), becomes a Nobody for a whole decade of his life only to be murdered by the creation of one of your father figures, is recompleted and instantly gets back to work.

Like-

Of course Ienzo is lonely. Of course he doesn’t have friends. Hell, that boy doesn’t even know who he IS properly.

It’s so easy to see Ienzo slowly dipping into identity crisis when he’s not working. When his mind isn’t busy or distracted. So easily would he start thinking about and sinking into everything he’s done and what’s been done to him. How much Darkness has consumed him for most of his life. He’s trying to atone for those actions but that doesn’t really help him understand who HE is as a person.

Imagine Riku offering friendship to Ienzo. Helping him with his personal Darkness as who else but Riku would be best in helping Ien understand that part of himself?

Give Ienzo friendship. Have him do more and be more than just a young scientist trapped in a lab. Have him explore his interests, his personality, see the worlds with his own eyes and not from books or screens.

Have Riku help Ienzo realize who he is and find peace with himself.
