NYC! Independent Bookstore Day is on Saturday, May 2nd! Stop by La Casa Azul Bookstore, see the new art exhibit, meet award winning illustrator John Parra (12:00pm) AND watch a screening of “Millie and the Lords” (6:00pm). #bookstoredaynyc http://bookstoredaynyc.com/
Happy Independent Bookstore Day! Celebrate with some discounted photobooks! Enjoy 25% off books in-store and online today!
Saturday, May 2nd, is the first ever national Independent Bookstore Day, and we’re proud to be teaming up with housingworksbookstore to bring you Operation Indie.
What is that, exactly? We’ll be on hand near the register to offer supporters of the bookstore a chance to take semi-anonymous photos, like the one above, to be posted to our blog and social media.
We’ll be there from 1pm-5pm, so come take 30% off books at the Housing Works monthly sale and get ready for your close-up!
Book buyers who participate in our photo booth will also have the option to receive one free raffle ticket per purchased book toward a giveaway of NYC-centric bookish swag!
And remember: there’s no limit to the number of books you can buy! Come ready to buy a stack of books, like our agent pictured here, to launch your spring reading season.
More information here!
To celebrate the first national Independent Bookstore Day, we created Operation Indie to let supporters of housingworksbookstore be photographed by our agents with their purchases, as anonymously (or not) as they preferred.
Thanks for a fun and successful first Independent Bookstore Day! To see all posts from today, please visit the tag #OperationIndie.

This Saturday, May 2nd, is Independent Bookstore Day across the country. In New York alone, there are dozens of events taking place at bookstores around Manhattan and Brooklyn. My favorite bookshop in Greenpoint, WORD, is hosting a presentation by Ann Morgan on her book The World Between Two Covers. In her book, Morgan details her quest to read one book, fiction or memoir, from every country of the world over the course of a year.
A couple of years ago, I came up with the idea to launch a book club in which each month, we’d pick a book from a different country, going in alphabetical order until we’d visited them all. For inexcusable reasons, the club lost steam after the second book on the list, the poignant Broken April by Ismael Kadare of Albania. But I am confident listening to Morgan’s talk will inspire some thoughts on how to revisit and execute my idea.
I encourage you to go visit your local independent bookstore this weekend and show support of the creative hubs that bring communities of readers and authors together.
