Making Editorial Paper Art

I try to take as many pictures as I can when I’m making an Illustration. Here are some photos for a piece of editorial art I made for Research Magazine.

Everything starts with a million sketches. I did three full pages of thumbnails, sprinkled with word associations to work out concepts. Some of these are my ideas, some are Chris’s (the art director). 

I sent the Art Director a pdf document with 6 different concepts, and an explanation of my building process. It’s hard to make changes to my work after I’ve started gluing it down, so I try to make sure the idea for the art is solid and understood before I get to that point. 

The concept we decided on was one of Chris’s original ideas. Here is the original sketch he chose from the PDF document I sent. 

Bang! Pow! Zoom! I start cutting out the pieces and placing them in the layout. This will help me tweak the composition, and make any changes before I start gluing. This is one of the photos I sent to Chris for feedback. 

This is the illustration, pasted and ready to photograph. 

The photograph is lit, after many hours of rearranging the lights. 

I color my images digitally in photoshop. This allows me to make color changes quickly, if they need to happen. This is the final that I sent to the art director in .psd format, with the color on separate layers.

I’d like to thank Christopher Nicholls for giving me the chance to do this piece. It’s my first for a financial magazine, and the project went smoothly.
