Decked out in her Gryffindor scarf with red and gold ribbons in her hair and paint on her cheeks Dom’s coltish legs trembled with every step up into the stands, her fingernails biting pink marks into the flesh of her palm as the crowd trickled into their seats. Everyone had been asking if she was sure she’d be alright and she had assured them with the usual sunny smile that she’d be absolutely fine and they had trusted her because Dom hardly made a habit of lying. As the players took to their brooms she blinked rapidly, her eyes burning and as she tried to take a breath she let out a choked off little gasp. The pitch spinning in front of her eyes. She shot out of her seat and dashed to throw herself as quickly as she could back down the steps. Her chest so tight she could hardly suck in a breath and eyes filled with tears. Her thoughts consumed with one thought. Getting away.
The players were getting a quick fly around warm-up on the pitch, technically, Scor was meant to be sat on the bench in the stands. Technically, he was meant to be starting the introduction in just a few minutes time but as he spotted Dominique fleeing he vaulted the bench with his long limbs, only stumbling slightly and followed her down the almost endless flights of stairs. “Dom? Est-cequetuvasbien?” He could spot the signs of a panic attack, the hyperventilation, the fear. “Tu es en sécurité, la colombe.” Scor stepped closer to her, gently taking her hand and pressing. “Feel that? Press your heels into the floor a little. I want you to follow my breathing.”

electric. if albus could choose one word to describe the air filling what little bit of space was left between their bodies, it’d be electric. and if albus hadn’t known any better, he’d think it was summer with how sweltering the atmosphere around them had become. fuck his embarrassing weasley genes because every patch of his skin felt flushed, thus albus felt v u l n e r a b l e. it wasn’t foreign, not necessarily unwelcome, but it was different and albus was too caught up in his sudden realization that while the staircase was dark and unflattering, the subtle light poking through the pane of glass filling the window only made scorpius’ eyes seem that much brighter. for a moment, the colour grey was luminous, leaving albus winded and unable to decide if being vulnerable was a bad thing or not. though he supposed that’d be an existential crisis better saved for later because through a momentary lapse of focus, albus almost missed the way scorpius’ gaze mimicked the very same look you’d give to someone who was off their rocker. of course. he immediately found the idea that he could still shock scorpius—even after all these years—amusing.
“i’ll always be your sod, but i needed to pitch in an endearing one-liner to wrap up my spiel and,” another hiccup. “-simultaneously reel you in, darling.” albus sniffed, a lazy yet satisfied grin washing away any nerves that might have been previously prominent in his features. as scor began massaging his scarred joints, he wiggled his fingers in a failed attempt at feeling the chill that naturally frosted his best mate’s skin against the tips of his fingers. it was a bit sad, really. albus perpetually missed the former contrast of hot and cold whenever their hands would meet. “we fit,” he paused. he had no fucking idea where he was going with his affections. for him, it was just a statement of the obvious; something they both already silently knew, understood and agreed upon. “i - i think - - - i don’t particularly know why i said that so suddenly. i’m feeling a bit dappy, scor.” in truth, that was his own delicate way of saying ‘i like the way we feel together’ because he couldn’t yet find the voice to admit he’s never fit with anyone else in quite the same way. he decided that he’d blame it on the buzz later. with that thought came another. would anything change? unless they added snogging to the list of couple-y things they already do naturally, probably not. albus let the breathlessness swing out of him in disbelieving laughter, cracking a lopsided grin. “are you trying to seduce me, malfoy? is that what’s happening here?” he clicked his tongue in amusement before closing his hand around scorpius’ and giving it a squeeze. “oui - i’ve already got the owl written for mum in my head just in case the rumours make it home. of course i’ll break it to her at some point, but she’ll be tickled pink that her capricious shit of a son finally picked you up and found the joy in young love. so don’t make me ask you out again - please, BABY.”
even in the half light scor could see that albus’ face was unusually red, maybe it was the drink, maybe it was being accosted on the dancefloor by whoever it had been. he paused his ministrations for a moment to press his cold, cold hands against al’s cheeks and let out an indulgent sigh as he felt their heat against his fingers, smiling shamelessly. albus’ eyes seemed to be fixed onto him, a drunken pause for a few beats that almost made him writhe with the intensity of that gaze. it felt not quite tense, like counting the seconds between a strike of lightning and a clap of thunder. ozone filled, humid static.
“so you admit that this is a spiel, i feel like this is going to end terribly. i was just telling ro the other day about how our plans are always wholesome.” scor reprised his role as the naysayer with ease and only slight sincerity. he snorted at the pet-names that were seemingly going to become a regular thing, though there’d always be a joke hidden within them now. “hold still you utter oaf- unless that?” scor stopped and looked up, full of hope, “did you feel me?” the ache to help al return the feeling to his hands was one that came and went each time he watched al have to concentrate twice as hard on the fine motor-skills of using a quill or cutting ingredients for potions. when he couldn’t feel things with his fingers at all. “on the step? the staircase? our hands? on a broom? life?” he asked, bemusedly. what a nebulous little sentence. “only a little bit.” scor hummed and swayed a little, knocking their shoulders and knees together with the slight movement. “the question is it working? potter you little tart.” the bass of the music was still as loud and swarms of people were everywhere but it somehow felt private. if anyone else had invaded his little bubble on the staircase he wouldn’t have been so at ease. “you really have been thinking about this for a while. what now then, what’s the play? gotta twirl you into the middle of the room and stake my claim by snogging you to within an inch of your life? trespassers beware? territory, mine. yeah i’ll be your dumb fake boyfriend though i doubt anyone will be pleased that i’m in the equation.”

ledavanas:
“scorpius!!!!! my favorite natural blond!!!” leda cried, fingertips grazing his hair, “someday you’re going to let me style it, and on that day you might even unseat zach and alex as the most fashionable boy in hogwarts!” she looked down at the flask, scandalized despite the two bottles she’d just been holding, “have you been drinking?”
“finally, someone acknowledges its majesty.” he crows, flicking the ice-blonde hair in question just before her fingers stroke across it. “holding you to that, avana!” he had no aspirations to the title, however he knew how good he could look in charcoal grey cashmere, with leda’s styling of his hair he could very well be a contender. “only a little, i’m truly shocked you could tell.” he drawled.

“it’s murky at best.” nadia chided with an amused smirk, “and that name does not instill confidence in me as far as the quality of the drink goes.” rolling her eyes almost affectionately, she looked at his drink with no small amount of skepticism, “just how many of those have you had, scor?”
“ah yes, i forgot you zabinis and your night vision. however everything sort of looks the same to me in this lighting.” scor swirled the contents and they sloshed before he drank, the burning sweetness of black, spiced rum. the only kind he could stomach. “yes well, dominique has elaborated extensively on why wine is superior and only very specific ones as well. not that i continued to listen after the first ten minutes.” he cocked his head to one side, sending her a cheeky faux-innocent grin. “enough. thanks for worrying though, it’s nice to know you care.”

Dawn was fast approaching, the dull morning sky tinted light orange, almost that of the color of a peach. Lily, who was finally beginning to sober, was sitting with her feet dipped into the crisp water of the lake, watching the sun’s ascent. At the sound of light footsteps, she turned to see Scorpius and gestured him to sit. “I had to ditch the party eventually. It was too many infuriating people in one confined location. Sore winner syndrome really is a fucking epidemic in this school – how was your night?”
The crisp air was just what Scorpius needed, biting and fresh against his dry throat. The hangover was already sinking its fingers into the divots of his skull, wresting the comfortable numbing buzz of alcohol out in favour of a piercing headache. He strolled without direction across the dew-topped grass toward the lake, spotting familiar, tumbling red hair that was practically aglow with the dawning sun lighting it from behind. Scor climbed atop the rock next to her, their shoulders just touching as he pulled his knees up in front of him and rested his elbows on them. “A bit of a blur, actually, nice enough.” He blinked slowly, fatigue creeping in. “McGonagall’s back though, nothing can keep her down, that’s proper Highland grit right there.”
allbvs:
@bookspined albus all but tripped—being the proud owner of two left feet—as he clumsily stumbled through darkness, trying his absolute fucking best to make it towards the staircase because he needed a moment to just sit and breathe. being stuffed in a room that severely lacked airflow as bodies pressed against him trying to dance or hands grabbed at him in a failed attempt to pull him every which way became too much, even for his buzzed state. he’d almost regretted not donning his glasses for the occasion when the staircase came into full view, causing a sigh of relief to pass his lips as he noticed an all too familiar frame sat in a hunched position on the steps. thankfully, albus didn’t need glasses to recognize his best mate anywhere and—with even clumsier footing—managed to stagger forward on his chicken legs until he was able to plop down right beside him. “listen, i know i may seem a bit drunk, but i’m not and,” he hiccuped. “-okay, maybe i’m a bit buzzed, but that’s beside the point, babe,” he paused, resting his elbow over his knee and his cheek against the palm of his hand. “the point is, i’ve been sitting on this idea for over a month now and — i think it’s high time you and i started dating.” he’d been grinning from ear to ear as he spoke, but the moment he finished the sentence was also the moment he realized his suggestion sounded a bit fucking ridiculous when said aloud. his cheeks flushed as the embarrassment settled in, but he waved it off ( quite literally ) and cleared his throat in hopes of salvaging the ‘moment’. “hear me out before you break my heart — i know it sounds silly, but it’d keep the masses away and considering there’s already heaps of rumours circling about the castle, would it really hurt if we joined forces to ensure we stick to our preferred goals of keeping emotionally unavailable to others? i mean - i was called hot tonight, forced to dance, winked at — it was horrible. and to be quite fucking frank, i don’t particularly want anyone else but you trying to hold my hand anymore. so, how ‘bout it? i know i’m a sod, but i could be your sod for the mere cost of a single word, three letters.”
there was a strange little helix staircase close to the wall that led up to merlin only knew what, it was there that scorpius perched for a breather. he’d been drinking since the match, testing a game he’d thought to start at the beginning of this year and every time someone had taken a bludger he’d taken a generous swig of the flask in his sleeve. the general maiming and battering had had all the professors staring up at the poor sod in question each time, so he’d managed to get away with it. he’d been pleasantly tipsy at dinner, warm and smiling dopily. after he’d pulled off the nondescript shirt he’d worn, as commentator, he wasn’t supposed to outwardly show support for either side and he’d climbed into the too-large slytherin quidditch jumper and pulled on his least-battered boots. attempted to coax the brilliant white of his hair into something smooth and party-appropriate. that was hours ago and he’d hit a point where he’d approached sobriety, drank through it and right back into drunkenness. he sipped at the dark rum he’d refilled after dinner, sweet and burning just as he was approached by a stumbling al, who sat beside him. his thigh a warm line against scor’s own.
“hullo.” scor greeted bemusedly as albus leveled him with big, drunk eyes. “of course not.” he interjected sarcastically in the small break between his best mate’s sentence with the unbearably endearing hiccup. playing along with the listening he exaggeratedly tilted his head to one side and waved his hand in a do go on parody. at the revelation, scor’s eyes gaped grey and wide and albus looked ridiculously pleased with himself, a beaming grin stretching to show almost all of his teeth. and for a fraction of a second he was absolutely blindsided by it. “you-? i... pull the other one.” their heads were bent close together to hear each other over the music and it dawned on him rather quickly that al was almost definitely having a laugh. then he started the rambling little monologue that was supposed to be some kind of damage control. it wasn’t an uncommon thing when albus found himself cornered, often because people just flocked to him that scor would slide a shoulder between them and tangle their fingers together and quietly pull him away with a murmur of ‘c’mon babe’ which usually put things to bed. he raised his fingers to the soft skin of his temple and p r e s s e d. obviously the rumour mill wasn’t working as efficiently as they’d hoped. “as if you’re not already my sod.” scor scoffed before taking the offered hand closest to him and pulling it open to rest palm up on his own knee, then started to gently knead at the fine bones and joints he knew better than his own in a familiar, methodical pattern. he thought for a moment, about how much would really change for them. nothing, really, if he thought about it on the grand scheme of things and the confessions that people fancied him continuously would most likely end, they always stressed al into this tense hunched mess. even when he tried to laugh it off. scor glanced at the ceiling and sighed as though he was feeling particularly put-upon, then pasted the most seductive smirk he could muster with a drawl to match trying to stifle a snicker, “want me to be your fake boyfriend, BABY?”

albie. he would have gagged had the god awful nickname come from anyone else’s mouth. albie. most weren’t even allowed to call him al without receiving one of those ‘if looks could kill’ glares in return. and scorpius was well aware of that, but considering the delivery was whiny and awful and practically all of the things albus seemed to adore coming from his best mate, scorpius —clever little wanker— had also known that he’d get away with it because he knew albus better than anyone else did, which resulted in his expectations being unfairly bang on. albus watched as the smaller boy was pathetically outweighed by the plush doll, giving his best effort not to collapse into the wall himself. malfoy’s and their flair for the dramatics. he opted not to voice it, but albus would have happily gone to azkaban on the charge of manslaughter; happily if he were able to keep this ridiculous image committed to memory for the duration of his time, of course. “oh, you reckon? what about: scorpius hyperion ‘tragically weedy’ malfoy, saved by albus potter from what looked to be a children’s toy, he will be honoured with an award by DRACO MALFOY himself for his valiant selflessness!” he sniped in return, shit-eating grin still plastered in place. if his fingers had jabbed a bit too roughly at scor’s ribs, albus hadn’t noticed until his friend was virtually flinging himself towards the other side of the corridor in fear of being tickled. considering albus regarded his hands as essentially inefficient, it was easy for him to overlook the force and pressure being applied with them. easy, but not often done. nonetheless, albus found that pushing the particular aspects of life that made him unhappy out of his mind was appreciably effortless with scorpius; his hands being no exception to that. “adorable, scorpi—really. alright, alright, you’ve won!” he stepped back into close proximity, not bothering to wait for a response as he tightened the grip on his wand. “what exactly have you won? well, i’m delighted you asked, good sir,” another dramatic pause temporarily filled the space between them before he annoyingly pressed his cheek to the side of scor’s face and whispered, “diminuendo.” with a quick flick of his wand, the demiguise plush shrank to a considerably more normal size in the other’s arms, and albus was finally able to meet scorpius’ eyes as he pulled back.
it had all been al’s fault, naturally. there had been certain words exchanged, weight thrown about, bets and/or wagers set. however the embarrassment of the hellishly large demiguise was outshone by the fact that he’d gone to one of the stalls set up around the fair and fucking won the thing against all odds. so he’d been right, his assurances that he’d win the top prize had come to fruition through some kind of fluke and he’d be riding that smug wave for the rest of the week. as soon as he wasn’t almost suffocating. death might put a dampener on things.
“oi excuse me, you missed about six of my other middle names. from now on address me only with my full titles, thank you very much.” he sniffed imperiously, there’d have been a face and full exaggerated actions to go with it if he wasn’t already very much occupied. “wonder child of the chosen one himself, albus potter DEIGNS to rescue the awful death eater spawn.” he snickers, thinking back to his earlier watch of rom and jule with ro. “very star-crossed lovers, don’t you think? but soft, what light through yonder window breaks? it is the east, and albus is the sun, oh no wait a minute that’s just the torches reflecting off his big dumb NERD glasses.” scor’s tone morphed from lofty and romantic to his usual deadpan in an instant, lopsided smile directed right at albus. at the sudden close-proximity of his best mate and his warm cheek next to his own scorpius let out a sound which... could have been described as a squeak by people who would be very, very dead the second after the word was spoken aloud. then he had nothing to hide behind anymore as the thing was relatively normal sized for... a strange, oddly forlorn looking, demiguise plush. his shock faded and his mouth curled. “you just said i win.”

nzabinii:
nadia was no stranger to the parties that happened after quidditch matches, and in her mind, it was better that she know about them—-and approve—rather than worry about what might happen to one unchecked by her, jac, and the prefects. besides, in the grand scheme of things, it was harmless (if there was one thing people in this school could come together to celebrate, it was quidditch and underage drinking). that her house’s team had won—-and knocked dorian shacklebolt down a peg—-was simply the icing on the cake.
“i think i’ll stick with my wine, rather than whatever concoction you’ve got there—-it looks like you scooped some lake water into a glass, quite frankly.”
high pink spots had appeared on scorpius’ cheeks since his fifth drink, face radiating all the warmth from his body and leaving his extremities even more icy than usual. he’d never been much of a dancer so much of his night so far had been squeezing through the hordes of students to slip between conversations. the room had somehow accommodated them, as always, perfectly. without producing a space so small that people were turned away but not so spacious that parts of the room gaped awkwardly empty.
“bit of a reach nads. suppose it’s not too far off, the name of the rum is kraken.” scor took a swig. “however i imagine the tastes differ somewhat.”
ledavanas:
“look what i found!! you can always count on slytherin house to spring for the good stuff.”
“hear hear!” scorpius agreed heartily raising his flask, grip more wobbly than he’d ever admit.
There must be those among whom we can sit down and weep and still be counted as warriors.

roseswsly:
“i do share a genetic marker or two with ginny potter, legendary seeker for the famed holyhead harpies–” ro said, pitching their voice to sound like a commentator. “but please, go on, tell me how great i am. and i will take that bet–” they flicked their head and shimmied their shoulders in what they thought was a passable imitation of a bon vivant but came across looking like an erratic cat. they wiggled their arms in something of a flailing motion. “i don’t think–” rose placed one hand behind their head, extended the other, and began ‘the sprinkler’, much to the amusement of passerby. “you or anyone else can handle these dad moves!”
they stopped abruptly, narrowing their eyes. – “i will not take you up on any gambling, illicit activities, or schemes, however.”
“you bloody wotters and your superiority complexes, merlin. we get it, you saved the wizarding world and are brilliant at quidditch.” scor affected a jealous, put-out scoff. he watched them move and felt a twitch at the corner of his mouth as he struggled not to laugh. “if a grindylow could drown... that’s what i imagine it would look like.” as they went into their finishing move he couldn’t help but burst into giggles, burying the laughter in his hands as they shifted their arms. “woah, save it for the sisters gig tough wix!”
“lackaday, forsooth you wound me!” he mimed taking a dagger rather agressively to the solar plexus, staring at the non-existent blood coating his hands, those passing them had promptly stopped laughing at ro’s dancing and were skirting carefully around scor. “i have never, ever partaken in anything that may in any way ascribe itself to the word scheme. you have had the pleasure to be invited into light-hearted, frolicsome shenanigans. scholarly, curiosity-driven ventures or enterprises at most.”
