“why did you go to visit him?”

boone leaned against the bar and grinned, “i’m just sayin - i think you’d be having more fun if you were as drunk as i am.”

“i promise i won’t leave ever again.” he slurred.

“Where did you think he wound up after keeping me in the basement all those years?”

“shit - lace i didn’t know he did that to you.”

“Well, you know, getting visitors rights to see someone in jail can take quite a while.” She shrugged. “And how is your head now?”

“your dad is in jail? shit i didn’t know that lace.” he bit his lip slightly, “it’s better.”

“Visiting my father, I think the better question is, where have you been, hm?” She raised her brow.

“that’s a long time to be visiting your father. me? i’ve been at home too, clearing my head after the whole me kissing you when i was with georgia thing.”

“Presents don’t make it better. They know you leave them.” Olivia said as she leaned her head back.

he frowned, “i’m trying my best, liv. i’ll make it work, i promise.”

“Oh my god, it’s Boone.” Lacey chuckled, hugging him back as best she could given his tight bear hug. “Kid, huh? Now that I missed.”

he held her close for another minute before pulling away, “where have you been?”

“You’re a good dad when you’re here and shit one when you leave..” Olivia mumbled. “But you’re never here.”

“i’m here now.” he said quietly, closing his eyes.

“God, it’s good to be back.” Lacey smiled as she walked onto the campus.

“lace!” boone said excitedly and wrapped her in a bear hug, “what the fuck, kid i’ve missed you!”

“i know... probably too good.” he rested his cheek on her shoulder and closed his eyes, “i’m going to stop running. i have to be a good dad.”

he was quiet for a moment, just looking at her with a slightly sad expression, “because running is easier than facing tough or scary situations.”
